twobells Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 (edited) Newbie DCS A-10 pilot here. A couple of quick questions: 1: I keep finding it a struggle to keep my nose level, the power seems immense! The hog keeps wanting to rise above 20 degrees inclination, any ideas? 2: Without pedals which keys do you find most comfortable on the Hotas to use as rudders? twobells Posted November 24, 2010 Author Posted November 24, 2010 I just got the TM Warthog today but 'trim' (which is my HAT stick) seems set to camera for some reason. I haven't installed t.a.r.g.e.t yet as I want to try the default settings. No and Yes UP = Free-Flight/Weapons deployment M/R = manoeuvre = 7 degree angle. Utilized at take-off. DOWN = 20 degree angle. Utilized at Landing. oho Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 I had problems to get the full loaded plane up in some quick missions before the end of the airstrip with flaps down 7 degrees. When I put them up it was no problem at all - how come?

twobells Posted November 24, 2010 Author Posted November 24, 2010 I am super-impressed with the TM hog, the QC, tactile response etc is superb. IN trying to avoid the problems other hog-owners have had I installed the HOTAS to my main board usb slots in the hope I'll avoid similar problems. My next task is to complete my 360 turn without deviating too much, I am struggling to maintain a constant turn angle, could trim have a role here? Frederf Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 You could certainly trim pitch up in a turn. In your standard 30 degree bank level turn you bank over, apply pitch up to keep the TVV on the horizon, increase throttle slightly to maintain speed, and coordinate rudder into the turn with a slight press on the inboard pedal.
GGTharos Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 Yes, it does. You'll notice that the A-10 has a tendency to want to return to the trimmed position. Any time you are doing a maneuver where you must hold the stick in one place constantly, trim it out instead. I am super-impressed with the TM hog, the QC, tactile response etc is superb. Trim isn't normally used for turns (at least in my experience), since you'd just have to go back to the original trim setting when the turn is over. The important thing to remember during turns is that you also need to pull back on the stick through the turn. When the aircraft is banked, part of its lift is turned horizontally, so you need to increase lift (by pulling back on the stick) in order to compensate and maintain a correct pitch attitude. Roll/yaw trim is used more for balancing out turning tendencies caused by non-symmetrical weapon loads, battle damage, etc. And yes, pitch trim is absolutely essential. Usually only larger, jet-type aircraft have roll and yaw trim, but even the smallest aircraft have pitch trim, otherwise it would be hellish to fly :joystick: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] My rig: i7 3770K oc'd to 4.7 GHz | Asus Maximus 5 Extreme mobo | 4 x 8 GB Crucial Ballistix Elite DDR3 | 2 x EVGA GTX 680 in SLI | Asus Xonar Phoebus audio card | OCZ Vertex 4 512 GB SSD My peripherals: Dell U3011 30" at 2560x1600 | TM HOTAS Warthog | Saitek Combat Pedals | TrackIR 5 | Logitech G13 | Sennheiser HD 558 | Razer Black Widow | Razer Imperator

effte Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 If someone doesn't have pedals what's the best position on the Cougar/Warthog for rudder? I'd do without. The Hog is not an aircraft which requires heavy use of pedals. They're nice to have, but unlike prop sims, you can live without having them. ----- Introduction to UTM/MGRS - Trying to get your head around what trim is, how it works and how to use it? - DCS helos vs the real world.
Dethmagnetic Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 If you already shelled out for the TM Warthog, why not just buy a set of pedals? You can probably get them for like 1/5th of what you paid for the HOTAS. kylania Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 If someone doesn't have pedals what's the best position on the Cougar/Warthog for rudder? I use the default Z and X keys. Only time I really end up using rudder is during take off and landing when my throttle is going to be max or idle the whole time so taking my left hand off throttle doesn't matter much to me. RogueRunner Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 The lift formula will show that as you increase speed, so does lift, ie nose will rise. Just trim her out. If you change either your power or speed you will have to retrim for level flight. It's just how things work. On your second point, if you can afford a Warthog then dude, get some pedals man :P The Saiteks are cheap in comparison! With the price of ammunition these days do not expect a warning shot.
Tango Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 (edited) Hi, Always trim in level flight. Remember that thrust changes as well as speed changes will affect trim, too. Flaps will also affect trim to a large degree - flaps down will result in a pitch down as the center of pressure moves aft. Speed brakes result in a pitch moment due to the increased drag on the upper surfaces, which being above the CoG result in a pitch up. I noticed the aircraft accelerates better clean, but again this is not really surprising. The additional lift also induces drag. Unfortunately you don't get something for nothing. If you're heavy on a hot day, try and hold it in ground effect, get the gear up then pull up the flaps. Watch the pitch up and sink rate, and pull to keep the aircraft level. In ground effect the aircraft has reduced drag and will accelerate well. Best regards, Tango. Edited November 25, 2010 by Tango
