Sappo Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 Just as an example ... to those that regard some of us as 'whiners' This is a screen-shot of the server listing as I saw it tonight 0220hrs, GMT -5 Let me break it down by server in case there is some mis-understanding about what I am trying to get across... 1: 1st VFW - Locked, 3/8 players, probably some internal training judging from the mission. 2: Realism Settings Open to ALL - Unlocked, empty... save for the 'server' itself 3: WH_Mouse - 3/14 players, Locked, no information about a website or password/ts in the info 4: Quirks Coop - Empty, unlocked... again save for the server bot 5: Trevors MP Test - 2/2, Locked, name says it all, a test server 6: Piloti Virtuali - Locked, 1/32 players, again looks like a private server for their purposes 7: Iron Angels Dedi - Unlocked, Empty 8: Panzertards - 2/8, Locked, testing purposes judging by the information So to sum it up... this is what I see when I come home from work (yes I realize this is off hours and not prime time) Yes I will probably be told I can simply sign-up for one of the squads and have access to their server, but when I come home from work all I want to do is hop into a server with some people from all-over the world and have a good mission. Maybe I am just frustrated, does anyone else see my issue? PS: Please do not take offense because your server is listed, I am not trying to call anyone out or anything of the sort. Just showing an example of what I am faced with when trying to play.
STP Dragon Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 @ Sappo: I'm 100% with you. But in this case why you don't host a mission with a unlock server by yourselfe? Everyone is able to do this. The missions are available in this forum. I think there are a lot of guys thinking like you and waiting for a puplic server. Yesterday I started a puplic server. Within 15min 3-4 guys joined the server, said "Hi" and was flying with me. 159th_Viper Posted June 7, 2011 Author Posted June 7, 2011 Much thanks for all the interest/comments/sentiments expressed. It seems as though certainly a majority of current and future server admins are willing. For the sake of reasonableness I will leave the thread be for another day in case a server admin/provider might have missed it. Thereafter a proposal to the powers-that-be for a MP sub-forum shall be submitted so that we can get the ball rolling. I'll keep you all informed. Ta all. MadTommy Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 (edited) Just as an example ... to those that regard some of us as 'whiners' .............Maybe I am just frustrated, does anyone else see my issue? I understand you disappointment in the MP scene, but what point are you trying to make? Is it: There are not enough people play at this time? As i can't see what else you could be saying, (except just venting, which i understand & sympathise with). There are open servers for you to join and there are private sessions going on. We can't 'make' people play MP so you can have someone to join and we certainly should not be trying to stop people having private sessions. So im at a loss of what you/we could do to change this. Unfortunately the issues are deep rooted as ED have always considered MP to be a minor part of the game. And this has meant the only way to get a good MP game is to at least be associated with a community or group. I'm not saying you should join one.. only that it really is the best way to consistently get a satisfying MP game. There are groups to suite all out there. Moa Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 @Viper: I run the stallturn server used for VNAO and a testbed for the 104th stats system (http://stallturn.com/104th/ but has 'global' stats from multiple squadrons). From time to time it gets flipped as an A-10C server but I intend commissioning a dedicated A-10C server within the next couple of months. In am interested in any discussion of multiplayer. Not only from a server maintainer point-of-view, but also as a third-party integrator point-of-view (eg. so that my multiplayer, multi-server pilot statistics system continues to work as DCS evolves). Also, thanks Viper for asking ...

VMFA117_Poko Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 (edited) I'd like to share my point of view about mp 'cuz I believe many users (not squad members) may have similar problems. I'm rather shy person and with irregular free time after work. If I have time to play I go online mp open servers only. My english is still far from perfect in speaking but no problem in understanding. I must admit joining TS stresses me a lot :(. Hell, I don't even like to speak in my native language on TS. No squad membership then for me and no pasaran on closed servers 'cuz silent person isn't wanted there even if behavior is by the book. However I think I could handle communicating in brevity code using keys (like in SP game) or via chat. Keys option would be much easier, quicker than writing in chat imho. Chat still would be needed in situations harder to explain. So a big wish is an internal communicator (like TeamSpeak with T.A.R.S.) - when someone with mic speaks, other persons on same frequency hear him. But persons not using mic can still communicate, construct brevity code sentences using Function Keys (something similar like is possible now but with more options - i.e. COPY, NEGATIVE commands). What do you think? Edited June 7, 2011 by Poko24
Heli Shed Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 I must admit joining TS stresses me a lot :(. Hell, I don't even like to speak in my native language on TS. No squad membership then for me and no pasaran on closed servers 'cuz silent person isn't wanted there even if behavior is by the book. Not so. Come on TS and be 'silent' if that is your preference. You will be able to hear what is going on and as you have said further in your post, a simple 'Roger' 'Copy' or 'understood' would suffice. Try writing in notepad a brief introduction and pasting it as soon as you arrive in the relevant TS channel. "Hi, my name is Poko24. Pretty shy person and speaking with strangers over TS stresses me a little. Please dont be offended if i dont contribute toward conversation or the Mission acknowledgements" Say that on the 74th Server and we would instantly respect that. Infact, we would say, "This pilot's got his S*** squared away!" Never say never! I'd also like to add that one of my own pilots in our vfs, was a fairly timid and shy man who barely said a word. Just 'being' around those that speak fairly easily with one another can psycologically break down some barriers and before you know it you are conversing without feeling the pressure to do so. With the right people around you, being on TS can have a huge impact on your confidence in real life. We can't shut him up now! :smilewink: Regards 'T' 1 Come pay us a visit on YouTube - search for HELI SHED
Shaman Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 (edited) I must admit joining TS stresses me a lot :( It is psychological I see. This kind of "anxiety" comes from within, kind of fear of communicating to complete strangers. We are living in big cities, and we just do not communicate with people. Notice how westerners avoid even eye contact (in train, bus, public square etc.)? However back on topic. This is different world, if you can't be yourself, make an experiment, change a nick on TS and play a new role. Join, say hello, say you will be here but only listening (aka "I speak no English"). It is like in RL aviation. Just same as pilots stay on local frequency, even that airspace class does not require to communicate with no one. It is good habit to listen to position reports and intentions of others. This helps you a lot to build situation awareness and new set of skill (radio coms). You will begin reporting own position and intentions shortly after... you'll see, that's even better habit :) Like with everything "The million mile journey takes one step at a time". I used to be fairly shy person myself. Now there are just days when I do not want to open my mouth at all, but that's different ;) cheers, Poko24 Edited June 7, 2011 by Shaman 51PVO Founding member (DEC2007-) 100KIAP Founding member (DEC2018-) :: Shaman aka [100☭] Shamansky tail# 44 or 444 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 100KIAP Regiment Early Warning & Control officer
MadTommy Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 So a big wish is an internal communicator (like TeamSpeak with T.A.R.S.) - when someone with mic speaks, other persons on same frequency hear him. But persons not using mic can still communicate, construct brevity code sentences using Function Keys (something similar like is possible now but with more options - i.e. COPY, NEGATIVE commands). What do you think? I agree, in-game communication is an area that needs MUCH love. Anything to improve it would help greatly in MP. i5-3570K @ 4.5 Ghz, Asus P8Z77-V, 8 GB DDR3, 1.5GB GTX 480 (EVGA, superclocked), SSD, 2 x 1680x1050, x-fi extreme music. S77th-konkussion Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 Nothing wrong with being on TS and not talking. At least you can follow what's happening. If the language is English, and you can communicate effectively enough on this forum- that TS server will be no problem. Like has been said- either say or type that English not native, or mic's broke , etc. [sIGPIC]http://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=43337&d=1287169113[/sIGPIC]

But persons not using mic can still communicate, construct brevity code sentences using Function Keys (something similar like is possible now but with more options - i.e. COPY, NEGATIVE commands). What do you think? Well I don't like speak either. Usually I don't say too much either in game or in RL. However from my experience at 104th TS, being there (on TS) really helps. Not only with better words pronunciation but you also see your own English is not so bad, when you hear team mates from Balkans or Latvia :] It was nice to listen people who speak this language for years, especially US based ones where American pronunciation it not so clear like true English citizens is. It familiarized me with it as well. In-built VoIP solution would solve many problems with joining TS, the question is not if it is going to be added to DCS. Question is when. Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D ಠ_ಠ ツ
VMFA117_Poko Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 (edited) Thanks all for understanding. That's good to know. I feel it's not just about me :D. Yes Shaman - you're 100% right - it is psychological. Playing in virtual world is a 'lil bit like hiding under a hood - and I want to keep that way. People are different and some just don't want to take it too seriously. Same time multiplayer flight is just amazing. Just prefer not using verbal conversation there... Hard to explain why exacly... Voice and the way I speak is my personal private appearance (?). Different nickname won't help here either. Great to know that still such silent persons are welcome on TS servers. I always thought I would be only new user not knowing anyone there. This is a psychological barrier like stepping into new classroom mates group after changing a school ;). If it's ok to keep my mouth shut I will join then. But remember! Not every new DCS user will read this thread. Still I think joining TS is not a straight forward operation. Need is to shortcut the way in this matter. Giving no choice should also help with "new classroom effect". You should be able to hear others in MP on same frequency by default even if you don't want to use TS. You'd like to mute some noobs and fly with mate only in two-ship formation flight on open server? Just switch on different channel. And how great would be the possibility communicating others via commands generator (comm menu) - new users would look less noobish using proper brevity code. In-built VoIP is hardly needed. We all agree. Combo with SP communication way would be a bless. Edited June 7, 2011 by Poko24
