Well, I attempted my first landing yesterday. It was at the Batumi base.

There were some problems getting the ATC to answer back after my initial request for "inbound". I must have set the radio frequency wrong the first time, but I was able to recover from that foobar.

Upon the final approach I was able to actually touchdown on the landing strip smoothly without any jarring bumps. I felt rather proud of myself at that.

Once I was down I reduced the throttles to minimum and started tapping on the toebrakes. It was then that I noticed that the brakes and the aircraft were taking sort of a loooong time to slow down.

Man you wouldnt' think a simulator would make you start sweating, but that retaining wall at the end of the runway was coming up a little too quick for my liking. I actually ran out of runway and ended up stopping within a couple of feet of that retaining wall. Needless to say I was standing up on the brakes at that point. :megalol:

I believe the only reason I got the craft stopped was because my nosewheel got damaged once I left the pavement. I did hear a "pop" just before it stopped.

All in all, at least I didn't total the plane. I'm not a pilot in RL so it's been a slow road to learn all the basics for this beast.

Don't forget to fully deploy your speedbrakes after touchdown. Jolly good job notwithstanding for your first landing

More info, finals approach speed?,did u open the air brakes?,Full Flaps down? Depending on fuel amount on and weapons load,ur final approach speed will vary, but u should be able to stop within the runway if there is nothing wrong with the brake configuration.

System Specs :

 You are probably right about not using the airbrakes. I know the flaps were full down, and my airspeed was around 180 at touchdown. (need smiley standing on brakes here)

Another point is to reduce throttles to idle on the flare, as opposed to after touchdown. Late reduction in thrust can cause you to "float", which will use up a LOT of runway. For most airfields in DCS you should be able to land comfortably even without much use of wheelbrakes - if any at all.

But that's a question of practice. Well done. :)

What I'd suggest for practicing this is to get up there and do a lot of touch-and-go's. Just fly the cirquit several times, and each time to touch wheels to the tarmac apply full throttles again and get up to do it again. That'll help you get the flare part down.

Another thing I do, though that I'm made to understand that real A-10's don't do, is to ride down the runway, speedbrakes fully deployed, with my noeswheel up until ~100 knots to offer greater air resistance. Old habit from the F-15. :P

Another note, regarding nosewheel, that may or may not be relevant: the -1 cautions against use of nose wheel steering at the same time as differential braking, since the stresses involved can cause damage to the nose gear assembly.

WAAAAAY too fast.

When empty and low on fuel, 120-ish is more like it. That fast landing speed is most likely your problem on that landing.

To get roughly right landing speed, note the AOA indicator lights on the left HUD bracket. You want to trim your plane such that the centre donut is indicated - this means you have the right AOA for landing, and incidentally this also sets you at roughly the right airspeed for your given weight and drag index.

At a Gross Weight of 37500 pounds, you should be able to come to a complete stop at the first exit of Batumi RW:

Dead-Stop:

That said, there is currently an issue with roll-out distances, which is being worked on. Currently roll-out accords with wet runway conditrions as opposed to dry, which would explain your 'sweats' :D

Oh yes - 180 is waaaaayyyyyy too hot. Try 130 or so.

On landing speeds:

VfBaqcoCyCM

You'll probably have to run it at 1080p to see the speed indication at the bottom left. If I remember right I didn't have any wind component when I recorded that, so the ground speed indication should be pretty much the same as the IAS.

The video was made to show something slightly different, so I did go over the runway, but that was since I was specifically not going to use any wheelbreak at all until the end of the runway to show the difference the speedbrakes do. With a slow enough landing speed, speedbrakes and a gentle tap or two on the wheelbrakes, you should be fine. :)

Funny how everyone says you're looney and "omg my RL C172 that I flew once takes like 13k ft to stop so the A10 should too" - then you come back a few months later and see this.
