WildBillKelsoe Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 Hi, Playing the stock mission "Shooting Range", while on site, wingman shouts Winchester. Is that a code for friendly fire? He're is the track. Be Ultra patient when viewing as the chump clipped my tail on RTB when my fuel was under 2. http://www.mediafire.com/file/ph0tvp849fbgb5w/moron.trk Also note my way of designating targets for data link. WildBillKelsoe Posted June 26, 2011 Author Posted June 26, 2011 Ok. p. 14-31. Sorry. But what about my mission. Shkval cant designate blue targets for shit!!! I mean I press the NAV TGT on Nav panel, press 1, unlock shval point and lock, press uncage again on locked target, yet coordinates are weird and the HSI shows target elsewhere, not with my LOS. Any ideas? BTW. I'm downloading patch 1.0.1.c and 1.0.2 for BS. Hopefully I can still play on my laptop later. ZQuickSilverZ Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 (edited) FUN FACT. I actually E-Mailed the military (the US airforce) and asked them when and where winchester originated. They actually answered me back stating they had tried to research it and had even contacted a museum. The answer was We don't know. My guess is some pilot was using slang (all the cool kids are doing it) and it just stuck. Edited June 27, 2011 by ZQuickSilverZ I need, I need, I need... What about my wants? QuickSilver original. People sat down and dreamed up a bunch of them to streamline military comms: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brevity_code [SIGPIC]http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/2500/a10161sqnsignitureedite.png[/SIGPIC]
EtherealN Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Kaiza, that's not what he was talking about. :P He was talking about "why did they 'dream up' that specific one for that specific meaning"? Most likely just because it was already in use somewhere, somehow, for something with a similar function - but in a more colloquial sense. But no-one took note of the origin. 104th_Crunch Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 My guess is it comes from a Winchester rifle. When you have no bullets, all you'd have left is your Winchester. Just a stab in the dark lol.

OK probably should have expanded. I don't think it would have originated from slang, ops brevity codewords follow a pattern so they are easy to remember. Codewords that are used to described launching and ordnance states are commonly gun related or gun types: e.g: shotgun, rifle, magnum, sniper, shooter. I reckon that Winchester is just another name dreamed up by the doctrine nerds that fits the ordnance theme (because its a common ammunition type). EtherealN Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 I reckon that Winchester is just another name dreamed up by the doctrine nerds that fits the ordnance theme (because its a common ammunition type). I see your point, though Winchester isn't just an ammunition type - it's a rifle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winchester_Repeating_Arms_Company http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winchester_rifle My personal guess on a possible rationale for it's use would be that if you are operating a cannon, machinegun (gatling or otherwise) etcetera and run out of ordnance, you'd be "winchester" in the sense that you are now a rifleman. In the case of an A-10, once you're out of ordnance you are a "rifleman" in that you only have your gun left; you've "picked up your winchester". That's just a guess though. As you say, it might just be a commitee decision with no real meaning. ZQuickSilverZ Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 (edited) You know Crunch I have heard stories about WW1 pilots using firearms to shoot at enemy aircraft at close range (imagine what a shotgun would do to a wood and canvas world war one plane). I think perhaps your closer than you know. I think at one time a pilot ran out of aircraft ordinances and resorted to using a firearm manufactured by winchester (an act of desperation) and this is where the term started. http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-hand-ejectors-1896-1961/160796-world-war-one-pilot-handguns-2.html "In the early days, before planes mounted MGs, the pilots would take potshots at each other with their pistols. Later it was mainly there to shoot yourself as opposed to a crash or burning. The Allies didn't issue parachutes, thinking that someone would panic and waste a perfectly good plane by bailing out. The Luftwaffe did begin offering pilots the option of a parachute. Balloon crews always had parachutes. They'd also have rifles in addition to pistols. Shotguns and the MP18 were also taken up in the air. " and also this "Had a Great uncle fought in the great war in France. He didnt wait for the U.S. to go to war, we are German, and there were old scorse to settle. He flew for the French and very early on he said he sawed down the barrel of a leveraction .45-70. Said he could steady it better than a revolver. He said he could kill a german plane as easy as you could kill a buffalo. I was a bug eyed kid listening to a old man when i heard this. Dont know if it true, but I never found out it wasnt." Note this is not where I origionally heard of this. I only posted it to show how widespread this rumor is. I heard this explanation as well. The military used two rifle brands, winchester and one other I cannot remmember. These rifles had incompatible bullets, so when you ran out of ammo during the firefight, you called your brand, so the runner knew which bullets to get. Eventualy winchester became dominant in the military, so everybody yelled wincherster when they were out of ammo. The Valley A-10C Version Revanche for FC 3

Kifter Posted July 2, 2011 Posted July 2, 2011 I maybe wrong as I'm no gun expert but my dad told me that ye olde Winchesters used pistol ammunition even though ofcourse they're a rifle. So in relating that to aircraft I believe you call "Winchester" when you've got ammo but not the right type for the job. E.g. "this is lead, hey wingman go attack that SAM site" You reply "no way, I've got guns but no stand off missiles, that thing would murder me, I'm Winchester."
