I'm underwhelmed. What does it offer over mouse&keyboard? Multitouch, I suppose, but I'm a crabby old man who wants something other than novelty from it.

I'd also like a better idea of how it works...

I am going to be extremely vary about that.

I hope that I am wrong but that looks a lot like a scam.

"Popped up from no where"

"A shoddy made website with terrible security where we are to input our credit card numbers."

"A product that is too good to be true"

"None of the supposedly USB connected devices actually have a USB-coord"

"The device which is on the bench manages to magically track the back of the hand"

As said, there can be explanations for all of these things but I wouldn't send them any money just yet.

I'm not sure what is so fantastic about it really - it's another implementation of the same kind of technology we see in the Kinect and the new Samsung motion-controlled TV's.

These kinds of things have already been done, the only "new" thing here appears to be higher resolution on the unit.

Now, of course, the interesting thing is whether a small startup can beat big players in this field. Not impossible (that's happened before - remember when Altavista was the big search engine and there was this weird little upstart called "Google"?), but I'd like to see prototypes in the hands of reputable reviewers before I believe it. :)

EDIT: Irregular, you don't need a cord for a USB device. There are actually plenty of wireless mice that work this way, for example; they have an extremely tiny USB connector that is the computer-side wireless unit, and then does the communication from that USB unit to the unit in question. Wireless USB units have been around for almost 10 years. :P

If you want a real 'warm and fuzzy' just look at the website for Zazuba.com which apparently is where one of the founders came from.

Michael Buckwald is the CEO and co-founder. Prior to founding Leap Motion, Michael was the CEO of Zazuba.com

I tried to read some of the review/articles on Zazuba but the english is so bad they are almost incomprehensible.

Example sentence (this is one of the more readable ones):

In case a quickly and also cost-effective SSD will be just what you are looking for, the particular SanDisk Intense 240GB will be flawlessly created for an individual.

This probably would not work as a primary input source. First of all your arms would tire after a while and it would become very uncomfortable. And the second problem would be the lack of tactile feedback.

But it might work as some sort of additional input source.

Aye, it's not like the mouse replaced the keyboard, for example.

Similar to the drawing tablets many artists use - good thing for specific applications. Whether this specific one is genuine or not, I do think this kind of thing will definititely become a valuable peripheral at some point; but no-one should expect it to completely replace what we have. Sometimes the "old" tech stays around for a long time simply because it's good. It's not like we're rushing to replace steering wheels in cars just because they're an old control type. :P

leap motion, track IR and a 3d tv. all that would be missing then would be tactile feedback gloves so i can feel the virtual switches i'm reaching out to touch.

Toxx is right. Never gonna to hapoen.

more precise than kinect, but only viable for bots.

You can't sustain your arms horizontally more than 5mn without support.

And if you do, your arms will be unusable long before you die.

Like the tactil keyboards. not viable right now, you can't rest your fingers without typing.

It's sad those guys are making pure design tools.

One true utility tool : Optimus Keyboard. the one they designed on photoshop some years ago. Problem : price, pieces size, weight, consumption, final ugly product (and heavily photoshoped on the site).

The day they mix the Apple Keyboard, with digital keys, i will rush on it.
