PeterP Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 So ... whats it all about these modules? Easy-peasy: You start your DCS:World install +++ You follow the news ticker +++ When a Module becomes available you simply click the appropriate download link +++ than you install it ! +++ and all without a AutoPatcher!
Speed Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Don't know if this was mentioned before, But now with DCS:World you will get a pop-up window with news. And it is always open at first start when something changed and you are on-line! And also about Patches. And it contains info and even a link -you can click to download this! How about this?! You only have to do two clicks to get the new download!! - amazing! I think it's great ! 1000% better than before!:D Nice try, but you've got the patch numbers all wrong! FC1 used two patch numbers to designate a version; BS/FC2 used three numbers; A-10C/BS2 uses four numbers; it only stands to reason that by the time your hypothetical "DCS F-14" module came along, we'd be using five numbers, like, 1.3.1.5.2 or something easy to remember like that. :D Intelligent discourse can only begin with the honest admission of your own fallibility. sobek Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 and can chose if and when you want to get it, much better option if you ask me ;) Auto patcher does not necessarily mean that you are forced to update. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
RoaringBones Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 you basically, responded to your own question. ;).Many games now a days have Auto patching why wouldn't DCS world correct me if im wrong but im sure it would take a load off a few servers instead of just doing an Exe.
Nate--IRL-- Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 You still need a server to host the executable, it doesn't magically appear. Many games nowadays also have always-on DRM, as you can see, that is not a very good reason to do anything. Who mentioned "always-on DRM"? Nate--IRL-- Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 Ahh ok I understand now. Personally I would see it implemented as an Auto-Notification system with a built in installer. So, first you get the notification on the news page on the main screen and you can decide whether or not to download and install from there. I think everybody would be happy with that. Ramstein Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 Steam uses the auto-patcher concept, for all games... and if you don't want to over-write any mods you can turn off 'Cloud' feature in your options... and of course keep backups.. note: I am not endorsing Steam, I am just sayin' :joystick: ASUS Strix Z790-H, i9-13900, WartHog HOTAS and MFG Crosswind G.Skill 64 GB Ram, 2TB SSD EVGA Nvidia RTX 2080-TI (trying to hang on for a bit longer) 55" Sony OLED TV, Oculus VR
Nate--IRL-- Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 I'm sure there are better ways of dealing with mods - for instance if mods were accommodated for in the users directory, they would be untouched when patching. galagamo Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 Kinda like ArmA? galagamo Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 I'm not aware how it's done in ARMA could you elaborate? Nate Sure:) In ArmA they use "mod folders" The mod is self contained in its own folder, the engine will prioritize it over the vanilla content when instructed via launch options on the shortcut [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] OS:WIN7 HP X64|MOBO:ASRock Z68|CPU:I52500k@4Ghz|RAM:12Gb 3x4Gb GSkill Ripjaws 9-9-9-24 @1600Mhz|GPU:ASUS GTX580|HDD:2x128Gb Crucial sataIII SSD raid0|PSU:Antek 1000watt|Case:Antek 1200|Peripherals: TMWH|Saitek ProFlight rudder pedals|TrackIr4
Nate--IRL-- Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 Sure:) In ArmA they use "mod folders" The mod is self contained in its own folder, the engine will prioritize it over the vanilla content when instructed via launch options on the shortcut OK that's cool - however most DCS mods are small - perhaps I should call them tweaks. That said larger mods like the ADA mod for FC2 - could certainly be accommodated in the existing Mods Folder in the Main DCS World folder. The tweaks however would be stuff like edits to LUA files (Smoke mods, weapon tweaks etc.) that would have to move to the Users folder in order not to be over written on update. So 1) Mods that add stuff to DCS go in \\Mods folder - does not change DCS core files. 2) Mods that edit existing DCS files go in the Users folder. This stuff is ignored for MP. neroroxxx Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 i'd be happy with a notification that says that a new patch is available or a new version is available and maybe you comment and rate each patch so others can see what's going on with it, just like there's that window that shows news same with updates and you can update right from world.
