Teriander Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 Hello, I"ve been playing DCS's A-10 since last summer and I think it's great. I've been considering getting LockOn to fly the F-15 only, but haven't because the game appears much older and not as detailed as A-10 because it was created by another company. Is that accurate? Basically if I buy LockOn now, can I play it in a world as detailed as A-10? Also, does this DCS World allow me to play both of these games if I buy LockOn now or would I have to repurchase it later? Thanks!
Rusty_M Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 It's a little more complicated than that. This answer assumes that you are not resident in Russia (where the situation is a little different) The original Lock On is, I believe by the same team, but published by UbiSoft. Since then, the same team (the Eagle Dynamics team here) have created two addons entitled Flaming Cliffs. The most recent, so far, is Flaming Cliffs 2, which is compatible online with Black Shark, but not Black Shark 2 or A-10. I believe a Flaming Cliffs 3 is being developed, but is not available yet. This should hopefully be compatible with A-10, BS2, P-51 and any other aircraft in DCS: World. You will need the original Lock On to play any Flaming Cliffs module, but you will not need the previous Flaming Cliffs games. The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine! http://www.twitch.tv/rusty_the_robot https://www.youtube.com/user/RustyRobotGaming
Teriander Posted May 14, 2012 Author Posted May 14, 2012 Thanks for the response! Im not in Russia. Im in Texas. This makes more sense now. I was confused about the Flaming Cliffs 2 thing, it looked like it Requires LockOn, and LockOn as you said was Published by UbiSoft. For the love of God, please tell me Eagle Dynamics has cut all ties with UbiSoft? I never want to purchase another game from UbiSoft but I do want to play LockOn under Eagle Dynamics development. It looks like I can only purchase a "boxed" version of LockOn for 8.99 from DCS. Then buy Flaming Cliffs 2 for 29.99. Then Im able to fly the F-15 in a realistic environment like I want. Is that accurate? Basically what do I need to do to enjoy the F-15? Should I wait for Flaming Cliffs 3?
Grimes Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 Best to wait for FC3 since it will be compatible with DCS World. You can buy lockon now if you want to get used to flying the aircraft available in it, but remember its a more of a "lite" sim in terms of avionics and FM. Also you can download DCS World as part of the P-51 beta and you will have access to the Su-25T, which will give you an idea of how the avionics and FM are modeled. The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world. WildBillKelsoe Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 (edited) Im in Texas. Lone star state of mind Basically what do I need to do to enjoy the F-15? Should I wait for Flaming Cliffs 3? Definitely.. It looks like I can only purchase a "boxed" version of LockOn for 8.99 from DCS. Then buy Flaming Cliffs 2 for 29.99. Then Im able to fly the F-15 in a realistic environment like I want. Is that accurate? That is not accurate. You can get BOTH LOMAC 1.1 AND FC2 from amazon (LOCK ON PLATINUM) I have it here.. Teriander Posted May 14, 2012 Author Posted May 14, 2012 Best to wait for FC3 since it will be compatible with DCS World. If I wait for FC3, will it be a Stand-alone? Or expansion pack that requires LockOn? Would be nice if I only need to buy FC3.

I never want to purchase another game from UbiSoft but I do want to play LockOn under Eagle Dynamics development. As I understand it, the only ties with Ubisoft that remain is a contractual obligation that requires any "Flaming Cliffs" series game to require that the original LockOn be already installed during the Flaming Cliffs installation process. Once you are done installing Flaming Cliffs 1/2/(3?), LockOn can be removed from your system. Intelligent discourse can only begin with the honest admission of your own fallibility. andysim Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 im glad I kept my copy of Lockon hehe, I have not used it for 5+ years (except a short burst to try out FC2 before I went back to the A-10c/Ka50. I personaly cant stand UBISoft or the way they walked all over the Silent hunter series and ruined it. The last game I ever got from them was Anno 2070 on steam and neither Steam nor UBI was able to help me get it to run. All I got was automatic responses with the same usless answers over and over. Im done with my rant =)
Teriander Posted May 15, 2012 Author Posted May 15, 2012 Thanks for all the great feedback. So is there a digital download version? Someone provided a link to Amazon but that and the purchase option on DCS looks like its only Box versions of LockOn. I haven't bought a boxed game in like 6 years. Since I don't plan to go backwards in evolution, I'd like to find a digital download version. Any suggestions? By the way Eagle Dynamics, the fact that you're forcing me to purchase something with the UBISoft logo on it angers me. I swore to the God's of simulations that I would never disgrace myself again... But I really want to try Flaming Cliffs 3 maybe even 2.

ED wouldn't make you buy from UBI if they didn't have to, but they are contractually obligated. They got screwed, so it isn't as if they do it by choice. :ermm:

I'll consider this source lol. But Im confused about something. I just noticed "LockOn" also has a flyable A-10. Is that accurate? If so, why was Eagle Dynamics able to create a separate A-10 game under DCS that doesn't require purchasing LockOn, but not the F-15? Even for the Russia aircraft in the game. I mean if the DCS version of the A-10 is completely separate from LockOn, I don't see why they just dont model a new F-15 game off it without using any LockOn code. I guess they thought of this and have their reasons they can't... Kind of blows.. I hate UBISoft.

Teriander Posted May 17, 2012 Author Posted May 17, 2012 Ok, so I bit the bullet and bought LockOn and LockOn Flaming Cliffs 2. So far so good. But the training section is completely blank. Where do I need to go to learn to fly the F-15 in this game? Am I missing some files?
joey45 Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 The A10A in LOMAC is not the same as the A10C in DCS.. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Where do I need to go to learn to fly the F-15 in this game? Am I missing some files? The training in the game was provided as video files. You can view them on YouTube, or download them and install them. They don't fit on the DVD so they're not included in the base sim. http://lockon.co.uk/flaming_cliffs_2/training/
