thanks guys!

I use Nikon D300 and Sigma 50-500mm f4.5-6.3, which is not really considered a high-end lens and can be quite soft in the 400-500mm range. But you know what? This picture was taken (according to EXIF) at 270mm! So yeah, 400mm is more than sufficient lens for overflights, though when you are up on the mountain and shooting down towards targets, you'd need more... much more... but it's more than enough for use from spectators area or maybe even Ebenfluh

Recently purchased Sigma 150-500. I too had soft issues in the 400-500 mm range but only with the target outside the infinity range. I had the lens and body (Canon 650D) calibrated at a Sigma service centre. Its made a significant difference. I have also found shooting at 2 stops smaller (like F8 since at 500mm best it can do is F6) has helped as well. Great fan of Manual shutter speed and F stop with Auto ISO :)
