SgtPappy Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 The few simming friends I have aren't ready for LOMAC yet. Now I know the Third Wire series isn't a true simulator - a 'light' sim at best - but I was wondering if Wings Over Europe would be a good compromise for me so that my friends and I can pick up and play. Plus, I've only got a laptop with no keypad, so I don't even know if I've got enough buttons for any jet sim. But what are the flight models like? What are the differences between LOMAC and Wings over Europe? Is it just simplified or is it horribly incorrect in every way? How do the planes compare in the mods? (i.e. will an Su-27 turn tighter than an Eagle; will an Eagle climb faster than an Su-27... etc) For those of you who play IL-2 (the classic PC sim versions like 1946), have you tried IL-2 Wings of Prey? That is an arcade-sim version of the classic IL-2 games but quite simplified in things like torque, different aircraft accelerations are not very noticeable, planes all stall the same (albeit they stall at different speeds and AoA). Could WoE be like the Wings of Prey of the LOMAC world? Thanks!
swift Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 Yes, Thirdwire series are Fun. It's a very light simulator, with arcadish approach focused on action. The only downside is that AFAIK the new SF2 engine doesn't allow multiplayer. But SF1 with all the mods and addons should be pretty much on par with SF2. But cmon Lomac is not that hard! I'd stick to Lomac and DCS, but that's me :cheer3nc:
Airbuster Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 Well I've tried Wings Over Israel for couple of hours and IMHO - yes, it will do the job. It's fun to play and little less complex than LOMAC, but way ahead from arcade games like HAWX. The graphics are not that bad - The terrain is awful from low altitudes, but if you fly high it's OK. The clouds are little terrible too. The 3d models of the planes however are really good, even some are better than the old stock models of LOMAC. Give it a try, you won't regret.

asparagin Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 They probably read and understood the context of the OP. Yeah you're right, I saw sim and got blind, but truth is, LOMAC is a good gateway drug, I wouldn't go below what realism goes. Spoiler AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, MSI MEG X570 UNIFY (AM4, AMD X570, ATX), Noctua NH-DH14, EVGA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti XC3 ULTRA, Seasonic Focus PX (850W), Kingston HyperX 240GB, Samsung 970 EVO Plus (1000GB, M.2 2280), 32GB G.Skill Trident Z Neo DDR4-3600 DIMM CL16, Cooler Master 932 HAF, Samsung Odyssey G5; 34", Win 10 X64 Pro, Track IR, TM Warthog, TM MFDs, Saitek Pro Flight Rudders
GGTharos Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 LOMAC will get you almost as far in A2A and iron bomb employment as Falcon will. The rest is the rest ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
asparagin Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 You're talking about FC here. GGTharos Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 Yes. I really shouldn't be using them as interchangeably as I do. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
SgtPappy Posted November 3, 2010 Author Posted November 3, 2010 Thanks gents. I'm still planning to buy LOMAC but probably later when I get a PC that can run, a good stick that can help me fly it. Could I fly the WoE with a mouse? All I have is this laptop :( @Swift What do you mean by SF1 and SF2? I assume then that 'SF1' has multiplayer? I found Lock On: Platinum for $19 yesterday but when I buy any Lock On game, it'll have to be FC2 with its updated flight models.
egorter Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 I got platinum at best buy for $20 and FC2 is in the box Quando Omni Flunkus Moritati Master sergeant shooter sergeant important person of sergeants extreme:gun_rifle:
SgtPappy Posted November 3, 2010 Author Posted November 3, 2010 (edited) Oh wow.. really? Well I'm buying this from Canada and the price tags on the box looked pretty dated. It's the box with the Eagle on the front, not the MiG. If that means anything. From what I figure, it's got FC2 as well, but I can't be sure. Also, until I after I get a joystick would it be possible to fly offline with a mouse or perhaps PS3 gamepad (the closest thing I have to a flight stick)? :) Edited November 3, 2010 by SgtPappy
egorter Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 yes the one with the two tone eagle covered in vapor. mouse would be tough ps3 gamepad a little better but not much. Quando Omni Flunkus Moritati Master sergeant shooter sergeant important person of sergeants extreme:gun_rifle:
swift Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 @Swift What do you mean by SF1 and SF2? I assume then that 'SF1' has multiplayer? Strike Fighters I and Strike Fighters II is the product vaseline and core for all the subsequent titles like Wings Over Vietnam, Europe, Israel, etc. Unfortunately in Strike Fighters II (therefore WOV2, WOE2 and WOI2) multiplayer is missing. But the venerable Strike Fighters I has multiplayer. Check this reviews SF1 SF2
Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 I like Rise of Flight. Very detailed yet doesn't require a 400 page manual.
SgtPappy Posted November 4, 2010 Author Posted November 4, 2010 @ A.S Yea I used to play IL-2 1946 before my graphics card burned out. I was decent at the game... I say 1:1 kill ratio lol. At the time I had been using a simple joystick which I still have, but it's really crap. Less buttons than a console controller and the throttle takes up two buttons. The only reason I had any competence in IL-2 is due to my nerdage for WWII aircraft, particularly the Spitfires - most of which had automatic cooling systems in RL and in-game. LOMAC in all its modern technological glory, will be a huge step for me.
104th_Crunch Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 (edited) I like Rise of Flight. Very detailed yet doesn't require a 400 page manual. but frame rate, at least me is sucky. I turn all on low and still stutter. I don't think it is a config thing either. GTX 280, Core Duo @ 3.6, 4GB RAM The most non-uber sim I play is Wings of Prey (thanks Moa!). There is still lots of fidelity. Almost as much as FC's jet fighters really in terms of flight model (not the Su-25), and the graphics are the best in simming on the PC right now I think. Also, easy to learn. Of course when BoB:SOW is released, I won't touch it ever again. Edited November 4, 2010 by Crunch
SgtPappy Posted November 4, 2010 Author Posted November 4, 2010 Thanks for the links Swift! Good stuff. BoB: SoW is intense...
Crash_Fistfight Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 After the ED sims I think IL2 1946 is one of greatest sims ever made not for realism or graphics but for sheer scope, i've been playin for 8-9 years and I haven't flown everything yet. The romance of that era of military avaition and design really appeals to me.

Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 but frame rate, at least me is sucky. Too bad. I get over 50 fps constantly with v-synch on at 60 hz. ROF is smooth and has great atmosphere.
