STP Dragon Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 (edited) Hi guys, What did I wrong when the CDU is displaying this and what can I do to fix this? Once the CDU is displaying **** it is not possible anymore to copy WPs or to enter coordinates. Every time you try it "CDU INPUT ERROR" is displayed. Conure Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Could be a number of reasons causing it to happen, though to get rid of it press the clear (Clr I believe) on the CDU or UFC. STP Dragon Posted March 20, 2011 Author Posted March 20, 2011 Changeing the page was working fine. But once I switched back to the WP-page it was still the same. It is ablosutly strange! I don't know what to do to get this behavior and I don't know what to do to fix it. In this case the CDU is useless and I have to take a new A-10. E61-v1T1 Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 This has already happened to me, and the only way to fix I found was the comments of Speed, a new alignment. Not sure, but I think this happens when you try to create a new WP and is given the same name that was given to a previous WP "TGT1, TGT2 etc, again I'm not sure that this is the case, but what I suspect. Btw, this happened to me in the mission pack done for you Dragon, which happens to take this opportunity to thank the great work. Autopilot, TAD.... everything was not working anymore. And a new align of the CDU by flight is also not possible (as I know). thisisentchris87 Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 (edited) And a new align of the CDU by flight is also not possible (as I know). In flight alignment or realignment of the CDU is possible in flight. I have experienced this issue before, I just change the way point on the CDU. If you look at the first line on the left, it looks like this ±****, change that to 0 or however many way points you have. That should bring it back. WarriorX Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 To clear the asterisk error try this. Try inputting a known waypoint in the current flightplan into the CDU scratchpad. (for example MSN001) you will notice the scratchpad try to auto complete the entry. Then press OSB 6 on the RMFCD or the right LSK 1 on the CDU. This should bring up the data on waypoint MSN001. Now you can switch to your chosen waypoint and resume normal operation. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] "Is that you John Wayne?.......Is this me?" But it works normally after, you can change the waypoint with no problem. This sounds right to me... I'd really like to know what it does this sometimes, and if it's a bug or what. It doesn't always do it. It doesn't seem to be directly related to violent maneuvering or firing multiple bursts in quick succession, which are both things I've tried to do to reproduce the problem. It's easy to fix as WarriorX says, I normally just enter '1' into the scratchpad and press the waypoint number OSB on the left (second from the top?) and it goes back to normal. I'd still like to know why it occurs and if it's because I'm doing something wrong. The waypoint page for Mark Z seems to come up automatically when you employ weapons. Maybe it's somehow related to firing when outside of certain parameters?

Osirith Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Thanks for the suggested solution. This problem just happened to me yesterday for the first time. Did a long mission (should be Georgian Hammer 3 or 4), loitering above the battlefield with targets given by two JTACs. In this mission, I never managed to receive the red triangle datalink and associated data from the JTACs, so I always manually enter the UTM coordinates as a new waypoint entry inside the CDU. I did that several times (guess I created 4 or 5 waypoints for the 4 or 5 targets given by the JTACs), but I got the dreaded CDU ******** display on all fields while trying to enter a new one after that, and all I did try was to no effect (changing CDU display mode, changing page, etc... ). Did not try a full realignment and did not know the WarriorX trick at this time. Will know for the next time it occurs :)
Speed Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 (edited) Dragon, the in-flight align CDU alignment mode uses GPS satellites to align the CDU. It is possible in flight, on ground, anywhere. When you start moving early in the ground alignment process, the CDU will automatically switch to in-flight alignment mode. In-flight alignment mode also automatically enables NAV when it is done aligning. This means that when you are doing a scramble start-up and taxiing as soon as both engines are running, you don't even have to touch your CDU other than turn it on. An in-flight align is complete at "1.4 10.0". EAC, SAS, all that stuff, works perfectly fine with an in-flight align. Sometimes, at least in earlier betas, you would need to restart the in-flight alignment mode because occasionally it would screw up, and wouldn't allow EAC, for example. I believe this is caused by the CDU being a significant way though a normal ground alignment when you start moving, and it switches to in-flight align; it is probably not a bug. You will know when this has happened if your in-flight align has not stopped at 1.4 10.0. This is easy to fix, just click on the "IN FLT" button on the CDU to start a new in-flight align and wait a few minutes. After the new in-flight align has completed, CDU alignment should read "1.4 10.0". If I am doing a "scramble" start up, then from the time that I step into a cold jet to the time I am taking off is usually about two or three minutes, depending on how far I have to taxi. This is because I rely on in-flight align. As soon as both my engines are online I start taxiing, and I usually finish my ramp start in air... sometimes I will be done when I am already at 10k feet :) Edited March 21, 2011 by Speed Intelligent discourse can only begin with the honest admission of your own fallibility.
