More "Sims" popping up

It appears more and more flight oriented games are popping up...

This looks like a hawx/Birds of Prey type of air combat action, but there are still more and more of these dropping every year it seems.

 

We've definitely entered a new era for flight simulation, DCS series, Rise of Flight and upcoming SOW BOB....(fighter ops and Jet Thunder pending).

 

These action air combat games can lure the young ones in and awaken the sleeping sim giant within. They'll soon (hopefully) move onto more high fidelity sims and alas...the market COULD grow.

 

Wishful thinking to it's max no doubt, but i'm feeling positive today ;)....perhaps it's all the snow in London.

Hmm... HAWX/Birds of Prey lay in completely different categories.

HAWX - is shoot-em-up with no learning curve, and with bunch of stuff made absolutely dumb.

While Birds of Prey when on max settings in some aspects more realistic than IL-2 series.

That's true, Birds of Prey was the more simplified console version of Wings of Prey. I tried the demo on 360 of Birds and HATED the simulation settings, too difficult with the controller, impossible with the range of motion the controllers allow.

 

Wings of Prey is better, but still no real "flight dynamics" apart from stalls ... Hawx is yeah completely different. IL-2 I think has Wings of Prey beat in terms of realism, graphically no, but flight models and map sizes yes. (IMHO by the way after flying both)

 

My point is simply there are more flight oriented games coming out... no matter their fidelity. Much more than 4 years ago, Apache Air Assault, Wings of Prey, new ace combat, hawx, that weird alien fighter one (Radikal Combat or something) etc.

 

5-8 years ago it was all FPS and RPG/strategy games really, hardly any "flying games".

I got your point, yes, I agree that flight-sims as a genre are reborn now! Wide variety of games with different fidelity are here and continue to coming in near future!

Notice how I didn't say "flight sims" ... they're like POT...the GATEWAY drug INTO flight SIMS...or potentially they are. Trust me, I would never put HAWX and FLIGHT SIMS in the same category. Even reading the press release for the link I posted it said "flight sim" and reading the rest of the presented features it's not going to be a sim at all....they just don't have anything to call it. Flight Sim to the general market IS hawx. To the average person, air combat IS Top Gun, HAWX etc.

 

To us obviously it's a gross GROSS misunderstanding ;).:pilotfly:

Alright, who fed the troll? Discussing anything gaming related thats not Falcon 4 or DCS related with Mower around is like giving a bucket of Viagra to senior citizens. It's just a bad idea.

 

But this needs to be said. :thumbup: Any reason for a new player to consider buying a joystick is a good reason. I can see their thinking now... "Well I've got this joystick, and that game was alot of fun, but it just wasn't good enough. Hey, whats this Flaming Cliffs 2 thing? Wow FC2 is way more fun, but the other players keep talking about Digital Wombat Simulator or something of the sort...."

 

Drop the hate, and learn to appreciate something thats ultimately good for the genre you care so much for.

There are some buttons to learn, but 10 year olds can be strangely resourceful. Get em started off on the right foot...

I think i have not expressed myself good enough, sorry for that. I wasn´t asking about the keyboard input keys such as gears, boards etc. etc. those he already figured out and he does actually pretty good so far, but i was wondering, if there are any "buttons" in the cockpit iteself, because if, then i must have missed it.

And yes, he does get started off on the right wings ;).

Thank you for the quick answer, but the reason i bought this game is to give himself a general idea of "flying", there is no interest in "shooting". :D

Hehe, well hardly, it's just a natural progression following an interest or hobby. Start out small or simple and as you grow so does your pursuit of bigger and better things ;).

My first flight sim was Novalogic's F-22 Lightening 3. I enjoyed it a lot. It had a "Hollywood style" gameplay and flying that I felt like I were Maverick (Tom Cruise) :D. But then I played Lomac and realized that you cannot yank your plane here and there in the real world.

 

Finishing comment: If you like to get the real feeling of flying a plane then play Lock-on FC2. And if you like to showboat like Tom Cruise then play HAWX. :D

Sure there will be people who play HAWX etc and not want to go further, but it is ludicrous to think that there are not people who will play it then want something more. I played early EA and DID game/sims then wanted more. The game mode of DCS-A10 is there for a reason. I play FC2 but I can handle DCS fidelity and want more :) Elitist attitude is silly. Everyone starts somewhere.
