seikdel Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 If I flip the laser into designator mode, is the A-10 at all able to see what I'm lasing? I did a brief search, but all I found was the coordinate method.

TurboHog Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Yes... With nightvision on you can see a laser spot or an IR-pointer track. Try it with the KA-50... lase something in the middle of the night and you will see your a bright light at the spot you were lasing through your nvg. Of course no LSS compatibility between the Rus and the US laser, so no is still the best answer. 'Frett'
Jona33 Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 No, you can see an A-10's IR pointer which is completely different from the laser used to guide weapons. The Ka-50 has no IR pointer. A while ago there was a bug that meant the actual laser did show up but that should have been fixed by now I think. Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

Yes, visible, when fired at night with nvg on for the A10C pilot. You will see a bright light at the target. Make a quick night mission in the KA-50 and start firing your laser and look at the spot with NVG. You'll see what I mean. So yes, possible. Practical? Hell no! 'Frett'
ShuRugal Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 while the rangefinder laser will be visible on NVGs, the KA-50 does not use semi-active homing, so it cannot "paint" a target for other aircraft, even other KA-50s. the beam-riding laser is considerably lower in power than a laser-designator used on semi-active targeting systems.
AlphaOneSix Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 (edited) the KA-50 does not use semi-active homing, so it cannot "paint" a target for other aircraft, even other KA-50s. While this is true for the Vikhr, the Ka-50 can laser designate for the Kh-25ML, which is semi-active laser guided. Still, neither can be seen by NVG's, since it's on a different wavelength. If it can currently be seen in-game using NVG's, then it's a flaw, albeit a relatively low priority one. Edited April 24, 2012 by AlphaOneSix
EtherealN Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Well, the Ka-50 does actually have designation. Not compatible with A-10 systems (for obvious reasons), but you can switch it to a designation mode. Obviously, Vikhrs don't work with that, but other weapons do. ShuRugal Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 really? i thought the KA-50 couldn't mount the Kh-25 (or rather, wasn't checked out with it)
AlphaOneSix Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 really? i thought the KA-50 couldn't mount the Kh-25 (or rather, wasn't checked out with it) This is true, at least that the fleet of Ka-50's in service cannot mount the Kh-25ML, but I do believe that the prototypes were tested with it and besides, the laser functionality is actually present in operational aircraft, even though they can't actually carry the weapon. This sort of situation is not at all uncommon, where a manufacturer prepares for all the bells and whistles, but the government contract cuts a lot of them out, and it's cheaper to leave some things in rather than rebuild/redesign certain elements... Such as the laser designation capability of the Ka-50 (although I believe it can "buddy lase" for another aircraft such as an Su-25 that CAN carry the Kh-25ML...but I could be wrong there...I know it has been done in-game, where one Ka-50 buddy lased for another Ka-50 that launched a Kh-25ML from some crazy range).
