Hi,

The sound that gives me goosebumps is the sound of a jet engine. Either a commercial jet or a fighter, the scream, the roar is just amazing.

Just watched some vids on YT of a A-10 flyby. As soon as it passes you hear the raw thunder of air displacement combined with the scream of the outlet. And when it passes and flying ayway i hear this very nice...how do i describe it..."echo" that differs is volume (cant describe it better, im dutch). Have a look at this vid for example. 2:35 to 2:50 gives an example of what i mean.

Why cant this sound be implemented in games?

I also watched different YT vids of the DCS A-10. The sound of the flyby is way to lame...how comes? Is sound the underdog in game development?

The easy question is: yes, sound is an underdog in game development. Not only because relatively few have a powerful sound card, but also because more advanced simulation of sound = more CPU cycles.

Also, the focus in this specific simulator and it's sound engine (which does simulate things like mach cone, doppler, attenuation and so on) is what the pilot would hear, not some random passer-by. :P

And from your point of view, what kind of Soundcard are you refering to? Ive got a Creative SB X-FI Extreme gamer. Looking at gamers buying a new rig, they will choose for onboard sound so they have more money left for graphics. Would be nice if devs would make the sound as important as graphics. In that way you need a certain SB card to enjoy the full sound immersion.

Concerning DCS A-10, i was only refering to the flyby screens. And i must also point out that the sound through YT vids is bad. Im truly looking forward onto its full release.

Well, most "gamers" have nothing beyond a singular little Realtek chip nailed to their motherboard, whose only real fancy feature is EAX which is a standard literally no-one uses anymore. :P

As for treating sound as equally important to graphics, well, it just isn't. Some people may consider it so, but on the other hand some people wouldn't mind playing the sim in wireframe as long as that ensures fluid gameplay. The important question in all these preference things is: how large is the segment that this applies to? DCS:A-10C already has the most realistic and capable sound engine on the planet for simulation type stuff (the one that was made for FC2 and then transplanted into DCS:BS), doing much more would almost literally be money thrown into the lake. (I'm sure you would enjoy it, and many others would, but if it's 2 million dollars spent making it and it only persuades 5000 people to buy it, that's a net loss of 1.7 million dollars just for a nice F3 soundbite... ;) )

*CAVEAT: Obviously, all dollar numbers are procured from some random place where the sun don't shine, only meant for illustration.

It's already in. The DCS engine even features radiation patterns (the engine sounding different from different angles), something i have not seen in ANY other game. There are just so many different things to take into consideration, to get it to sound right in any circumstance is just whishful thinking. After all, it is a simulation and thus a mathematical abstraction of reality.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

I understand what you mean. After EAX it all became very quiet...

My post is based on YT vids. Im sure i will be blown alway as soon as i play the game on my own rig! Cant wait to:pilotfly:

Thats what i was looking for: radiation patterns. Im waiting for the full release and then im going to study for 1 year and then i hope i have enough knowledge to fly the A-10!!

I tried that audio mod and the Mk20s lost their sound completely. And they forgot the sound of the JFS on the F15.....

no sounds lost for me so far, my audio mods are high quality samples, everything checked prior to launch, the lockon fc2.0 audio engine is improved but does sometimes from reports not reproduce audios.

nothing lost in f15 sounds either my end.

playback is fine for me though.

BTW, if you want to experience a really good sounds package for FC2.0, give this mod a tryout

http://files.lockon.ru/en/101/

Im still with FC 1.12B. I have tried some sound mods and here and there i find some very nice sounds but there are also flaws which keeps me reverting it back to the default sounds. Dont get me wrong here. The sound of LO is good! But i just notice that sound doenst make the same progression as graphics. But as EtherealN earlier stated "The important question in all these preference things is: how large is the segment that this applies to? DCS:A-10C already has the most realistic and capable sound engine on the planet for simulation type stuff (the one that was made for FC2 and then transplanted into DCS:BS), doing much more would almost literally be money thrown into the lake."

So yeah, that is how the game industry works and i totally agree and do understand it.

Im gonna wait for the A-10 . Im very sure i will be suprised by the sound! I cannot judge sound based on a YT vid.

i have created the distortion effect gives the sounds a big boost in realism.

check out my utube collection. real as it gets :>) , need a decent audio card to run my audio mods though.

take the mods or leave them but you wont find much better around.

The sound of the JFS whine was never reproduced with the F15 in any of the Lock On games, so it wasn't technically lost, just never there.

Diveplane,

I have listened to your YT vids of the A-10 and the F-15.

The A-10 sound is much better that the default allthough i hear a "tincan" sound, like if it is flying trough a metal tube...As for me it doenst sound like its finished.

The F-15 sound is just awsome!! Great work there mate! The raw thunder and screaming is all there!

Keep on doing the great work!!

I like the F-16 sound that FighterOps had on its web site before they took it down it featured a really awesome startup sound from inside the cockpit. Thats some thing that would be awesome for a flight sim like DCS to feature the real JFS sounds from inside the cockpit.
