Stretch Posted November 14, 2010 Posted November 14, 2010 So way back when I was getting my pilot's license, for the night portion, my instructor explained I should always carry onboard a white flashlight for emergencies and a red flashlight for normal use, to preserve my night vision. Now I see both the Black Shark and the Warthog use this sickly blue-green color for their night or NVIS-compatible lighting. Has there been a study recently that showed turquoise protects your night vision better than red? KillaALF Posted November 14, 2010 Posted November 14, 2010 I'm guessing the lighting is primarily there to be used with NVGs, not the naked eye.
Avilator Posted November 14, 2010 Posted November 14, 2010 KillaALF is correct, the wavelength used for the "sickly" lighting is tuned so that it does not "flood" NVGs, like any other color would. Eddie Posted November 14, 2010 Posted November 14, 2010 I'm guessing the lighting is primarily there to be used with NVGs, not the naked eye. Correct. Red light is not compatible with NVGs and has the same effect as white light would. The green light used in NVIS compatible cockpits is at a frequency that NVGs tune out. In addition, the MFDs/MHDDs/MFCDs some more modern aircraft have a night setting which is also invisible when viewed through NVGs. 1
lubey Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 Are the formation lights all green as well for the same reason? I'm wondering why they didn't make the port side ones red? 26-J39 Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 Are the formation lights all green as well for the same reason? I'm wondering why they didn't make the port side ones red? I would say so ;) Correct. Red light is not compatible with NVGs and has the same effect as white light would.
