bluepilot76 Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Can anyone reccomend a good countermeasures number for beating the SAMs, that will work in most scenarios? According to a book... UK Army Air Core pilots flying AH64D in Afghanistan just set it to automatic and it sent out complex arrays of decoys. Much better to let it work automatically than try and do it yourself apparently. With SAM incoming we dont have time to change the sequences etc so does everyone just use a standard number that will give you a best chance 90% of the time? WHat is that golden number? I been trying 512, both sides, but still getting hit if not a bit lucky. Hills seem to be the best defence... MeerCaT Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Funnily enough 512 is my favourite too! We can be countermeasures brothers. (...I don't know what that means. But it probably results in you buying me cake) However, I have recently learnt that, for reasons best known to Kamov, they decided to implement the value 5 in this context as 12! (and 7 as 15) [http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=82577] Looks like someone in the countermeasures dispenser software development team at Kamov got himself a new random number generator for his birthday! No seriously, there's a fairly reasonable reason behind it. Just a shame they chose the very number I wish to use as the one to represent a more popular (...apparently) value.
bluepilot76 Posted December 5, 2011 Author Posted December 5, 2011 Aye that will be why I ran out of flares in about 2 minutes earlier. Luckily FARP was nearby and the blokes on the ground hadnt started there tea break so were able to load up some more pretty quick. Good bunch. 512 is easy to remember because its what my Atari was packing. Quite a punch. Technical Specs: Asus G73JW gaming laptop... i7-740QM 1.73GHz ... GTX460m 1.5GB ... 8GB DDR5 RAM ... MeerCaT Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Yes siree bob! You have to keep those land-lubbers happy - you wouldn't want to get them upset and have them load you up with potato tubes instead of Vihkrs. Or as they once did to: a missle tube that fires out a little flag on a pole that reads "BANG!". Oh how I laughed during the subsequent evasive manouvres. 512kb!! You were living the dream my fellow! My Amstrad CPC 464 (green screen) couldn't give me any more than a beastly 64kb. (Begs the question what the leading '4' was all about in the model number - here you are dreaming of the dizzy heights of 464kb only to be left dangling in the breeze with a mere 64kb) Too much tagent?
bluepilot76 Posted December 5, 2011 Author Posted December 5, 2011 Too much tagent? Nah, if noone wants to share their CM secrets we might as well have a my computer was crapper than yours discussion. The Atari was the mother ship. Prior to that it was ZX Spectrum (16k?) and prior to that an ACORN ELECTRON. Chucky Egg!. No computer program has ever been so much fun. MeerCaT Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Don't talk to me about that damned egg! Stupid-headed, rolly-polly-loving idot of an embryo. What a blast! Who doesn't love a bit of chucky? The only computer software I have ever encountered more fun than the eggster was the Kamov Countermeasures Dispenser system. I do love random numbers. I can sit for hours clicking those big 80's buttons wondering to myself: "ooh what arbitrary number of flares that has no logical meaning or reference to anything else will I get this 3-digit combination?" Jet Set Willy!
bluepilot76 Posted December 5, 2011 Author Posted December 5, 2011 Going to try 666. Maybe it opens a cheat into a parallel underworld. Bandits at 3-o-clock. Never has coverart lied so convincingly to a 5 year old boy. So dissapointed. Expect RoF, get sprites. Technical Specs: Asus G73JW gaming laptop... i7-740QM 1.73GHz ... MeerCaT Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Excellent number. The Kamov random number generator couldn't have produced a better one! But more importantly, what was (is) your favourite retro game?
bluepilot76 Posted December 5, 2011 Author Posted December 5, 2011 343 sounds good. Both sides? Does it do the business? What about chuckyegg. What about falling off the elevator. Was it more dissapointing to, 1) miss the jump onto the elevator, or 2) get shot by a SAM after 2.5 hours hiding behind a ridge and just getting the tiniest bit too cocky and having a little peak over the top for 0.5 seconds? Sov13t Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I use 442, this is the same as the on-demand (button on the throttle) dispenser on the SU-25. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 51st PVO Regiment | Forum | Statistics DCS: MiG-21Bis
MeerCaT Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 12 flares in one complete sequence seems like a lot. That only lets you repeat it 10 times before needing a reload, and either you are much better at staying out of range of that pesky SAM guy, or you enjoy repeating the back and forth trip between frontline and base 14.5 times per mission. (The 0.5 is from when you get halfway back to the frontline before remembering you left the bath running in a hope that the enemy would decide to make love not war and you can knock off early for the day with a nice hot bath and a white russian on the rocks (cream, not milk))

Don't forget you're flying an aircraft that can't defeat a SAM by outrunning or in most cases out turning it. The only options you have are either getting out of its LOS or filling the sky with flares in the hope of defeating it. If you use all your flares defeating one missile, that's fine, you defeated it and lived to fight another day. I can tell you for a fact IRL pilots aren't worried about saving countermeasures when they have a SAM inbound.
MeerCaT Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 pilots aren't worried about saving countermeasures when they have a SAM inbound. Well now, in the current financial climate do we not think that kind of wanton disregard of resources is a touch irresponsible, no? But no, you have a fair point. You can't take them with you to the 'better place' I guess. A SAM in the hand is worth two flares in the bush. Or something.
Sov13t Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Indeed, I would much rather make a trip back to the base than have to deal with another loss. This is a combat simulator not an economic simulator... but even if it was - a loss of an airframe and/or the pilot is $$$ compared to $ of flares. Hell, they dispense flares at airshows. :) Also, have to consider that if you are lucky enough to notice a launch, most likely it will not be just one. So I try to create a cloud of flares, nose up - 180 - convert altitude for speed... and run to cover. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 51st PVO Regiment | Forum | Statistics DCS: MiG-21Bis
Suchacz Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I use 221 or 222. Sometimes continuous 013, but I always forget to turn it off:smartass: Per aspera ad astra! Jona33 Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 (edited) 821 is my favorite. Always used it on the Deployment mission. Works well on most enemies I find. Also you hit the dispense button. Get to 1m AGL and turn around, run and never need to click again. Edited December 5, 2011 by Jona33 Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing
bluepilot76 Posted December 5, 2011 Author Posted December 5, 2011 I was thinking too many in a long row might sort of let the missile follow you, like jerry following a line of chocolate chips into Toms mouth. 442, I sense some support for that. Create a sudden ball of colour and dissapear out the side quick smart? 2 flares from one side, wait one second, two more flares. I'll make a track. Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

Spetz Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I use 542 (usually) and always select the side that the enemy is more likely to engage from. The problem with SAM's is that besides the older 7 series of MANPADs (or HN 5) which are very easily spoofed, even by turning your exhaust away from the threat, the newer generation are very good at flare rejection, have great PN, very high Latex values and are capable of tracking the heat generated by friction on nearly all surfaces. Some the the new systems, through their PN programming, will actually, at the last millisecond before explosion, alter course to enter the cockpit area of the aircraft, exploding within. Luckily DCS hasn't modelled these, and if so, not very well, so I think (IMHO) it's more of a crap shoot with the flares then anything else. Maybe something like this >> # of flares X # of msl / distance to target = % probability of kill
Eddie Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Well now, in the current financial climate do we not think that kind of wanton disregard of resources is a touch irresponsible, no? Absolutely not! I have to say I really don't understand comments like this that keep popping up on these forums. Next people should be saying pilots shouldn't use reheat because fuel is too expensive. Those of us in the military quite frankly couldnt care less how much the equipment, weapons, ammunition etc cost. Everything has a purpose and is used for that purpose. Lives are always more important than money. 1
bluepilot76 Posted December 5, 2011 Author Posted December 5, 2011 Eddie, I suspect, like my brakes comment the other day, it was somewhat "tongue in cheek" Spetz. That sounds good. What is PN? What is Latex values? (genuine question). Technical Specs: Asus G73JW gaming laptop... i7-740QM 1.73GHz ... GTX460m 1.5GB ... 8GB DDR5 RAM ... Win7 64 ... TIR5 ... Thrustmaster T16000m
