As you say, there's lots to learn, so learning how to use the MFCDs I don't think makes much sense. Learn how to use the different things that can be displayed on them, i.e. TAD, DSMS, TGP, etc. Any decent discussion of navigation should include the TAD, for example. The MFCDs themselves are pretty simple.

You don't manually release individual countermeasures, instead the system is designed to run 'programs', i.e. predefined sequences of chaff/flare ejection. You can execute the currently selected program by using the 'HOTAS CMS FWD (aka UP) SHORT', and stop it prematurely using 'HOTAS CMS BACK (aka DOWN) SHORT'. But, I'd suggest reading about the CMS to properly understand its workings and how to program the sequences (if you so desire).

HI nomdeplume,

thank you very much for enlighten me. Your answer regarding the Chaff/Flare release helped me very much. I have some vids how to program them but didnt know releasing them was done "automatically".

I "played" a little bit with the TADS, thats ok but the MFCDs navigation menue is a bit confusing. I think i will make a ramp start up and try to understand how to move forward, backwards etc.

Thank you buddy.

The MFCDs have a pretty flat structure. Any depth is dependent on which page they're displaying, but again you should read about the specific system for information on how to use it.

In terms of general navigation, the only thing is the buttons along the bottom which allow you to select which page to display. You can hold one of them down to get to another page you can use to select what you want to have available on each MFCD. Aside from that, all you can really do is cycle between pages using the HOTAS 'coolie hat', or go directly to a page by pressing its corresponding button along the bottom row.

Within each page you have different options, and there's some consistency in the symbology used, but otherwise it's really up to the individual components to provide their own 'navigation'. Most commonly the pages will have one or two sub pages for setting options, usually not nested, and they'll have a "RET" option at the top left to return to the previous page. e.g. the targeting pod's CTRL page has that.

However overall - the system is designed to be concise and let the pilot access what they need quickly, however it's not designed to be intuitive or guide the pilot. That's what the months and months of training is for. So the options available won't make any sense until you actually understand the system involved. Once you do, the MFCDs are really very simple interfaces.

Have you played through the training missions?

I want to learn how to navigate

As a newbie myself, I did find some online video tutorials very informative.

I'd suggest watching this one first:

http://youtu.be/ZbMBBYCIqvQ

The go to

http://dcswiki.com/index.php?title=DCS:_A-10C_Tutorial_Collection

and watch all the "Navigation System Tutorials". Especially ones by Fish and BBQ.

And download the airfield diagrams as well, so that you know the runway headings and numbers and Tacan and ILS frequencies!

http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=60370DCS

http://www.virtual-jabog32.de/index.php?section=downloads&subcat=37&file=1200

Watch the tutorials, learn. And try all the stuff these guys showed you. I suggest the radio tutorials too, so you can professionally contact the tower before takeoff and landing.

One more thing, about the ILS: ILS steering bars don't quite work as they should at the moment. Maybe they'll be fixed in the future. See this thread:

http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=70045

Actually, I couldn't even imagine how exciting it is to navigate in the middle of the night. See the stars with night vision goggles, Tacan and ILS morse codes as a sweet background music, dimly lit instrument panels glowing, engines running smoothly. Wow! Almost jettisoned all my weapons... :D

You cannot move backwards on the ground, if that's what you are trying to do.

You clearly haven't played with the ground saftey override switch :)

You'll learn a great deal just by reading the forums lots of great people here who are a huge resource.

This sim takes time it is after all a study sim with more depth then anything else out there Major thumbs up to the Dev's! and to the community who has made learning this monster fun to do.

Take your time you'll not pick it all up in a day

Hi to all who "cares" about me.

My problem now is, that i am going through the Navigation training. It hard to understand. Thats why i want to learn about the MFCDs for navigation.

Maybe its a bad thought, but i am stucked. Its complex. From the training vids i learned the start up procedure and now i can master it. Take off is going well, even landing is going quite well. But first i want to master Navigation training. Thats why i was"crying" for help.

CHEERS and a BIG Thanks.

LcSummers,

If you need some help, it'd 'help us to help you' if you were a bit more specific with what you need help with. There are a lot of systems on the Hog, and it'd be both difficult for anyone to explain all of them to you on the forums and of no help to you either.

One thing I will say is this, it sounds to me like you're thinking of the MFCDs as a system, which they are not. The MFCDs are just displays which are used to display information from various systems.

To think of it another way, if you get a new PC you don't ask someone how to use the monitor do you? No, you ask how do you use Word, or internet explorer or another specific program. That's how you need to think when it comes to the MFCDs, they are monitors.

What you need to learn is how to use the CDU first IMHO, don't worry about all the stuff deep in the menus just learn the basics such as what the main screens tell you, how to add a waypoint and how to create a flightplan etc. Once you've got the CDU down, the CDU repeater (on the MFCDs) is easy it's just the same stuff on a screen in front of you.

With the CDU mastered, move on to the TAD and STATus pages. Once you know those, you will have learnt all the "flying" systems of the Hog and can move on to the weapons side of the aircraft.

One thing I say to everyone is that if you learn to FLY the Hog first, you'll find learning to fight it much easier than you would if you tried to learn to both at the same time.

Now if you have a specific question about the CDU etc, post it and we will do our best to give you a more detailed and less general answer.

Hi Eddie,

thank you so much giving me a roadmap.

As i said, i am learning to master navigation training but i think you noticed i am not a native speaker. This is one point that makes me a bit disoriantated especially concerning navigation /cdu and mfcd.

I will follow your suggestion, about the cdu.

BTW i am not a hottrigger, i am not interested at the moment of weapon deployment. I want to learn flying this beauty. This is and was my intention. I mentioned, i have really mastered the start up procedure. Real enjoyment for me now.

Setting Nav points is one of my probs at the moment. Too much information. I have to be more patient.

Thanks and cheers

PS: Do you know wich is the `"snap view "key for the LASTE control panel. Its hard to see EAc and Radaraltm switch?

The CDU is probably the hardest part of this beast! Once you know how to do a few basic things in that system, it's all downhill from there (except for maybe trying to not getting shot up by those pesky BMP-2's).

Dunno about the snap views sorry, I use trackIR myself.

SPECS: Intel Core i5 760 @ 3.2 Ghz +turboboost enabled, 12 GB DDR3 1600 @ 1500 Mhz, ATI Radeon 5850, TrackIR 5, X52 Pro and Saitek pedals

PS: Do you know wich is the `"snap view "key for the LASTE control panel. Its hard to see EAc and Radaraltm switch?

Try to press and hold this key combination:

Num0 + Num1

Note that if your throttle is in idle position, you won't be able to see the EAC and Radar Altimeter switches anyway. If you hover your mouse over where you expect them to see, you can see the cursor changes shape and you can click them "through" throttle.
