Those are simulators. The purpose is to go do something with the real-life device.

Did you hear the rumor that DCS is based on software used to train (conversion training) A-10C pilots? ;)

The purpose of this thing is to be an accurate simulation of the real thing, such that the real military can use it for training and consumers can get an (edited) version to play with. Same thing with X-Plane. Is that a game or a sim? Does the nature of the product change simply depending on whether the user is me or a flight school? (For reference, I did use a desktop simulator (though with a simpit) for parts of my IRL flight training - even for some of the actual flight parts like identifying and recovering spin and so on. I then loaded the same product up on my laptop for fun. There's zero difference between the actual software product, so it's nature cannot change.)

The purpose of use can change, but a wrench is a wrench. Even if you use it as a hammer, it's still a wrench, and if you don't use it at all - it's still a wrench and this discussion is pointless. ;)

This is a game. Very good and highly detailed, yes, but still a game.

"eye twitching uncontrollably" Is the word game being used in here? Please let it go so my eye can return to normal. Repeat after me. Sim-u-la-tion. Whew I am tired.

blaster - it's not a 'study' sim because you have to study. Seriously?

It's a study of one aircraft in exquisite detail, as was BS before it.

I suspect you missed the irony here. ;)

The age old discussion again, gents.

Good points being made here, but its an endless discussion because it depends on how you technically use the words 'sim' and 'game'. By the definition of both words DCS is both.

Heck, even Simcity is both; its made for entertainment purposes and yet it simulated real life workings or aspects of things. Effectively making it both a game and a sim in the most general sense of the word.

But I dont think thats the intent of the discussion when we look at highly detailed packages like DCS. The question is, though, wether we should look differently at products like DCS?

Isn't this just a game and a sim as well at the end of the day, despite most of us thinking its a special piece of software simulating something most of us dont see on an every day basis. Isnt that what makes it so special for most? But isnt it meant for entertainment, so a game by definition as well?

Agreed, a masterpiece that reminds me of loading up DI's Tornado many years ago. :D

Yep, very much so. Ive still got Tornado as a keepsake. A10 is equally if not more significant. Imagine where we will be with fidelity in another 10 years from now.

It shouldn't matter what you call it as long as you enjoy it at whatever level of detail you wish to enjoy it at. The point is that the original poster thinks quite highly of this "simulation- a sub-genre of games." And on that account there is plenty to enjoy here. Even if you are the hardest of the hardcore flight sim enthusiasst or a die-hard Nintendo Fan there is no denying the universal smirk that gets imprinted on your face the first time you fire the A-10s GAU-8. Personally arguing semantics is all fun and good, but ultimately does very little to establish a consensus as this topic will surely be brought up again. So we might as well get back to the original topic of appreciating this (pick 1) A. Sim, B. Game. C. Gamulation. D. Digital Mistress.

..... seriously?

My first thread on this forum becomes the debate on game v's sim? Way to ruin it :(

The intent of my post was to express my gratitude to all involved. They've created an environment where i can lose hours at a time immersed doing something that is close to my heart and I enjoy.

I guess debate is always healthy but i never meant or wanted to stir up something that could be a problem.

The silver lining is until the poster made mention of trackir i never knew what it was. I saw all these vids of people having amazing control of their view and their zooming but i never knew how. So now i have to earn even more brownie points for that as well!!! :)

Anyways, bring on more conversation and simulation ;)

We're sorry sammyj. I read back and it already went awry on page 1! ;)

At least you're introduced to the sensitivity about calling this a 'game' properly now! :D

If you're the DIY type, you should also look into Freetrack and FaceTrackNoIR. TrackIR tends to be easier since developers specifically support it (particularly the case here) but if you're willing to fiddle you can save yourself some cash.

That said, I don't regret buying either of my TIRs.

Well, I'm gonna take a wild guess and say I may have learned the art of irony before you did. :smilewink:

And no, I don't think irony means made of iron ... any more than you think Aluminium is the correct way to pronounce that shiny metal.

Yes, it was meant to be irony ... perhaps I could have been more metallic! :D
