GRoss Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Hi everybody! Still trying to make up my mind on whether to by the HOTAS or not... What I'm worried about the most if the resistance of the throttle - since I cannot bolt it down to the table, it must be gentle enough to be usable (without any extra downforce) in a non-bolted-down state.. Any advice/feedback on that? The 2nd point is the durability - it has been mentioned in a few reviews, that the plastic buttons, etc seem quite fragile and non-durable. That is worrying, since the HOTAS costs around $500 as you know.. I've currently got a Logitech 3d extreme pro - it is my first ever joystick and I've had it for around 6 years now with no issues at all. Would I be correct to assume that the warthog hotas would be more durable than it? Thanks! :):joystick:
MTFDarkEagle Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Hi! You're going to have to post links to those reviews because I'm going to have to whoop those reviewers ass as they don't know what they are dealing with! The WH throttle is solid! As well as the buttons! Granted the pinky switch (for the external lights) is a bit on the weak side, but after some thinking you could come to the conclusion that that was by design. This HOTAS is awsome, and durable! You will not regret it! Seriously! Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
MTFDarkEagle Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 Ah! Off course to answer your first question: The resistance of the throttles can be adjusted very easily. However: if you just have it sitting on your desk and have it at it's firmist (spelling check please?) setting, it'll still not move anywhere. It's just plain heavy. Any advice/feedback on that? The throttle is perfectly stable and can be operated without being bolted down. The only problem is the afterburner detent. When it is used, the throttle tends to slide around once you lift the grip to get it over the detent. Apart from that, it is a pleasure to use. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
MTFDarkEagle Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 ^ yes that. I didn't mention it as I never use the afterburner detent.. Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
hassata Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 Keep in mind you can take out the detent to more accurately replicate the A-10's controls. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Ragtop Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 Agreed, the throttle is a real lump, it's not going anywhere! As far as the switches go, I have absolutely zero concern that they are going to fail on me. I've seen a few people complain things like "The flaps switch twists around, how can that happen on a $500 HOTAS?!" Look at the real thing, the Flaps switch twists. This thing is TOUGH. They're definitely not going to fail on you. 476th vFG Alumni
cichlidfan Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 Keep in mind you can take out the detent to more accurately replicate the A-10's controls. The same issue still exists with the idle detent, but then you don't use that very often. GRoss Posted October 8, 2011 Author Posted October 8, 2011 Thanks so much for your replies guys! :D Sorry didn't reply for a while - ..damn work... 1 last question - the afterburner detent - what is it for? I'm not really sure... I know that a-10c doesnt have afterburner (lol), but what happens if I fly fighters - do I have to move the throttle past the afterburner detent to get the afterburner?
EtherealN Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 Exactly, you move the detent such that instead of being at the bottom for on/off, it's at the top such that you can got MIL power by just pushing forward and have a clear feel for where the AB kicks in. GRoss Posted October 8, 2011 Author Posted October 8, 2011 Oh alright, awesome! Thanks!! I think I'll have to get it afterall :P :D
EtherealN Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 The only drawback is that there's actual physical intervention on the stick necessary - it's delivered with a tool (standard tool, I don't recall the english name for it though) which lets you "flip" the holder for the throttles. cichlidfan Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 EtherealN is refering to an Allen wrench or hex key. There is a plate between the two throttles that is held in with two screws, requiring the tool, the detent stop is reversed (or removed I guess) and the plate is replaced. Looks like it only takes a minute but I have, as yet, not done it myself. Did anyone mention what an awesome bit of hardware it is?:D ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, i7-6700K, Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, Crucial 32GB DDR4 2133, Samsung 950 Pro NVMe 256GB, Samsung EVO 250GB & 500GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Black, Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! G00dnight Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 you can just push ffrom off to idle you dont have to lift:thumbup:, also i have trimmed my reheat detent so i just push up to it for 100% mil power:joystick: and push harder to slide up to reheat:D, as a plus when in A10 the 100% power state is about 90% engine nice cruisin..:pilotfly: AMD A8-5600K @ 4GHz, Radeon 7970 6Gig, 16 Gig Ram, Win 10 , 250 gig SSD, 40" Screen + 22 inch below, Track Ir, TMWH, Saitek combat pedals & a loose nut behind the stick

If you don't tighten the screws with the allen key, you don't need it to loosen them. The screws are deliberately of the knurled head type, so you can operate them by hand. No allen key necessary. Depth Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 How to tinker with the afterburner detent is in the manual that comes with the HOTAS. Mine came without the detent installed for afterburner so it was pretty much a perfect plug-and-play device (all the controls in DCS were already mapped apart from the trim hat switch). sobek Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 After a bunch of years working industrial machinery, not tightening screws is an entirely foreign concept for me. :P But you should be familiar with the concept of tightening them with a set torque, in this case, as much as your bare fingers can handle. It will always guarantee you that the reverse operation is possible. :) Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
