Tailgate Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Sorry if this question has been asked before , used the search and couldn't find anything specific. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but from my estimation, the Tanker only turns on its Nav lights at around 500 ft. This is fine during the day, but I find it almost impossible to visually acquire the Tanker at night. The light strip is not visible until you're on its six, goggles are no help against the star background. Tacan can get me close, within a mile, but that's not close enough to see it. I'm sure that with precise nav cues I could fly it up its ass, but I don't believe the Tacan is that accurate. Is this how it's done in RW? To me,it seems that nighttime ops would require different procedures, perhaps lights on at 1 or 2 miles out? 1

Tailgate Posted January 13, 2012 Author Posted January 13, 2012 Maybe I'll try locking him up with the TGP in AA mode and setting SPI, if I can find him first.
Depth Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Use the night vision goggles, Right shift + H by default I believe. You might also want to set the HUD to night mode by means of the little switch underneath the TGP arm and Lase arm switches 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Inseckt Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 (edited) If I am using NVG's, I find that it is best to leave the HUD in day-mode, since the night-mode tends to appear more "smeared". Only based on how it appears in-game, I believe that night-mode is only used when flying without NVG's. (I [could] guess it's because NVG's don't amplify the green frequency as much as others...) On-topic: Using TACAN and NVG's is a successful approach for me, if you are close enough and at correct altitude, the tanker should be quite luminous and easy to pick up from the background. (tip: fly slightly lower than tanker altitude, as it is usually harder to spot from above than below) Edited January 13, 2012 by Inseckt 1 Help Beczl with his DCS MiG-21Bis project by Pre-Ordering DCS MiG-21Bis module NOW! sobek Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 If I am using NVG's, I find that it is best to leave the HUD in day-mode, since the night-mode tends to appear more "smeared". That is because the NVG is oversaturated by the light from the HUD. Easy remedied by turning down the HUD brightness. 1 Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Snoopy Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 FYI, night mode for the HUD was really more used in the days before NVGs. v303d Fighter Group Discord | Virtual 303d Fighter Group Website

Tailgate Posted January 13, 2012 Author Posted January 13, 2012 Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Tanker gives the pre-contact approach altitude 1,000 ft lower , is that normal? The reason I'm asking is that I think I remember one mission where he gave his own actual altitude, but he may have descended by the time I got there, not sure. I guess in most cases the briefing should tell me the Tanker altitude.
Inseckt Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 (edited) There could be several reasons for this. The first thing that springs to mind is that it might be rounding off, (which they do), but only upwards? Second; I can't remember off my mind, but the tanker might be giving "flight level" which will differ from your barometric reading if you are adjusted for barometric deviance from "normal day".... Edit: Read you question more thoroughly, and I think he is supposed to give his own altitude, and not altitude minus 1k... Tailgate Posted January 14, 2012 Author Posted January 14, 2012 I must have missed the part on the checklist where I'm supposed to bring up ATIS and enter the altimeter pressure. :)
Zenga Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 when I remember correctly (not 100% sure), the tanker once asked me to stay 1k below (and 1 mile behind) when his reply to my refuelling request was "chicks in trail"...he already had have two other clients he was about to refuel. As long as that is not the case, I think he gives his own altitude (without -1k).
Tailgate Posted January 16, 2012 Author Posted January 16, 2012 Wow, the alt setting is given at taxi clearance and I just discovered that if you set the analog altimeter it changes on the HUD. Nice attention to detail! :D
Sixgun407 Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 I notice that ATC's baro pressure makes the field elevation wrong.. according to the published charts. Or am I missing something? Regards, Six
