Before startup I get power from the ground to power the radio to ask permissions to startup. Great, permission granted. So while the APU is spooling up I tell the chief to disconnect the ground power.

"Ground power is off"

Thanks chief.

So, startup, engines, CDU, etc, etc, 5 minutes of aligning + two minutes reviewing the DSMS profiles, etc, etc, request taxi to runway. Very good. So when I gently squeeze down the throttle, the chief calmly screams over the intercom "HEY!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!??"

First time I heard him say that I was so startled I actually hit eject. So after a quick brainstorm I thought that, hmm, maybe 5 minutes isn't enough for a ground crew to leave the ramp with a cable during a combat deployment. So I started it up again, this time leaving the game for 10 minutes for a cigarette and some 20q on my android phone  Bugger gets me every time.

"HEY!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!??" Not having learned from my previous encounter with The Chief, the volume was just as loud. This time my self control prevented me from ejecting as I slammed on the brakes and extended airbrakes. I looked around but couldn't see anything so I reluctantly continued on.

"HEY!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!??" Oh **** off. Surely starting two jet engines means I won't stick around for pancakes. I made it all the way to the start of the runway, stopped to ask permission to takeoff, and just as I was moving out to the runway...

"HEY!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!??" Did they follow me 3 kilometres from the ramp? Hope they don't have to carry the GPU by hand...

So, is anyone else not using the ground power?

LOL

Ok start up with ground power is unnecessary and dangerous in RL so I have been led to believe.

You can start your APU without asking for start up and then that gives power to the radio. Ask for permission after APU is started.

With regard to ground crew yelling they do that anyway unless you use the intercom on the left rear console- near the manual reversion switches or thats the theory:)

Ground power defineitly has a few bugs left to iron out. I still use it though, but I don't disconect untill both engines are ready to give me AC power. That way I can start my INS align and CICU etc. In the most efficent manner

Seems that the battery DC and inverter AC power is too classy for the radio and I'm pretty sure starting a gigantic turbine requires permission to startup. Startup meaning going from a cold aircraft to a warm aircraft.

I've used the ground power once. It saved me virtually no time, plus I like throwing switches ;) So I just use the APU for startup and shut it down as part of my final checklist before taxi. It would be helpful in the event, like in some FSX planes, if you stayed on the ramp battery power only doing checklists, taking a break or whatever, to have the ground power to start in the event of battery charge death.

Ah, thank you :)

And goodbye Chief. Lets hope I won't need anyth... HEY! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?

I think one of the crew chiefs mentioned that pilots don't have to ask to start even engines in the ordinary course.

Well that's base / MAJCOM directed as well. For F-15E maintenance runs you need clearance from MOC and they call the SPs, otherwise they swarm the jet and think you're stealing it (happened to me when they towed a jet without permission and I was in the cockpit... :D). Aside from that, you don't ask the tower for clearance. At Mountain Home IIRC the front-seater on MX runs would tell tower ground he started the jet, but in USAFE they don't.

Civil rules are:

-IFR - Request start up

-VFR - no need to request - inital contact with ATC is usually request for taxi

The main purpose of "getting started up" in civil aviation is to make sure, that ATC has a valid flightplan of your flight. You usually do that call with Delivery. If you just want to start an engine, lets say for maintenance, you usually call Ground.

As mentioned above, for VFR flight you don't ask for Start Up at all, because you're not required to have a flight plan.

Don't know the exact way it works in military flying though..

I've had this happen to me regularly when refueling.

Sometimes (mostly online), depending on the mission I tend to go for a custom loadout, and that means also that I'll usually avoid filling my fuel tanks completely. As such, when I'm on the ground, doing a ramp start, I kindly ask the Chief to rearm my plane and refuel it. Sure enough, the ground crew gets to it, and once they are done, I actually start up the bird, doing the usual procedure of turning on battery power and the radio, asking permission to turn on the engine, and then go through all the procedures to get my bird up and running.

And sure enough, five minutes later, after the EGI has finished aligning, I ask the tower permission to taxi, recieve it, slightly increase throttle enough to get my plane moving and then I always, inevitably hear the Chief yelling in my interphone "Hey, what are you doing?!".

It seems that every time they refuel you, they always forget to detach the hose. :glare:

The only way i found to prefent the whole "Hey, what are you doing." is to rearm after you refuel. and after you turn off your ground power. Not sure why but if you ask for rearm after them two items you will no longer get the "Hey what are you doing"

I get the same thing after requesting refuel and I never used ground power. I figured there was something else I was supposed to tell them to do after refuel but I never went back and looked at the communications options. I also got denied access to take off after I heard "What are you doing".

The chief yelling is a bug. Even if you turn off ground power and everything, he'll yell at you as you start to taxi. Don't know if it'll make the coming patch, but it's known anyway. It certainly shouldn't prevent you getting clearance. ATC bugginess is unrelated, as far as I can tell.
