DCS VRAM requirements?

I play at 2560x1600 (C2D @ 3.6Ghz, 4Gb ram, GTX 260 216 core 896mb)

 

Will have more time to get back into DCS and perhaps learn the Hog till DCS:Mustang/Fighter are released.

 

Ive just ran DCSWH and with a little eye candy at 1600p its pretty slow.

 

How much VRAM would DCS use at 1600p with AA?

 

Will be upgrading to ivy bridge and some decent rudder pedals soon so graphics card upgrade has to be within budget...

 

GTX 480 1.5gb @ £140 (Used)

GTX 560 ti 448 1.2gb @ £160 (new)

HD6950 2gb @ £180 (new, cannot be unlocked to 6970)

 

Once upgraded I imagine id be interested in ARMA3 and C&C generals 2 when released.

 

Any recommendations?

I'm not a big AMD fan but I do have a 6950 (sapphire) for my sons computer and I can say it's rock solid. Personally I would go for that as your resolution is pushing the boundaries of the Vram with the other 2 cards.

896mb VRAM is definitely too small for that resolution with any eyecandy on. I'd recommend looking at options around the 1.5 to 2gb mark. Not the GTX 480 though unless it's very cheap - it gobbles watts like crazy and isn't really all that impressive.

Should not be anything noticeable - your monitor(s) are the big factor there.

Running a 2560x1440 main with a 1920x1080 secondary (game usually not using) on a 3GB GTX580. A few games hover around the 2GB VRAM usage area so if you can get a 3GB card you will have some headroom.

Easily clocks to 1000mhz on stock volts to equal 7970 but at £100 less.

 

Might end up biting the bullet and paying extra this round to get something that lasts for a few years. I guess I always knew when buying my monitor id have to spend extra on gfx cards to push that many pixels.

Not a big fan of Sli/xfire especially as its fairly useless for DCS...at least for now.

Currently using a Hazro 30" monitor.

 

I miss the days of reasonably priced epic gfx cards like the 9700pro and 8800 gtx!

Have you looked into the HD7850? I recently got the MSI Twin Frozr III 7850 and I have it clocked to 1050mhz with zero issues.

 

I think it's better than the 6950 (especially at that clock) and will run you about the same as the 2gb model.

Looking into it. Great card and falls within budget. Reading on the forums it overclocks to 1200mhz.

What resolution are you running?

Right now I'm running 1920x1080p. I'm waiting for an adapter since the new 7xxx series cards don't come with two dvi ports =( Only downside so far imo.

 

When I get my second monitor hooked up I'll most likely put the MFD's on it for BS2 and A-10C. I'll post here again after I do that.
