cichlidfan Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Well, a CH stick and throttle aren't going to happen for less than $200 at the best prices I have seen.;) ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, i7-6700K, Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, Crucial 32GB DDR4 2133, Samsung 950 Pro NVMe 256GB, Samsung EVO 250GB & 500GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Black, Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! RIPTIDE Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 True. And I would love to have a Warthog, but from what I have heard about both the Cougar and the Warthog now, over the ages, I am very wary of buying one. Especially at the price they want. It seems extreme. $150 is probably the max I would spend on a Hotas. Nice story there. Tell it again? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Cali Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 If you really want to argue the past I can say the same about the quality of the many Cougars I have owned and come in contact with. That CH doesn't have failures is pure propaganda. Ever been to the CH hangar before? Have a look here... http://www.ch-hangar.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?14-Hardware-Help lots of problems listed there huh? Your as accurate as FOX news with your incessant critisisms of Thrustmaster. Some one could easily do the same with CH eh? I suspect and hope most people can see right through it by now though. :P Out I never said they don't break, but they are REALLY reliable. There is no need to bring up the past cause we already know how that will end. Suspect what you want, does it really matter what I or you say anyway? Yep, I don't particularly like the base of CH joysticks, but THEY DONT BREAK. At least, I've never heard of one. TM I hear about a LOT, and there are far less of them around then CH. Hence, I am wary of buying anything from TM, especially at their ridiculous prices. I pulled out my 25 year old CH Flightstick the other day. I think I paid about $20 for it, back in the day. Dusted off all the dirt and mud dobber nests on it, and guess what? It worked! Buttons and all. I'm not a big fan of the base and the throttle, but can't argue with something that works great. I have been asking/telling them for years that they need to make a new throttle, it'd be nice if it was an F-16 style one. Yeah quite right. Why would I pay £258 for a CH setup when I can get a Warthog for £264. No contest. You talking about a whole CH set up or just the stick and throttle for that price? Also a whole set up wouldn't cost $400 dollars brand new try maybe $330 and that's enough left over to buy Cougar MFD's + have $20+ left over. i7-4820k @ 3.7, Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB 1866mhz EVGA GTX 970 2GB, 256GB SSD, 500GB WD, TM Warthog, TM Cougar MFD's, Saitek Combat Pedals, TrackIR 5, G15 keyboard, 55" 4K LED
swift Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 I have a full CH setup and was using it for about 4 years, bought the TMW and never looked back. Both CH and TM works flawlessly. hreich I hope your replacement unit come soon. Hats off to TM for covering whole shipping costs.
159th_Viper Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 You talking about a whole CH set up or just the stick and throttle for that price? Just the Fighterstick (£142) and Throttle (£116). Cali Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Just the Fighterstick (£142) and Throttle (£116). That sucks, you can get them brand new here for under $100 at some places. When I bought my first set it cost about $330 us dollars. The frakenpotato I have now cost $300 and worth every penny. I kept my pedals which are about 8+ years old and still work great. I have put many hours on those babies. i7-4820k @ 3.7, Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB 1866mhz EVGA GTX 970 2GB, 256GB SSD, 500GB WD, TM Warthog, TM Cougar MFD's, Saitek Combat Pedals, TrackIR 5, G15 keyboard, 55" 4K LED
Faelwolf Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 I used to be a fan of CH, and back in the day they were the best you could get. But they have coasted on their reputation for far too long, and now they are way behind the times. The old stick and throttle I had were very reliable, and I dearly loved my Force Feedback stick, which they no longer make. It seems that once they made the switch to USB based equipment, their overall quality, and factory QC went downhill. I bought a stick from them a few years ago, and out of the box there was so much slop in the stick that it was unusable. The fit of the pot shaft to the gimbal was way too loose. I had to do a home repair based on an article on their forum, which voided the warranty. The warranty was useless anyway, as no one answered the phone or responded to e-mails. None. At all. I sold the stick, and bought a Cougar, which has worked flawlessly. I will never even look at CH again. TM at least takes care of a problem when it comes up, and is trying to innovate. CH was very happy to show us their A-10 stick and throttle when TM announced theirs. Well, the artist concept of it, anyway, and they don't know if they will actually sell it to the public, and, um, they'll get back to us.... What store carries the CH A-10 throttle? I will be putting my order in for a Warthog at the end of the month.
Wolfie Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 Yeah, overall, its seems things have gotten too expensive, and they just don't make 'em like they used to. Everythings just thrown together these days by uneducated, underpaid workers who really don't give a dam about their jobs. Hopefully, things will change in the future, and companies and workers will care more about the products they turn out. JellybeanTiger Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 (edited) I've dropped a 360 controller on the ground 60 times as I'm a klutz and not broken it once yet Thrustmaster Hotasses need kid gloves. Like walking around in an antique store with expensive glass goblets around you. One false elbow move and backside hanging out of your pants. Really for the price ,they should be bullet proof. I suppose they are the equivalent of the turntable in audio. Be very gentle. Would have loved to have seen the Cougar's or the Warthog's original plans because I reckon everything gets cheapened by the blokes in the board room meetings. "We can't use that! How can we make a return on our investment." I think most products start well then fall down at the boardroom meeting hehe. That's why everything looks great on the outside but is mutton on the inside. And I don't like the feel of the Cougar at all. The throttle is awful for an Expensive product. The only thing are the pots haven't broken down on mine otherwise I reckon the Saitek x-45 had a better throttle. I tore mine apart and did the foil mod but it still feels crap. Well mine feels silky but it registers weird in the Joystick Analyser.Jumps in percentages in some spots instead of going up and down in 1 percent increments. Edited April 9, 2012 by JellybeanTiger

The firmware issue is not a deficiency that traces back to inferior mechanical durability. Slip ups with bad chip series happen in this industry a lot, just look at what happened at the launch of sandy bridge mainboard controllers. That doesn't mean that the designs were overall inferior, just that one series of a part used had a bad production run. At the numbers these are produced, this turns into a major incident pretty quickly. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!

The CH throttle doesn't lean on it's own weight though does it? It's more modelled on a space game throttle. You can take your hand off it and the thing stays at it's position. Wouldn't mind that. I can stiffen the Cougar throttle to do that but then it feels terrible to me. The best stick I had was a Microsoft Sidewinder ffb 2. Was buttery smooth. But it didn't like Xp back in the day and the FFB started going wonky. If Microsoft made a hotas modelled on that stick,it would send all the other companies into bankruptcy.:D Have 2 FFB settings-Jet,really stiff like a F16 stick and prop for everything else. The throttle with the crappy pot? For the money ,they are a piece of mutton really.
sobek Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 What about the 4 clunks the Cougar stick produces when you move it into diagonals? I've never owned the cougar, i'm talking about the TMWH. If you seriously intend to put those two in the same pot, i'd strongly suggest you get a clue about the WH. ;) Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!

You contact IJ and/or CubPilot and get an upgrade ;) My modded Cougar is still the best stick for the Kamov and helo-flying: Much preferred over the WH. 159th_Viper Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Are you talking mods to the gimbal system? In respect of the flightstick, yes, a complete replacement. In respect of the throttle, new hall sensor and throttle arm IIRC as well as anti-stiction kit (don't take my word for that though as regards the throttle arm: It's been years). Definitely correct re hall sensor though. Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? Click me to commence your Journey of Pillage and Plunder!
