Hello,

I read a funny statement in the novel I purchased "Warthog: Flying the A-10 in the Gulf War" by William L.Smallwood. (very good novel by the way)

It says something like: "Above 500 feet we definitely must put on our oxygen masks"...All this to say that A-10 pilots really were used to fly very very low and that above 500 feet it seems very high :-)

And by the way, when is Beta 5 coming out? :-)

"Always check your 6 o'clock if you want to live!"

Beta 5 won't be.... beta 6 will be....

AND

It's not a novel - that implies fiction. "Warthog" is non-fictional accounts of flying the FOA-10G in the Gulf War.

If you don't know what I mean by FOA-10G... read the book. It's great.

i think i posted this earlier today...

It is a good book. I think that quote was when they were introducing the A10 into night operations and the pilots were told they were going to be flying much higher than they were used to.

"Heck we were of the belief that if we went higher than 500 feet we needed to go on oxygen"

...or something like that.

My favorite quote in the whole book :)

:thumbup:my favorite quote is " Then, after news of Sheehy's kill came in, an O-6[colonel] walked up and said, ' so tell me, how many air-to-air kills does the A-10 have now?' I replied, 'Two' And really loud he said, 'What? Two?' Then he turned around and asked the f-16 guys, just as loud as he could, 'how many air kills do you have now?' They just looked at him and shook their heads.

The 1st A-10A kill was from Capt Bob Swain using his GAU-8 as he couldn't attain a lock with the AIM-9 due to the background temp and how low the helicopter was ... if I recall correctly.

I used to work with him when he flew O-2A's at Patrick AFB, FL - then became a Guardsman or Reservist (I think he left Active Duty to be a American Airlines Pilot [don't remember]) -- great guy and very easy to work with... long time ago....

What I remember best from "Warthog" is their description of crossing the Atlantic. That sounded rather intense and scary. :)

Good book. And it helps understand the way it works. From searching targets, to destroying it. In game I always try to keep maverics. IRL is different. You want to destroy target and to do it ASAP. And how many times they have problems with mav's ...

that was later in the war when the mav's started to go dumb. usually they would try and get relieved of their 3,000lbs drag of bombs first.

makes sense to me to keep the most effective weapon as long as possible. of course you could argue that

yeah when i ordered it from amazon i had to take a used one cuz it wasnt in stock. meanwhile they re-stocked on it ^^

EDIT: btw, anyone has this book? The Modern Hog Guide: The A-10 Warthog Exposed

It's rather expensive but sounds really promising. not sure if there's any additional value to the DCS:W manual. but after having finished said 'Warthog' and nearly 'A-10s over Kosovo' i need more stuff to read

I love this quote:
