Just purchased this morning...impressed (yet, overwhelmed)

that video card worries me.... have you flown around and fired the gun at targets? a 9600GT is a rather old video card.

I would definitely say a track IR is a necessity... it will eliminate the need for a POV hat and with a cheaper stick you will need that. also with a full pit a TIR is necessary.

The Sim uses an amazing amount of Hat buttons on the HOTAS... Ive never seen so many before. I bought a Saitek X65 from ebay for $280 and Im happy with its features and quality. I wanted my stick to have a lot of buttons/Hats for other sims and not be "plane specific". The CH and TM products are better quality but you really pay a premium for them.

Good luck trying to get your wife to go along with this... You may want to try and cure cancer as it may be easier LOL.

The video card seems fine. I was worried about stutter or have to run it on a lower setting, but so far I haven't had to do that. But, I haven't done any campaigns or anything, but the training missions (I've only completed up to Guns/Rockets) seem to be ok, fluid-wise. It may bog down when alot of things are going on, but I haven't got into alot of 'fighting'.

And yea, I do probably have a better chance in curing cancer.

This is a great post....and some great responses. I am also a newb (I bought at Beta 4 release but didn't play much until final) and am still overwhelmed. I have yet to get all the way through the startup tutorial!! LOL.

There is some good info in this thread for newbs. I was almost afraid to ask simple questions, since so many of you guys seem 'hardcore.' :pilotfly:

Cheers!

I can do just fine without HOTAS, yes hotas will make things a bit easier, and adds some immersion, but one can manage without one just fine when you get used to it. i would choose Track ir over hotas any day..

Don't be. That's always been my "thing" getting nuggets set up, and providing a place to get the most common issues solved. My forum is best these days mostly because I had to let my website expire to the "free" version due to unemployment. I can't really update it, but it contains relevant if not dated info. It's got about 50x the content allowed under the free version, and they haven't shut it down yet... lol

My site is not a sub for this one. It's just easier to find some stuff. The volume of activity on this board is a blessing & a curse. It's easy to miss things at the furious pace this board moves at...

I'm sure once I pick up A10 I'll be asking a million questions (and spend hours searching lol), but I'll give a definitive +1 on TrackIR. After getting Black Shark, I flew for a bit without it, because I wasnt sure it was worth it. Ended up picking up a TiR5 Pro, and now cannot imagine ever NOT having it. The immersion is almost surreal, and in combat it frees up your fingers to be helping your situation as opposed to moving your view.

Someday we'll look back on all this and plow into a parked car.

I'm sold on the TrackIR. My birthday is a month away, so I can wait it out. Now I just have to send a link to my wife on where to buy it and beg her nicely that it is the ONLY thing I want

So it begins.... TrackIR, HOTAS, rudder pedals. Next you'll be wanting to upgrade your GPU to fully appreciate the eye candy, then the CPU because complex sims like this are also CPU dependent.

Next you'll be wanting some man cave space and thinking about taking a trip to the hardware store to see what type of frame you can build to better position your HOTAS.

All the while you'll be fighting off the stares, glares, frowns of your other half. Your most common words over the next few months will be "But honey...."

Funny you mention a man-cave. I already have one, complete with my RC Heli's. I spend WAY too much on that hobby, but I tell my wife I can't take the $$ when I die :megalol:

But, I better not push it with a Warthog HOTAS...so I just may as well try a TrackIR

One followup question regarding that: Do you have a window at your 6 o'clock (or thereabouts)?

Nope...it's about my 11 o'clock position from my monitors...my back is to my door so my wife can see everything I do on my 'puter (I SWEAR I don't look at anything bad :music_whistling: ). I have of those corner desks, and it's the only corner I can put it unless I want to block my closet space.

Welcome to the A10.

1) Read the manual.

2) Post your questions in the forum - I've found the people here to be friendly and very helpful.

3) Do the training missions first and work your way up.

4) Recognize that the realism of this sim has a steep learning curve and hang in there. It will all be worth it.

I see TrackIR4 PRO is cheaper ($99.95) than TrackIR5...do they give about the same performance in DCSW and FSX? I could live with IR4 PRO if there isn't that much of a performance difference.

I would highly suggest going for a internet / local retailer, as they are (generally off course) cheaper than the manufacturer (amazon/ebay/....where do you live?). I don't know about the performance regarding v5, so someone who took the leap from 4 to 5 will have to answer that question. DCSW and FSX do give different responses, but that's to be expected as they are two different sims. Fiddling with the profile (bear with it! Don't give up, it can get quite a hassle), is essential.

OK, thanks. I have a month to search for a good price so I can give that info to my CFO, ie, my wife

TIR5 has a bigger camera so it tracks better and is alot smoother right out of the box. It's a more refined TIR5 but TIR4 is still good and does the job really well. You can achieve the same level of smoothness by tweaking your curves.

If I had my TIR4 I wouldn't have bought 5 - the performance is almost the same and not worth the upgrade. However my TIR4 fubar'ed on me so I had no choice.

If you're on a budget then TIR4 will still do the job fine but as with all hobby things... if you can afford that little bit more...

Wow thats interesting... I would have assumed that a 512 Meg card would be a slide show. hmmmmm. I wonder if that new AMD CPU is helping out the sim.

How do you like that new CPU? I have a Phenom III 720 and Im not too impressed with it.

I used to build gaming PCs (Predator Gaming PC) and the wifeys used to kill a lot of their husband's gaming aspirations. You would think they would let them go for it but they would rather have a "normal" guy that goes out to the bar, gets drunk and cheats on them LOL. Girls love the Drama

As far as learning the sim, I would not recommend the training missions.. they are very hard to read (text is too small) and the voiceovers are hard to hear (at least in Beta 4) and if that isnt enough, they tend to lock up!

I printed out the procedure for firing a Mav, printed out the HOTAS functions and then printed out my stick layout. I used them for the first 2 weeks and now everything is almost committed to muscle memory. Very rewarding once you learn it all.

I love my AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE. I overclocked it to 3.52Ghz, which was easy. I haven't tried it on the stock speed as I made the OC changes on my mobo when I built it. I guess the 6Gb memory helps out the graphics alot...I just don't have any complaints in the graphic side of DCSW. It looks very nice, clean, and smooth. I may one day upgrade my video card, but for now, it works fine. I went from a Pentium D 3.4Ghz w/ 4Gb memory (same video card) and I couldn't run FSX on good graphic settings. As soon as I booted up my new CPU, mobo, and faster memory, it was like a whole new world.

I just got done doing the 'Unguided Bombs' Training Mission. THAT was fun (until I got too low, dropped my bombs and took damage...oops!)...well, back to more fun

Its been over a month for me and I'm still learning rookie things and have a long way to go.. so don't get overwhelmed. Take it one day at a time. Try learning new things every day.
