Hey guys,

I just took off from my A-10 and as I took off, at about 200 ft off the ground, my HUD decides to go dead and now it's hard to target anything without it.

No caution lights are lit on any of the panels.

Resetting the IFCC does not help.

Any tips on how to fix the HUD in mid-air or am I screwed until I land and get a new plane? XD

Check your IFCC switch, would be right above your left knee if you were in the pit. Ultimately your AC is not combat ready and you should RTB.

Yup did that, IFCC was running and HUD just died in mid-air shortly after take-off. Turned off the IFCC and restarted it and that didn't help. This seems to happen randomly, one time I had HUD fail just as I was fencing in during campaign mission. I lost patience so I just ejected to get new aircraft via crash recovery, lol.

probably 1 of 2 things:

1) you've been damaged

2) you've run out of video memory (I've had this happen and it stops drawing the HUD and MFD's)...also stops drawing my flaps some times...

But yeah, beyond that, there is no trick to it other than making sure you are generating power, have the batteries on, and the IFCC switch on

There can be the third thing - the HUD was randomly broken. This feature is not introduced yet, but many of avionics could be broken randomly.

Thanks for your input. Next time this happens, I'll save a replay track and see if it occurs again in the track. I'll update here again then.

Is this random breakage completely random or is there things that influence it some way?

An idea I always liked is that if you skip some in-ground tests then there is a small random chance of a fault in that or related system, but if you do the proper ground check then it will not fail.

It's completely random for now.

How can ground check prevent any failure? :)

You do the check to find out whatever you're testing is not broken, and if fails the check you'd ask the ground crew to replace it before taking off. But since simulating all that is probably not practical, just having the check procedure "repair" it would have a similar effect. Mostly it would encourage you to actually do all the proper ground checks as you'd have a real reason to do it, or you could choose not to do it and risk a small chance for failure.

I find that just having completely random failures that you cannot influence in any way and that do not happen because of some reason (as they always do in real life, be it a manufacturing defect or some service fault) can be annoying. (Maybe just because I know it was just some pseudo-random number generator that made the fault happen :)) An option to turn such off would be nice at least.

I had HUD out and all dials not working after getting hit multiple times by 8 APC's (was practicing my aim and not that good obviously).

I managed to RTB and land in one piece listening for the stall warnings and the sounds of the engines and feeling the throttle.

Fly her long enough and you don't need the HUD or dials.

Maybe you had a bird strike or something.

I've never had a HUD just go off. There is also a switch just above IFCC I think which is to put the HUD in standby mode, maybe you hit that?

I too have had inexplicable HUD failures mid-flight. No warning light, just no HUD. I have obviously checked the IFCC, and in desperate hope, tried doing in-flight realignments or using the HARS.

I was trying the Smerch Hunt mission for the first time, and had the HUD switch off after I engaged the first Smerch. All I was doing was fiddling with the TAD; I think I was switching SOI to the HUD when it happened. Also I noticed that I couldn't make the HUD the SOI after this happened, i.e. it remained on the TADS. So it seems like the sim was aware the HUD was non-functional, and not some rendering glitch.

Unfortunately it's fairly long since it's a ramp start and I was trying some things I was unfamiliar with along the way. Incident occurs at about 17:45. I've watched it through once at normal speed and it occurred in the playback. When I went to double-check the time using time compression to skip to the good bit, the game crashed. I tried again using a little less time compression, and it became desynced and my plane crashed... and then the game crashed.

I believe the switch above the ifcc just changes the hud from day to night mode. Maybe it is a video card related issue?

You sure you put the power switches on lol? I think i've taken off without turning batteries and AC power etc on (turned them all off after engine start), my stuff died mid flight and I was in a panic. Redoing the start-up tutorial fixed the problem for me (and taking notes).

at least it was still properly attached and didn't suddenly fly off its mounts and hit you in the face like it did with that F-18 pilot. First the thing breaks off its mounts on the cat launch hits him in the head. Then it landed on his balls. Poor bloke.

Yesterday I tried to fly the unguided bombs training mission for like the 5th time. Before I even got to the range I had a CDC fail show up on my left MFD and the HUD altitude/airspeed started flashing and had to abort. I hadnt even reached WP3 yet and this never happened before. Couldnt figure out why it happened or how to reset it. I wasnt doing anything fancy. Straight and level flight.

Video or never happened XD

Interesting... I just had "HUD failure" after pre-flght and start-up, just before take-off. There was no indication (light) of system failure. I don't think it was a graphic card thing tho' ... I tried to use the make the (invisible) HUD my SOI and change steerpoint but the the was unsuccessful ( i used TAD to confirm). It seems like that would have worked if the trouble was a graphics blooper...(shrug)

Now (curious)I wish I had shut down and restarted to see If I could have reset the system... hmmph?

Just eject from your aircraft or crash it and get a new one. You'll note that HUD works on new aircraft..
