Botch Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 A quick test flight was required at first, but the manual is now on the iPad for the morning and evening tram/train commute. Think I need to screen capture and print each picture (with the reference numbers) at the start of each panel section. When reading that section, it is easier to make a mental image of what a switch / knob does if I can look at a printout of it. Brain is on overload with the HOTAS profile still waiting to be done once I understand the basics of controls/nav/weapons. Also waiting for the MFD's and pedals to show up in the post. :) TrackIR should come from a colleague in the US soon. What fun..... If you select the heading (Start Up Procedures for instance) they are linked to the section that has images showing the consoles. It's a good thing that this is Early Access and we've all volunteered to help test and enhance this work in progress... despite the frustrations inherent in the task with even the simplest of software... otherwise people might not understand that this incredibly complex unfinished module is unfinished. /light-hearted sarcasm
novonic Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 Reading and leaning the manual before first flight is a little over the top! Reality check, its a $60 sim, it doesn't matter if you ding the paintwork... 1
tflash Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 I must confess I read part of it ... the whole China hat thing intriged me (who's wearing a hat inside the cockpit, gee????) , so I thought I'ld get a little sneak peek. It won't happen again, promised! :D [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
StrongHarm Posted October 13, 2010 Author Posted October 13, 2010 Reading and leaning the manual before first flight is a little over the top! Reality check, its a $60 sim, it doesn't matter if you ding the paintwork... I agree that there's no risk in going up before you know what you're doing. I do believe that RTFM and going through in the order intended by the developers prevents a lot of confusion, and allows you to realize the full ability of the aircraft... thus, maximizing your $60 purchase. Once again though, if someone jumps in the cockpit and hits their own tower with the cannon, tries to click learn and gets frustrated, starts reluctantly reading the manual and only gets through page 3, then goes back to COD.. I'm really OK with that. As long as they pay the devs for their brilliant work.. it doesn't matter if they realize how brilliant it is. heheh. I equate it to surfing.. if you try to take on a wave before you understand it.. or fight the wave, you drown.. if you understand and respect the wave and surrender to it, it will give you a sweet ride. Surrender to the Hog... It's a good thing that this is Early Access and we've all volunteered to help test and enhance this work in progress... despite the frustrations inherent in the task with even the simplest of software... otherwise people might not understand that this incredibly complex unfinished module is unfinished. /light-hearted sarcasm

Gonzo01 Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 How can you not want to read the manual? The manual itself is worth the cost of the Flight Sim... I just emailed the A-10C Manual to myself on my iPad and now I have it with me wherever I go. No need to print. I will still buy the full manual from ED when it's available just so I have a copy to write in. Gonzo
Pizzicato Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 On the subject of the manual, can someone point me to a link, please? I know that someone uploaded a copy with Wags' permission, but I can't find it. A little lunchtime reading in work would certainly help me to get through it a little faster. i7-7700K @ 4.9Ghz | 16Gb DDR4 @ 3200Mhz | MSI Z270 Gaming M7 | MSI GeForce GTX 1080ti Gaming X | Win 10 Home | Thrustmaster Warthog | MFG Crosswind pedals | Oculus Rift S

TheMoose Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 Now I can tangibly say that I can. HOT from the presses. :D No more alt-tabbing for me ;). This manual is total awesomeness. I never seen so much in-depth information provided for 1 singular game. It was so thick that I had to make it in 2 sections and all in full color. Thanks again ED and all that worked on this manual. Steel Jaw Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 Crap that's nice. Not to be a stick in the mud, but the manual as it stands has hundreds of errors, I was waiting for the final draft b4 printing. Moa Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 ^^^^ Good luck with getting into any form of air force with that kind of attitude ... or commercial heavy aircraft pilotage, at least AFAIK. ;) Yes, YOU LEARN EVERYTHING about your first flight BEFORE your first flight :) You are EXPECTED to know everything. Then you are actually more likey to do 'everything' :D Not for undergraduate flight training (well, not in the New Zealand Air Force at least). You simply cannot absorb what is needed and practice needs to be interspersed with theory (anyone can learn either, but people who can master both at the same time are rare). Military flight training is also to a rate and required precision that is not matched in civilian flight training - so flights are interspersed with lessons. For "operational conversion" you are expected to be up to speed a lot sooner. By then you have a few hundred flight hours and a year of service. This means you're learning the specifics of the aircraft; since flying, navigating, communicating, and military acronyms are already known.

Using GoodReader and adding bookmarks to all the sections. Very quick now to navigate to the section I want and small enough to sit on the desk amid the joystick/mouse/keyboard mess. StrongHarm Posted October 14, 2010 Author Posted October 14, 2010 (edited) Now .. that's what I'm talking about! I did RTFM all the way through. I just completed my first flight and it was wildly successful. I created a night mission so I could concentrate on the cockpit while doing practical subsystem familiarization. I created a flightplan with waypoints and bullseye, from the cockpit instead of the mission editor. I took off and was pleased with how the "C" cradled me in information and responded to my HOTAS (see X52pro profile here) Here's the crazy part that made me look around to see if there was a dev looking over my shoulder laughing. After thoroughly reading the manual, creating a night mission, and embarking on my 120 mile check flight.... half way through I had a CADC failure!!! I didn't panic. I knew what to do. My alt/speed were locked and flashing. I selected PNU on the altimeter to open the pitot and get a manual reading. I went to my CDU and tried a hot reset from the systems page; no joy. Tried to cycle the power; no joy.. bit test fail. I checked my 'divert' and found the closest field. I radioed and asked for nav and told them I was inbound. I performed a perfect cold VFR landing. As I went through the shutdown checklist I reflect on how glad I am that I waited for my first flight. My first flight will undoubtedly be remembered as one of my best. Steel Jaw Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 Sweet check ride dude. Question for ED: are random failures modelled? "You see, IronHand is my thing" My specs: W10 Pro, I5/11600K o/c to 4800 @1.32v, 64 GB 3200 XML RAM, Red Dragon 7800XT/16GB.

GGTharos Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 Yes, they are, though they should not be just happening at random - ie. you have to turn random failures on, in theory. SH, got a track of that with the model time of your falure? (Congrats BTW, chekcride pass, no need for you to read any more boldface ;) ) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
