bogusheadbox Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 Just reading in August's edition of pilot a nice article on the F15 Of particular note it mentions air to air kill ratios throught the 15's lifespan. Here is the ballsy part...... An f15 strike eagle (not used for air to air) scored an air to air kill on an Iraqi Mi-8 (helicopter) using a laser guided bomb ! Now that's a ballsy decision by the pilot and possibly slight overkill on the amount of explosives needed to bring down the chopper. Does not mention if it was a direct hit or due to explosion radius.... So to keep this on toipic, anyone tried using laser bombs on slow moving aerial targets?
Eddie Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 So to keep this on toipic, anyone tried using laser bombs on slow moving aerial targets? Oh yes, GBU-12s are very effective at making KA-50s go away. :D
159th_Viper Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 (edited) The F15E kill was against a Mi-24 and not a Mi-8: Dropped a GBU-10 on a Mi-24. Visual accounts from the pilots involved, Captains Bennett and Bakke stated that the Gunship was "Vaporized". The Mi-8 kill was on 11/02/2001 by F15C's (79-0048 and 80-0012) who killed the Helicopter with Aim-7 Sparrows. Both pilots fired on the Helo and a half-kill was awarded to each as they could not confirm which F15 actually scored the kill. Nu-NRG Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 Okey. One would figure that when it gets an L symbol on the RWR to be painted by a ground vehicle and not seconds away from beeing hit by laser guided bomb. :megalol: Aviate - Navigate - Communicate

JaseGill Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 It was Gulf War 1. 1991. F15E dropped a GBU (cant remember which one) took out a helo (cant remember which on). Read William Smallwoods book (Strike Eagle: Flying the F15E in the Gulf), its in there. Try his Warthog Book too, that's very good and has been recommended reading here for a while. andyfoot Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 I've used GBU's on targets that started stationary, then decided to move off after weapons release. They were successfully tracked and destroyed, much to my surprise.

GGTharos Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 There was nothing ballsy about it. The helicopter was landed, on the ground, until moments before the bomb hit.
