Hi there, people,

I was wondering... has ED released any information about the sound engine of the game yet? Will there be features like that amazing "whistle" of a supercharged low-flying Mustang depending on your camera view? Will the engine sound exactly as the original? Many sims, such as the early versions of Il-2, had some flat/boring "bee-sounding" engine sounds (fortunately, mods corrected that eventually).

Sound of pure awesomeness:

Given the fact that ED has pretty much full access to a live, flying P-51D, I would expect the sounds to be as accurate as they can get them within the limitations of the sim.;)

Could you elaborate on that? I'm not totally convinced that it's just the guns @ high angle of attack.

It is.

Listen to merlins running at the ground, the sound from the unmuffled exhausts is way too loud to hear the supercharger. The exhaust gas speed is supersonic, and there's enough mass flow to contribute significantly to top speed, they even made special exhaust ports to gain maximum thrust. Needless to say that the exhausts emit a lot of sound energy.

If you don't believe me, look at some vids on

(and be sure to watch vids where the audio is actually compliant with what you see), the whistle is only pronounced when the airframe is loaded, i.e. when there is significant alpha or beta. Edited by sobek

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

It's not actually, the whistle sound has got to do with the position of the oilcooler and/or water cooler door(s).

There's some dispute about that, but i remember reading about a model where they removed the guns and completely sealed the ports and the whistle was gone.

THe whistle itself is generally generated at the airflow splitted with the sharp edge. I mean LEADING edge.

The radiator doors have only trailing edges and I think they can not be the sources of whistle. Moreover, the coupled air volumes (radiator tunnels) have large sizes and being excitated as resonators would generate low pitch tones.

I have a link somewhere of a discussion between P-51 owners hunting for the source of the whistle, it turned out that when they taped up the gun ports the whistle could not be produced under any flight regime. I'll have a look later for the link.

It is definitely the gun ports

Found it - A general discussion between owners.

I taped up the barrels and just went for a quick flight and guess what? ..............No whistle!!

Not all Mustangs have the same whistle as some do it at high speed or in a dive, but this one whistles at high angle of attack which is why I suspected the inner gun barrels. The most noticable was at around 4g pulls and on landing if you put all three on the ground at the same time. Just did both, and it was quiet. Before you could definitely hear it from the cockpit and that means it must really be loud from outside!

Yep the Coke bottle effect is discussed later in that thread as the cause of the Wailing/Whistle sound

Given Dudley's reputation and what I know he's done and flown, I'm believing him. The company of the link I provided earlier are going to investigate this litterally. I don't know if they have already though.

I also thought it was the gunports untill I was "convinced" by DH.

That's fine - I'll believe TFC/ED who own a P-51 and spent some time recording it.
