What's a realistic altitude and airspeed for in-air refueling? (assuming the KC-135 and A-10).

Side note - I just learned the hard way that the KC-135 is an absolute speed demon compared to the Hog. I'd set up a practice mission for in air refueling, and once the tanker reached its last waypoint it turned off course (I'm guessing to RTB) and just left me in the dust :shocking: I love the A-10, but it's a bit funny that we can be happily and easily outrun by a flying gas station :D

I usually have them orbiting at 230 at 16k. Not sure if it's realistic, but it works even with the heaviest loadout.

Is that 230kts on the HUD or set as the orbit speed in the editor?

I usually set a race-track orbit between 17, 20k at 280kts. This gives me about 215kts on the HUD, give or take.

How do you actually get the tanker to go the speed you want? I've got a mission I made for practice, but the tanker definitely is not orbiting at the speed I set. I have it set for 220kts but the actual speed best I can tell is between 170kts and 180kts.

The speed you set in the editor is TAS, so the indicated airspeed will be lower at higher altitudes. Put the CDU repeater on one of your MFDs, set it to POS mode, and toggle the airspeed to TAS and you'll see it cruising right along at the speed you set.

I remember reading in one of the KC-135's TO's that the A-10 is "performance limited" and sometimes tobogganing is required to refuel it...

I'll ask a pilot about tanking A-10's tonight.

How do you set up Tabogganing? Set the start of the orbit at 20k and ending at 10k and just refuel on the downside? I guess if you spread the points out far enough you can refuel in one leg. Can't really set the orbit to do that, just use two points far enough apart.

Reconnect

Are you guys sure that re-connect to the tanker is working properly?...I can relative easy connect as long I situate myself with in the parameter of speed altitude and wing level ...getting fuel ok until I disconnect for whatever reason...there is no way I can get back to re-connect...no matter what I do, corrections ,keeping the plane stable and having the tanker kissing my jet nose it will NOT re-connect...yes I am following the radio tanker orders to refuel...No way...doesn’t work...Once I restart the mission guess what..!piece of cake!...I connect very easy.....So looks that once we open the mission the first try works..After that, just forget it….I will like to know anybody else going through the same experience..:music_whistling:

Thanks

Are you re-setting your receptacle with the nosewheel steering button?

So I set a tanker to orbit at 15,000 at a speed of 331 knots which, if that is TAS, should have given me around 255 kias.

However just like all my other attempts to set this up, the tanker was still going around 170-180 kias.

Ensure you edit the orbit task speed as well as the waypoint speed.

And FYI the refuelling speed for the A-10 is 220 KIAS which is around 290 KTAS (depending on air temp) at 15,000 ft MSL.

Thanks Eddie. I'll check again but I think you are right. I think I did forget to edit the actual task.

Cool, thanks for the info.

Input from a tanker pilot...

A-10s like to refuel at about 195 kias. They can normally hang on at 205, but its hard for them to get on the boom going that fast. We normally go down to FL190 for them. They can go higher but I cant use flaps at FL200 or up, so its hard for me to get slow enough for them. Hope this helps.

Just watched this video

could be deceptive editing but one shot shows altimeter of tanker at 31000ft, next shot is a10 refueling.

Would this be possible?

It's probably just the editing, the public affairs people put those videos together, and I doubt they pay much attention to those kinds of details.

That's a sweet video though, and it reminded me of something I'd like to see in game, fuel spray on disconnect. :D
