Nu-NRG Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 So, what was your best / worst random failure? The other day I was doing some free flight when all of the sudden ... BOOOM! Half of my right wing was gone and my plane was in such a violent spin that I was unable to recover. Aviate - Navigate - Communicate
SmokeyTheLung Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 haven't seen that one yet...(well maybe once or twice:) but I'm pretty sure it was user error) I generally don't find much amusement in the "random" failures. Losing half a wing or an elevator or vertical stabilizer, now that's fun! I recently had a landing gear malfunction that forced me to land gear up, that was exciting System specifications: Computer, joystick, DCS world, Beer

Arclight Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 The HUD disapearing when I lined up the first gun run. Was looking forward to those after slaving up high... bloody failures. :P [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] DCS A-10C: putting the 'art' into 'warthog'. (yes, corny. Sorry.)

Sinky Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Wing's don't usually just break unless your severely overloading them so I don't think that was a failure. I usually only get CADC, GCAS and HUD failures. Believe it or not with birds set at 100% and probably over 150 hours of flying I've never had a bird strike. They used to be pretty common back in FC2. The birds are probably too scared of receiving a swift burst from the GAU. Chaz Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Bird strike just moments after getting airborne. Later that day- upon landing and rollout, my nosegear collapsed (I think I engaged nosewheel steering too soon, not 100% certain) and apparently the pieces of the nosewheel entered the left engine resulting in a failure/fire. Phuz Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 The most frustrating one I had was a CCIP pipper failure, no dmg taken all the way to target and now im dropping CBUs by 'feel'. Still got some kills, but not as many as I would have liked. I've also seen it throw me a random engine fire about 100 feet AGL after takeoff, which is kinda lame since the T-Handles don't light up yet and I had to use external view to see what was going on before I could properly handle the situation.
EtherealN Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 (edited) Not DCS:A-10C, but my favourite sudden failure was in a flight on the 104th server with my F-15C. Was doing a penetration flight to intercept the red AWACS, but since it was under S-300 cover I came screaming in at treetop level to mask myself long enough to get a shot. Just as I startet to rotate upwards to align for the shot one of my engines ingested a bird... DOH! I made the shot and started limping home, only to find a hostile F-15C in my way. So I found myself in the weird situation of turning offensive on an enemy fighter while only having one engine - but didn't get the kill due to only having heaters left (I launched mainly to get him to turn away long enough for me to run). He then chased me straight into a Tunguska. :( In A-10C, I think my favourite random event is when GGTharos accidently blew my wing off with a maverick back when we were famming with the plane. Saw me have to make an expedited landing with only one and a half wing. I was so surprised. :D (And that is, incidentally, also the moment when I fell in love with the flight model.) Sounds to me like you were just extremely unlucky that day. :joystick: The unlucky part of that "incident" was that I was at ccca 4000-5000 ft AGL. The weird thing that really struck me is that jet "locked". No matter what I did it did not respond. Oh and not only did my wing fell off, It was on fire. Maybe the ordnance went haywire :P Aviate - Navigate - Communicate

Helios Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Yesterday nose gear failed to retract after take-off. And it was a nice, smooth and pretty much text-book take-off, so writing this off as random failure. The interesting thing is the alarm sound was going on and on, but there were no warning lights to indicate what was wrong - nor any way to shut the alarm off. Nothing on warning light panel, master caution not lit up, all gear lights were off after retracting (and they were on before the event). The only other feedback was the plane was slower so had to be caused by either increased drag or loss of engine power. Ended up 'cheating' by looking at external view (glad this was enabled on the MP server). I guess in real life I would have had to do a fly-by of the control tower or something. Went around and landed just fine. Not sure why the gear lights were off, but there's a big button next to the throttle that says "L/G WRN SILENCE". [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
