Sure there will be people who play HAWX etc and not want to go further, but it is ludicrous to think that there are not people who will play it then want something more. I played early EA and DID game/sims then wanted more. The game mode of DCS-A10 is there for a reason. I play FC2 but I can handle DCS fidelity and want more :) Elitist attitude is silly. Everyone starts somewhere.

I started in F14 Fleet Defender, but that was years ago.

I still enjoy Ace Combat, but can't stand Hawx. I'm just getting into these more serious flight sims that ED and some others produce. I don't like Ace Combat less than I did, but I'm loving the complexity of the black shark.

Learning these things is a long and enjoyable road.

F14 Fleet Defender was hardcore for its day. Loved that sim.

It would be more like "Well I've got this joystick, and that game was alot of fun, but it just wasn't good enough. Hey, whats this Flaming Cliffs 2 thing? Wow FC2 is too bloody hard, I've got no time to learn all these butons... where's that HAWX again?"

Replace FC2 with the original Flanker and HAWX with US Navy Fighters and you've just described me in 1996. :D

A rant...

Bear with me as there will be a point to this. I thought I was a flying legend during my U.S. NAVY Fighters and EF2000 days until I tried Fighter Duel and Warbirds and was handed many a smoking holes and session after session of hair pulling, butt whoopin' goodness. I was a simpleton and was getting annihilated left, right, upside down and I couldn't figure out why. Frustrated, I started to play Warcraft II, C&C, Starcraft, etc and completely dropped flying like a bag of burden. One day I saw a used copy of Hornet Korea, a game Mower is too uber for I'm sure, and one look on the back and I fell in love with its graphics. But this game had an awesome multimedia training that opened a new sky for me, and I realized there was more to flying than banking and yanking on cheap joystick. After months of online play with friends, I became quite a dog fighter and decided to rejoin Warbirds. I became quite a killer in WB if I may say so. I would fly alone in a Stang and religiously hunt the 190s and 109s because they were the ones that frustrated me the most when I was a cherry. :D So much so I had several squadrons trying to recruit me.

Then on one day while going through old reviews from the stacks of gaming mags I had, I happened upon this little jem called Flanker, a game I had returned out of frustration loooog time ago. I went out and bought a copy and have never looked back.

So let's recap...I went from NAVY Fighters to EF2000 and Flanker (bought the two at about the same time) then Fighter Duel, Warbirds, Hornet Korea and back to Flanker. From that point on I went all hardcore with Back to Baghdad, F4, etc. See the pattern? If it weren't for "games", especially Hornet Korea I would have given up flight sim after all that butt whooping from online pilots in Fighter Duel and Warbirds. I think, ultimately, it boils down to the person's love of flight, good reviews and the urge to master defeats.

I haven't been doing any dogfighting, been years since I had a joystick, and though I suck at radar and BVR fight, I bet I could easily kick some of the self proclaimed grognards' @ss in a dogfight. :D

Apologize for rant...

And it sounds like YOU need a visit to my re-education camp. :P

I would love to see your powerpoint presentation used in your re-education camp. Although unlike those living in North Korea I doubt it would be effective against me, as I was brought up the think critically and to be pretty open minded. Plus it helps that I like making counter points to people like you. I once successfully compared an A2A dogfight to a Pokemon battle. If needed I'll bring out the Chewbacca defense... which NEVER FAILS. :megalol: But I digress. Everyone must have a starting point. While we did have MS Flight Sim 95 or something like that, and a few Jane's sims (USNF, Longbow 2, F-15) the thing that hooked me when I was young was Sim Copter for PC, U.N. Squadron and Pilotwings on the SNES. Even then though I took long break from flight games. Quake, Battlefield, Counterstrike, Starcraft, and Command and Conquer tended to contribute. Yet I came back. Most likely due to the enjoyment I got from those early games and a re-ignited curiosity/annoyance caused by Battlefield 2.

I cut my sim teeth on F-19 and Gunship back in the day. Now think about it HAWXS is probably more complex than those games. Simmers have to start somewhere and DCS is probably a little too much to jump right into. HAWXS serves a very important purpose to the community.

Mower and Grimes, if you two were ever to meet in RL, I'm sure you'd be the best of friends. The kind of friends who save seats for each other the first day of school only to have the teacher separate you later on for too much talking. (just to be clear I'm not insinuating you're immature in anyway by the school boy analogy, just the innocence of it.)

I'm sure of it! :)

That's the same rationale that says marijuana is a "gateweay" drug.

There's no evidence to support either instance.

So your assertion may or may not be so.

One thing, however, I think we can all agree upon, is I am a loud over-opinionated arse.

HAWX has a good graphic , I purchased it for my nephew, since he doesnt know all the things that he should know for a simulator. Sometimes I'm playing with him ... even if it isn't tactical and its realism is a smile , it's still funny.

Ace Combat's great fun. It's no sim for sure, but my tastes are mixed in how I enjoy myself. Sometimes I want spectacle and explosions everywhere, and sometimes I want to use my brain more than my reflexes.

I always say that variety is the spice of life.

Truth it was. It was great fun also, the same as EF2000 V2 was.

Its a pity those 2 sims don t work on PC anymore.

Fleet defender for the carrier and Tomcat, and EF2000 for the settings, the region choosen is awesome, lot of terrain masking lot of nasty surprises, and lot of tactical target... do that or do this.

Without counting EF2000 had the first dynamic campaign. manage weapon, redesign missions, invade neutral space or not. If you put the AWAC module of AIR TOTAL WAR, then it would be a jewel.

Having a re-lauch of this game is still a dream to me. Don t need to get him as complex as A10C, a bit more than is was and i would enjoy it a lot.

Search for "DOSBox" program for Win7. Maybe it will help with relaunch those classics ;)

Check for compatibility Tags:

I found EF2000 v2 there...

Is DOSBox compatible with Vista or Win7?

I know i know, but i have serious problem with controlers when trying dos box.

And beside without even a near graphic upheaval it would be sad.

What i really what is a real re-launch.

Not if DCS could launch other theaters... Working in the ef 2000 for BS would be marvllous too.

If i wanted dumb flying i would very much welcome some space flying..

I know i m getting old, because i REALLLY miss a X-WING / TIE fighter game.

Would be awesome to see the old fully Star wars souled, X-wing/Tie fighter/Bwing games do a comeback with modern tech, or new game around star wars spaceships universe.

A pity George Lucas is an donkey ass and hate star wars fans (i did not say fanatic).

Or even any good single player very well plot written space sim. (Eve not a space sim, its a space game with space vessels)

Check for "Eve". Very nice MMO but I wouldn't call it dumb - it's complex product. Very nice RPG game too but has huge disadvantage - monthly subscription...

Yes POKO, far from dumb, that wasnt what i mean, i have a friend that play it and i find it awesome, even if a bit of a cold relationship with the player, which is a no go for me.

But its not a stick spaceflightsim, i mean, its not like your piloting a X-wing is you get my meaning.
