Personally, I'd rather have the capabilities of the JDAMs themselves modelled before pretty explosions ;). But it'd be nice to have more realistic & varied explosions at some point.

Yikes - you can tell the 2000 pounders from the 500 pounders: That's just nasty

Reminds me of the article I read about an F15 crew who used a 2 thousand pounder to kill a MI-24 hind chopper in mid flight.....

Actually the chopper was taking off, the copilot was working hard to keep the lazer on him the whole time, and then BAM!!!!!!!!!!! The other choppers ran scared and got popped by other F15 with Aim-9s.

"Just as we released the bomb, the airspeed readout on the radar showed the target at 100 knots and climbing. The lead chopper had picked up and started moving. I said, "There's no chance the bomb will get him now," even though Dan was working hard to keep the laser spot on him. I got a good lock with my missile and was about to pickle off a Sidewinder when the bomb flew into my field of view on the targeting IR screen.

There was a big flash, and I could see pieces flying in different directions. It blew the helicopter to hell, damn near vaporized it. We sat there for a few seconds, just staring."

This article also taught me that AWACS actually spots out ground targets too... I didnt know that! Wish it could be implemented in DCS...

I think the E-3 picked up some of the capabilities of the JSTARS when they went from A to C models.

As computers get smaller and we get smarter, were able to upgrade our forces with current tech...

That being said, as far as having AWACS direct you onto ground targets...

No... Ya don't. Trust me on this one...

With all due love and respect for any AWACS crewdogs in here... AWACS has a hard enough time dealing with airborne targets...I've been on the recieving end of some pretty gorked up "AWACS DIRECTED" rendezvous during my career... I've been INFLIGHT...IN A COMBAT ZONE (Kosovo) listening to F-15's and F-16's prosocuting a CONFIRMED BANDIT and all the while AWACS was muttering "Picture Clean" over HVAA freq. The FIGHTERS called our retrograde because as they put it later while getting gas... "WE needed to protect you because without gas we werent going home either"

Our favorite saying was "AWACS job during peacetime was to simulate the enemy..." Now JSTARS... Thats another story.

actually the AWACS can detect ground targets..there are many different ways and systems used but, they can do it.All depends on situations.
