bunraku Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 Anyone help with gunnery? I am moving my J/S quite a bit to try and get my pipper dot on target and then PAC-1 then Fire. I might get 1 or 2 targets on a pass, but i pretty much have to be within very close range and sometimes i'm even shooting in a bank. Obviously i need to practice, but any hints? Also as a matter if interest do ou guys zoom right into the reticule or shoot from a chair position without zoom? Thanx
mtuckner Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 I use my zoom (not Track IR forward lean). I usually come in from about 8,000 feet about 3 miles out and start my dive in onto target, sometimes a bit further out. I get my pipper on early, and PAC-1 and then hold it while releasing control of the stick, it will stabilize you onto your target (you should have engaged PAC with a solid flight path towards the target, not engage PAC while banking or crossing the target). Then depending upon target I engage when the distance on the pipper reads .8 for tanks generally, and 1.5 for non armored and 1.2 miles or so for lightly armored.
Zorg_DK Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 (edited) Increasing x and y curves on the stick to 20 has helped my accuracy. I also zoom in all the way on the HUD and disable trackir. I'm hoping to figure out how to save that view as a snapview.. Edited April 17, 2011 by Zorg_DK "There are only 10 types of people in the world — those who understand binary, and those who don't." 159th_Viper Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 Obviously i need to practice, but any hints? Depends what you're shooting at. Soft-skinned vehicles - disable PAC and strafe, especially relevant to convoys. IFV's, APC's and MBT's better with PAC for obvious reasons. Range also relevant depending on target. Let us know what you are targeting and we may be able to provide tracks - always better/easier to learn through demonstration :) Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? -Ice Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 I use a snap view to zoom in. Like others said, 0.8 or less for tanks, and a good hose --- maybe 200 bullets worth. You may get by with less, but why risk needing a second pass? I've killed soft-skinned targets from 2.0 with about 50 bullets spray, and I prefer to hammer BMPs at 1.8-1.5. Those things are deadly with their guns! - Ice
roob Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Practice and more practice :) Make sure you have plenty of altitude and come in as slow as you can. At least at first. Also, mark the target with the TGP so it's easier to find. And I zoom almost all the time My DCS stream [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Past broadcasts, Highlights Currently too much to do... But watch and (maybe) learn something :)
bunraku Posted April 18, 2011 Author Posted April 18, 2011 Practice and more practice :) Make sure you have plenty of altitude and come in as slow as you can. Does having your airbrakes deployed affect the PAC stabilization?
BiPod Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 (edited) I posted this elsewhere - http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=1129828#post1129828 What I have read somewhere: Both PAC 1 and PAC 2 will engage regardless of airbrake position (look at lower left of HUD), but with airbrakes extended the SAS authority may not be enough to hold the aircraft steady while firing. What I can confirm from experience: I find that with airbrakes extended PAC 1 (first stage trigger) works fine, but the plane pitches up when firing. Despite the tutorials telling you to use airbrakes, I find it better to leave them retracted (no argument will be entered into). It has been stated by a reputable member of these forums (link above) that the airbrakes are not used in real life for gun runs. BiPod. Origninal comment removed: I wrongly stated that PAC does not engage. Edited April 18, 2011 by BiPod Factual Error
Tord Hoppe Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 I might get 1 or 2 targets on a pass, but i pretty much have to be within very close range and sometimes i'm even shooting in a bank. Nothing wrong with "only" getting one (armored) target per pass. As has been stated, practise makes perfect. This suggestion is kind of hard to write, hope it makes some sort of sense. I suggest that you initially focus on building your references using the cockpit frame and such. Start you run further out with the target at about 10 o´clock. Imagine a line stretching from the gun pipper straight to the left and position the target on that line. Now make a level turn towards the target, always starting at the same distance from the target, and straighten out when the target is almost above/below the gun pipper. I´d be surprised if you got the pipper directly on target but we are building your references here ;) Notice where the target ended up. Straighten out sooner/later to get the target aligned vertically with the pipper. Try to use the same rate of roll at all times, don´t chase the target. Once you got your turn onto target down you´ve done the hard part. It is easy to adjust pitch to get the pipper on target, it´s far harder to change your flight path to align horisontally. Once you get the turn to target working, start changing the vertical position of the target higher/lower than the pipper in order to get it to end up as close as possible. Once you have a nice simple turn to target down you can build on that to be able to handle varying distances and profiles such as a more popup type of style. You´ll learn to "feel" the aircrafts, and thereby the pippers, trajectory as you try different combinations of pitch and bank.

I'm hoping to figure out how to save that view as a snapview.. I second this...Tweaking your axis curves is one of the best things you could do to increase your accuracy. Spend around half an hour tuning that and you should end up with nothing but smooth control input, none of this twitching that will make it seem as though your reticule and the target are both positive magnets. You may want to add a deadzone in also, if your control stick is a bit loose around the center. Sinky Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Have you figured that out? An instant zoom to Hud would be great for me. I've created a corrected HUD snap view for use with gun runs. Frostiken Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 There's been a few times where I've had a good approach with PAC on, and when I fire the aircraft VIOLENTLY pitches upwards... I can't find anything to conclusively dupe it, it seems to be rare and random, as if SAS just says 'lol not right now thx'. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
