goon3r Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 Looking for some feedback from TM Warthog owners that have had their unit for a few months. How do you guys feel about the build quality of the unit now that you've had it for a while ? Any buttons stop working or sticking ? I just returned one unit to a retailer for the china hat being stuck in the fwd position. Have any of you guys experienced this ? Is this something could have been fixed with lube ? I also had an issue with the slew stick getting stuck in-game (not physically stuck) while slewing in DCSW. I would have to let go of the slew stick and press it again for it to continue slewing. I think this might have been a software/setup issue though. Anyone experience this with the default DCSW mappings ? I only had the unit for 5 days or so and I was definitely impressed with the accuracy of the stick; the throttle I wasn't in love with so much. At this point I'm just wondering if I should give it a 2nd chance. $450+ just seems like an awful lot of cash for something that seemed a bit fragile. I currently have a 2.5 yrs old x52 and I'd really like a more accurate stick at this point. So its either get 2nd HOTAS WH or get a CH Fighterstick and keep my X52 throttle.
MTFDarkEagle Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 Had mine since november 2010. No trouble at all with it. Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread

mnrty Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 Ive had mine for about 3 months now, and everything works perfectly except the pinky button on the throttle. That stop working from time to time, but it mostly works fine so i dont think of it to much.
MTFDarkEagle Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 Try and get in touch with Thrustmaster Support. Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
goon3r Posted April 6, 2012 Author Posted April 6, 2012 Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I just got a bad unit perhaps. As much as I loved my X52 from day 1, I actually had 3 of those in my first 6 months...but that only cost me $80 so I was a bit more forgiving. I just need to decide if I wanna try a 2nd WH. Try and get in touch with Thrustmaster Support. As far as TM support, I actually did contact them for clarification on the china hat sticking. I was pretty sure it wasn't supposed to do that but only had the unit for a day or so before i noticed it. In any case, I wasn't too happy with them, particularly when they kept dancing around my question and then told me that I need to update my drivers and firmware and see if it resolves the issue. At that point I realized they were wasting my time since it was obviously a mechanical issue with the switch. I eventually mailed the unit back to the retailer.
MTFDarkEagle Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 Hmm.. Strange.. Well I hope you get it sorted, it's an EXCELLENT piece of kit! Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
Turk10mm Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 my chinahat is sticky, so i know what you mean. sometimes i have to pull it back into position. I wish the switches were a little crisper and better made. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Recruiting open for A-10C and/or KA-50 Squadrons http://www.firstfighterwing.com/forums/content.php
Speed Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 (edited) A guy in the 16th had the same problem. China hat was sticking. The TM support folks were also evasive and clueless. They told him to send the stick but not the throttle back. They were so clueless they probably thought "China hat" was a disparaging remark about the build quality. I think he eventually got TM to fix it though. Surprisingly, the tech support I got from Saitek for my X-65 when one of the rotaries died wasn't that bad. No questioning of my intelligence, or tech support dance, they just immediately told me to first contact the retailer (Amazon) and see if they could send me a replacement/return it; if not, since it was still under the two year warranty, then I should send it to one of their centers and they would fix it for free. MTFDarkEagle Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 What you could do is make a video of the china hat and send it to prove your point? Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
Pilotasso Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 Since novermber 2010, no issues except stikiness on the throtthle push hat and on the sticks axis. It has always been like this out of the box. .
goon3r Posted April 6, 2012 Author Posted April 6, 2012 What you could do is make a video of the china hat and send it to prove your point? Yeah, I already sent it back to to retailer though. A guy in the 16th had the same problem. China hat was sticking. The TM support folks were also evasive and clueless. They told him to send the stick but not the throttle back. They were so clueless they probably thought "China hat" was a disparaging remark about the build quality. I think he eventually got TM to fix it though. Kinda sounds like what I was dealing with. I think they were ready to have it shipped after my last e-mail, but by that time I was pretty pissed. I think I got my point accross to them in my last e-mail. I wasn't about to play games with them, sending it back to retailer was easier. As for your buddy... asking to send back the stick if a button on the throttle is stuck...that is outrageous. Question: For those of you that have had to RMA stick or throttle. Does TM actually repair your unit or do they just replace ?

Lucky Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 My stick is only about 3 months old and I have the same sticky China hat as some of you. Mine would work maybe 3 or 4 times and then stick in the forward position and I would have to pull it back. I sent TM Support a video and they suggested there may be dirt in the switch and said to put a small amount of plastic/metal friendly lube in the switch and see what happens. I haven't done this yet, but will try it today and see how it works. I will post back with results. Mine would work for about 3 or 4 times then stick as well. Not sure about dirt in the switch after 3 months, mine was a week old. Anyways, let us know how the lube works. I'm still considering getting a 2nd unit and may have to deal with this one way or another. :noexpression:
Tornado_Pilot Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 I noticed today, that my slew switch died... pretty annoying... also, to hear that TM support is that shitty... well... is there any form of replacement? my uncle is an electrician who works on PLCs and more often on SMDs and stuff... should be an easy one to replace that switch.

I'm pretty sure they will help you, even if you were out of warranty. I think what SOME of us have seen so far is that getting them to acknowledge your issue is a bit like pulling teeth. Patience is required I suppose.
Lucky Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 Well the lube didn't work. Not that I thought it would. In fact, it has gotten worse now, It sticks almost every time. Let's see how TM support wants to handle this. I've done everything they asked. Hopefully they will just send me a new switch and I will install it myself [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Lian Li 011 Dynamic Evo, Core i9 11900K @ 5.0GHz, Corsair H150i CPU cooler, Asus Prime Z590-A, Radeon RX6800 XT64GB, Team T-Force Delta DDR4 3600, Corsair RM1000X PSU, Win 11 x64
Lucky Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Very happy with TM support so far. They answered all my emails within 24 hrs. They are sending me a complete right side of the right throttle. Lucky Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 Part was shipped on 4/13 and I received it today. Not bad considering it came from France. Already had the bad one removed and the connectors marked (2 are the same size, 1 is larger). The wires on the larger connector are very short and it just barely protrudes from the throttle. It took less then 2 minutes to connect the 3 and put the screws back in. Tested all the switches and everything works. goon3r Posted May 27, 2012 Author Posted May 27, 2012 So I actually returned the first unit and after a month or so the china hat on the second unit is getting stuck. Seems like this is more of an issue than TM would care to admit. Part was shipped on 4/13 and I received it today. Not bad considering it came from France. I may have to go down this same route with TM support. I wonder if there is anything different about the part they shipped you versus the part that comes from the factory...
Spy Guy Posted May 27, 2012 Posted May 27, 2012 This happens with mine as well. Though, it's not a major issue as I can just "twist" the China Hat a few degrees and it works nicely again. Shame it happens, but it's no biggie... Keeping the receipt, though, in case it gets worse. They DID say two years warranty... after all :music_whistling: Problems setting up switches on the HOTAS Warthog or similar? Tutorial Here

I didn't notice anything different betweeen the 2 externally. I'm guessing they just plucked one out of the bin they use on the assembly line. Open a ticket with TM support and they will tell you what you need to do.
