i have no clue what the mayan date means, and yes it runs out that above date.. speculation. atm as to what this entails?

Heh...

My read of this is the same as with "cold fusion" and such things: when your discoveries are presented for press dissemination and not peer review, you are almost always dodgy.

Basically, the Mexicans are looking at making some money off of the golden tourism opportunity that has been created by this mayan calendar bull. :)

That is , if the Mayan prophecy is correct and comes out?

There is no mayan prophecy any more than our calendar predicts that the world ends on December 31st, or that the world didn't exist before 1AD. There is, however, a lot of woo woo with people making tonnes of money selling books and movies off of the claim that the mayans were predicting the end of the world and whatnot. :)

Hahah, yeah asparagin, if they really have something important to share, they sure are selecting the silliest way possible to present it - while ensuring that they look like sensationalists looking to drum up some hype for their tourism industry. :D

diveplane, not the first time "artefacts" like that get discovered, yet interestingly enough those discovered always end up matching whichever culturally dominant norm of how UFO's are expected to look. Apparently the visitations that happend in pre-history were such that their discovery always matches the prevailing pulp fiction of the time of discovery...

...so yeah, sorry for being more than a little bit skeptical. ;)

Pft. On 21/12/12 the long count mayan calendar will enter a new baktun, to the date 13.0.0.0.0. This is no different to our calendar entering a new century or millennium. What's causing all the uproar is that the previous world supposedly lasted for exactly 13 baktun.

Date 0.0.0.0.0 would be the creation of this world according to mayan mythology, and corresponds to 11 August 3114 BC. Mankind was herding cattle and pigs at around 8000 BC so it's fair to assume that the world has been around for longer than 13 baktun.

All wrong. The world was ending on new years eve 2011, i e in only a few days from now! Another calendar was found which ended already by the end of this year.

Fortunately, I was able to avert this impending disaster and save the world by ordering new pages from the manufacturer. You all should probably worship me, or at least send gifts or something...

Gentlemen, I think the main theme "Maya civilization" origins /development/ disappearance, continues today much talk and can generate different views, some very creative indeed taken out of context (foundation stone for the interpretation of archaeological findings).

Many people take advantage of theoretical and practical vacuum that exists, to give rise to new theories and ipotecis.

My recommendation is to do more science instead of Scientology

There are some very good points in that series, they are just trying too hard and it kind of falls flat. A lot of the myths they take out of context, especially the Hindu ones, for example replacing a description of lightning with it being a UFO.

Ancient civilizations did not understand lightning, the moon, stars, volcanoes or other natural disasters and phenomenon as we do, and attributed them to being gods or acts of god. These guys take all of that out of context because if you look at this specific rock it might look like an aircraft carrier from the right angle.

This is not entirely accurate.

This is the NASA reports a new discovery.

This is the report of the Sumerians, written in cuneiform clay using a table.

The key to understanding is in the context.

But this information today gives us much to talk and are still investigating, but we can not deny that ancient man did not have a rough KNOWLEDGE of their natural world, do not forget that one of the great achievements of mankind was agriculture and this not have happened without the prior knowledge of the seasons and its relation to the stars.

Regards.

Errr, Manfrez01, are you through that juxtaposition seriously suggesting that, based on that silly little tablet thing, the sumerians knew the location and position of Eris? I've seen that specific inscription used to make that claim, and I'm sorry, but it only serves to make me want to laugh and cry at the same time - laugh because it's hilarious, cry because people believe that crap and make the scam artists writing books on it rich... :P

But yes, ancient cultures had a fairly good observational understanding of nature. They knew how to use stars to figure out which day it was. They didn't have the first clue that the stars and the sun were actually the same type of object, though, they didn't have any concept that planets were world (or indeed that the Earth was a planet) - because they didn't need to have these concepts to figure out when to plant crops, when to harvest, and when to sacrifice some virgins to the gods to make sure said harvest goes well...

...yet some people happily suggest, based pretty much solely on an overactive imagination, that these civilizations observed tiny dots of light that only the invention of our best and biggest 100-million dollar observatories with computer automation and adaptive optics allowed us to find; in spite of said ancient cultures not leaving any evidence of ever making a basic lense. (Indeed, in the case of the Mayans, they barely had metalworking to speak of, with obsidian being the favourite type of blade, and only limited implementations of copper.) I mean, for goodness sake - we still have several of their "observatories" intact: they're composed of lines of stone slabs set up to line up with a given constellation (or the sun) on a given day. Now that's the type of instrument they are supposed to have found magnitude 18.7 objects? :D (Or well, same Sumerian tablet is often used for Planet X and Nibiru, not Eris, as well, and that one's even more funny. I love how anyone making that connection can immediately be identified as being clueless on orbital mechanics, because they have obviously not solved for the requisite orbit. Actual scientists have, and there's nothing there. If there was, you'd see it with a normal binocular right now.)

This is just another scam where some people are making rediculous amounts of money selling books, movies and TV shows.
