I prefer this one: Jira.

(Normally I prefer open source solutions, but this one is so nice. )

But I don't see this happen... :noexpression:

We already use an internal bug tracker.

AFAIU, the idea is to make an independent issue tracker which will be open for all forum members. Nice idea, but the question is, who will moderate it?

Aye - It will be a train-wreck after the first couple of 'Honeymoon-Period' weeks :P

The Bugs and Problems forum with it's respective sub-forums currently do the job pretty well - In my opinion no need for another tracker over and above the one already utilized - inviting trouble that.

I'll put forth an opinion.

There is currently an internal bug tracker. On this bug tracker, devs can be reasonably relaxed about comments they put in in terms of other projects etc, at least as they involve DCS.

With a public bug tracker, they have to be very careful. They can close something and say 'resolved', which might mean targeted for DCS: SuperFlanker, but they can't put that in the public tracker.

This reason, as well as people undoubtedly expecting to see the status of bugs, who is assigned to them, and how much work (in their opinion) is being done, does nothing but foster frustration. In this respect, a public bug tracker is, IMHO, not worth the effort at this point.

Us mods/testers already look at the bug reports in the bug sub-forums and enter them into the private bug-tracker. There's no need for anything else currently.

I see what you did thar! :P Quoting from the internal bug tracker, are we? :smilewink:

I agree, public bug trackers won't work for such immense projects, they barely work with small pieces of software that are designed to perform 1-2 functions at most, and even they make the developers want to end their lives.

I think you guys did a great job with the Public Geh-10C beta sub-forums for bugs, and from the sounds of it are going to do the same with P-51 Moose-tongue, so right on.

I beg to disagree on the negative comments of bugtracking. I believe a tracker would actually calm people down and temper the expectation. People will not whine about schedules and priorities as they will be able to see them. Dev-Heaven for arma works extremely well and helps coelate the list of problems with the game. Even Bohemia uses it because now they have a single platform with which to see what is wrong with their product. In ED you have to pan through multiple forums to see what the issues are. How many times has the same issue been restated over and over again. This would all go away. The moderators would not have to waste all the time they do now answering the same questions 500 times. It seems that ED is making the DCS world product line more of an open source style game in that it wants to build a community of developers that will expand this product. A single tracking platform will greatly enhance this process and it will help these third parties with making their products better by tracking the observations and issues the community (the largest free beta testing resource there is) has uncovered. You really should consider one of these tracking applications. If you want the communities help in making products better (this is a valid assumption because ED releases beta products) then we need a tool to help us get organized as well.

Oh, they won't complain about schedules and their pet bugs? This 8-year history says you're wrong :D

ED isn't doing anything that even resembles open source.

Open Source is probably a misguided term. I meant opening to outside development. And the reason why they complain is because they have no feedback on what is being done. A bug Tracker will eliminate this as they will have a place to see the progress of their requests. 8 years of complaining will be a thing of the past is my point.

No, you are again incorrect. Read what I wrote a few posts back. They may well see no progress on their requests for a variety of reasons.

So why does it work so great with ARMA? Dev-Heaven is the one spot the entire community goes for bug fixes for specific products? They must be doing something right and that community is alot bigger.

ED is not BIS.

Flight sims are not FPS' ... Flight sim communities are not as big.

Dev Heaven appears to be community run and has a lot of focus of community projects on it. After-all its mod community is massive. Not that BID doesn't interact with the site, I'm just saying that it appears to be mostly focused on the ARMA mod community while also providing a resource to BIS as an efficient way to see what bugs users are having. Even though BIS may use it, they probably have their own internal bug tracking system, much like ED and every other software developer out there.

So I suppose there is nothing stopping anyone from making their own public bug tracker for DCS...

The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world.
