tflash Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 According to several news outlets it seems that the taliban destroyed up to six Harrier jets in their attack on Camp Bastion: http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2012/09/insurgents-posed-u-s-troops/ http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/1693071/Taliban-raiders-wore-US-uniforms-hit-jets http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-19614911 http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=9be_1347758337 http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/sep/15/yuma-harrier-jets-marine-felled-afghanistan/ [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
marcos Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 (edited) I didn't hear about the Harriers. Is this the same attack they were talking about yesterday or a new one? Don't think Prince Harry being there is helping keep things calm. Edited September 16, 2012 by marcos

Eddie Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 First significant attack on Bastion, it was only a matter of time. Harry being there has, at most, made it happen sooner but it was always going to happen. Being built in the middle of the desert has protected it so far, but that won't continue forever now the place is nearly as big as Kandahar, and in a higher threat area of the country.
marcos Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 Damn. 4 NATO members were killed at a Kabul checkpoint too. Green on blue. http://news.yahoo.com/military-afghan-inside-attack-kills-4-nato-troops-044300980.html
Eddie Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 It's that time of the year, things always pick up towards the end of the Summer before the Taleban head up their winter bases in the Hindu Kush/over the Pakistan border.
marcos Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 I sometimes get annoyed when the summer is ending too, but this is ridiculous. September must be like international terrorism month.
aaron886 Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 Well I hope the coalition turns it into "international kill a bunch of Taliban month."
smnwrx Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 looks like the CO of VMA-211 was one of the marines KIA. Very tragic compounded by the fact that these air frames were destroyed sitting idle on a ramp. http://www.fox43.com/news/wpmt-pennsylvania-marine-killed-in-afghanistan-air-base-attack-20120917,0,4404198.story?track=rss
G00dnight Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 they targeted the harriers because they were hurting them, plain and simple we do the same if a cell of insurgents is a pain they get targeted. if they were after harry they would have targeted the brit base. Pyroflash Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 The sad thing is that the Taliban probably valued the destroyed Harriers higher than the dead Marines.. Kind of makes you think.. If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.
smnwrx Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 (edited) The sad thing is that the Taliban probably valued the destroyed Harriers higher than the dead Marines.. Kind of makes you think.. From a military strategic standpoint, the destroyed aircraft are more valuable then a few personel. What is sad is that the Taliban has no problem sending its own people to their certain death just to destroy a few planes, bearly a setback as far as our over all military strategy goes. aaron886 Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 He's right. It's not a nice thought, but it's true.
