tmahring Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 Hi I'm currently using FreeTrack with a WiiMote for headtracking, but i have some problems with it. It needs a lot of tweeking to get it working properly and also it seems the software isn't maintained any more. So I'm currently thinking about buying TrackIR. Has anyone here switched from FreeTrack to TrackIR and can tell me if there is a lot of difference ? Does TrackIR work perfectly out of the box or do i have to tweak it too ? How reliable is it ? Also I'm a smoker and freetrack seems to confuse the glow of a cigarette with an IR led (understandable) and goes crazy. Does TrackIR have the same issue or did they manage to solve that ? Thanks for your help
-Ice Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 TrackIR is worth it. I've not used FreeTrack in a while and used it with just a webcam and I can say TrackIR is smoother and better in all respects. You may WANT to tweak TrackIR profiles to suit your needs and preferences, but you don't NEED to. If you just want to plug-in and play, that's good too. You will want to tweak it eventually, but again this is due to your preferences and not due to hardware shortcomings. I don't smoke so I can't tell you how TrackIR would react to the cigarette though. - Ice
tmahring Posted March 27, 2011 Author Posted March 27, 2011 Thanks for your reply. I forgot something: How far can you turn your head with trackir ? FreeTrack seems to loose the LEDs when I turn my head more than about 15° to one side. I think it's caused by my leds though, still it would be nice to know how TrackIR performes in that matter.

Laidback Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 tmahring...did you make your led's or are you using track-clip pro? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
tmahring Posted March 27, 2011 Author Posted March 27, 2011 I made my own clip. Do they sell the TrackIR clips by themselfe ? How much are they ?
kingpinda Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 (edited) Pro clip is somewhere between 30 and 45 dollars i think. not sure i bought mine as a bundle with trackir5. The led will react to your cigarette though. especially while you inhale and the cigbut becomes red hot. I then usually move my cig out of screen to the right and the image reverts back. I have only used trackir so don't know what differences there are. I only know that I can't fly WITHOUT trackir anymore :) Trackir comes with a hatclip. and you need to either buy the proclip for your headset separately or find a bundle deal. edit: I can move my head 45 to 60 degrees without problems. ussually though I don't need that much of freedom. I have setup my profile to do at most 30 degrees. With this I can look in game over my shoulders. I have a stiff neck and can't even turn my head 90 degrees :) Edited March 27, 2011 by kingpinda
MTFDarkEagle Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 There is a very easy solution for the cigarette problem: Stop smoking :) 1 Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
andysim Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 as a avid user of Track IR since the DCS WH was in beta 1 I cannot fly without it. Ive not tried other tracking systems so cant comment on them but Ive never had any issues with my TIR5. PS I got TIR for the WH but now use it for everything including Arma2/FSX/Ka-50 :joystick:
Laidback Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 I made my own clip. Do they sell the TrackIR clips by themselfe ? How much are they ? I use the clip with my wii remote. Works better than the home made. Just make sure you enter the dimensions correctly. It was about $35. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Burner Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Freetrack+Wiimote+Trackclip pro= perfect HT and use the $160 elsewhere. Burner Intel Core i7 9700 @ 5.1Ghz, Nvidia RTX 2080Ti, Win 10 Pro 64 Bit, HOTAS Hornet, Virpil CM2 Base, MFG Rudders , HP Reverb Pro
tmahring Posted March 28, 2011 Author Posted March 28, 2011 OK, if I have to buy this trackclip pro anyway I will give FreeTrack another chance. Thanks for all your help.
tmahring Posted March 28, 2011 Author Posted March 28, 2011 One more question: How does TrackIR perform in the aspect of axis bleeding ? I mean: In FreeTrack when I move my head left and right without turning this results not only in the desired motion but also in a turn. Same for up/down forward/back. So if I just want to move my head to the right in the cockpit i would have to turn my head a little bit to the left to compensate.
159th_Falcon Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Haven't noticed that, but might have gotten used to it. And mainly fly FC2, where you cant move sideways..... [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] The keeper of all mathematical knowledge and the oracle of flight modeling.:)

tmahring Posted March 28, 2011 Author Posted March 28, 2011 30 - 40 euros i think. you have to use a original nintendo one cause the oem versions often do not recognise more than 2 leds.
