acare84 Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Hi, 1. Steam version is not using Starforce DRM and only using Steam DRM, right? 2. Game updates will be released on Steam at the same time (day) like the non Steam builds? Also game is using autopatcher (client like) to update the game or updates will be released on Steam auto patcher? Thanks for the answers and I really thank you for releasing this awesome game on Steam too with IL2: Cliffs of Dover, I don't need to buy another sim game for next 2 years. :)

Witchking Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 It should work. WHat happen when you try to open Steam overlay ingame? The overlay doesn't work. Nothing opens. The game is the only thing running. :( WHISPR | Intel I7 5930K | Nvidia GTX980 4GB GDDR5 | 16GB DDR4 | Intel 730 series 512GB SSD | Thrustmaster WARTHOG | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR4 pro | |A-10C|BS2 |CA|P-51 MUSTANG|UH-1H HUEY|MI-8 MTV2 |FC3|F5E|M2000C|AJS-37|FW190|BF 109K|Mig21|A-10:SSC,EWC|L-39|NEVADA|

Arclight Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 correct :) Er no, I think it still uses the regular solution. As far as I know it is because Steam can't provide copy-protection/DRM for 64-bit applications. (copied form another board) Using Starforce or Steam for copy protection? I mean, might wanna mention that specifically. You know how people can respond when it comes to DRM. Good point, EDIT:- it is unchanged, because Steam does not have any 64bit compatible copy protection. Nate Coincidentally, the overlay may well not work with 64-bit either. overpro Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Er no, I think it still uses the regular solution. As far as I know it is because Steam can't provide copy-protection/DRM for 64-bit applications. (copied form another board) In my impression if steam release uses any 3rd party DRM like Starforce, then steam should mention "3rd party DRM: starforce" in the intro page, within the "Game details" section. but DCS A10-C is not the case: http://store.steampowered.com/app/61010/ But this game uses 3rd party DRM: Stalker - Clear sky : http://store.steampowered.com/app/20510/ overpro = I'm not good at Nintendo Mario and always get "Game over" pretty fast, so over~~pro
EtherealN Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Overpro, I suspect that this is just an oversight. I'll send a ping to the right people and see if they can check that. (It wouldn't be the first time something like that is missed by Steam - the original release of Stalker Clear Sky is an example of that, actually. When that was released Steam forgot to place that information there and it took a couple days for corrections to filter through to the right people at Valve.) Rahvin Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 There was definitely starforce when I installed it, much to my disgust. Oh well, 9 installs left I guess!
159th_Viper Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 ....Oh well, 9 installs left I guess! Guess again ;) Uninstalls and subsequent reinstalls do not trigger activations. Activations are triggered with Hardware changes which are further negated by deactivating prior to uninstalling/upgrading. Activations are further replenished automatically (Starforce Proactive). I hope they will remove the 3rd party DRM on Steam. Steam itself is a DRM and don't need 3rd party DRM's. 1C Maddox Games also removed the TAGES DRM from IL2: Cliffs of Dover on Steam. Finally Steam Overlay is not working with A-10 Warthog (we can't chat, we can't take screenshots and etc.) I hope you will tell that to devs too, thanks. :)

Apparently Steam does not provide any protection for 64bit applications like Warthog. Warthog needs it's own DRM. EtherealN Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 I hope they will remove the 3rd party DRM on Steam. Steam itself is a DRM and don't need 3rd party DRM's. Incorrect in this specific case. Steam does not have any protection measures that can work with 64-bit applications. For this reason, using the Steam application itself as protection was not an option. (It was used in this manner with DCS:Black Shark, but that application was 32-bit, DCS:A-10C is 64-bit.) Similarly, the reason Steam Overlay is not working, is the same thing: Steam and all it's components are 32-bit and have no provisions for 64-bit operation. The only thing that can fix both of the above is if Valve (finally) makes a 64-bit version of Steam. This is basically the same thing as what went on in the first part of the open beta and TrackIR - getting TrackIR to work was impossible in the main version (64-bit), because Naturalpoint did not yet have any 64-bit client software. Frostiken Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 I'm curious as to why ED uses Starforce given the immense negative stigma. In fact it seems Russian developers only now exclusively use Starforce as the rest of the industry gave it up long ago... why is that? Do you guys get some sort of tax incentive for using other Russian companies or something along those lines? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
EtherealN Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 All DRM solutions have "negative stigma" in some quarters. As for the reason why SF specifically was chose - I don't know. I do know that they were among the first to proivde a powerful solution that did not rely on any drivers, meaning that they were very early an attractive compromise between the company's need to protect it's property, and customer experience. But whether that is why it was chosen I wouldn't have the foggiest.
