IonicRipper Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 First off I have to say my background is in WWII plane simulators so please excuse my ignorance when it comes to autopilots. I just recently started flying the Su-25T in DCS world (huge props to the devs for making it free) and its finally all starting to make sense to me except for one thing: It seems the autopilot is always looking to kill me... When on final approach, I often find myself having to override the autopilot to stop it from running my plane straight in the ground. Its not a speed issue though as it usually happens when i'm still in the 400 kmh range. It works fine most of the times but on other occasions it seems to goof up bad. I can still play the game fine with the autopilot on, I just can't trust it completely but i have to ask... Is this normal AP behavior or just a bug in the game? i5 4590 @ 3.77GHz | GTX 1060 6GB | 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 | 1TB HDD+500GB HDD | Win10 Home X64 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Eihort Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Pro Tip: Don't fight the AP. It's trying to use trim to fight you. If you're fighting it and deactivate it, you'll wobble all over the place and be way out of trim. So don't fight it before deactivating it, and/or reset your trim when you turn it off.

IonicRipper Posted January 27, 2013 Author Posted January 27, 2013 Welcome :) Which AP mode? Thank you. It usually happens in landing mode. Pro Tip: Don't fight the AP. I remember reading the AP uses the trim controls to fly the plane which i thought was odd at first but now that i think of it, it makes sense. I assigned the AP override button on my joystick since, according to the manual, is actually placed on the control stick of the real Su-25Ts. i5 4590 @ 3.77GHz | GTX 1060 6GB | 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 | 1TB HDD+500GB HDD | Win10 Home X64 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
159th_Viper Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 It usually happens in landing mode.... Landing mode will not land your plane - just gets you to within spitting distance and then deactivates at 50m AGL. It is recommended that you deactivate the AP at 200m AGL and land manually when in Landing mode. Couple of aspects to keep in mind: The Landing mode will bring you in on the glideslope. If you depart the glideslope for whatever reason it will kick you into another AP mode. In addition, disengaging the AP is keypress LAlt-9 and not A, a common mistake which often ends in disaster for the unfortunate Toadie on the other end of the keyboard. Also, watch the speed. At 400km/h you are waaaaaay too fast. Come in at about 320-300 and wheels down at 290-280. Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? SFAL Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 This isi how i got to learn to stay alive in the toad: http://lockon.co.uk/flaming_cliffs_2/training/Su-25T.php#intro1 its ALL there... if u have an smart phone or a pad...have it handy watch it and then replicate... :) a good advise if u have a proper HOTAS (and you will need it) have AP Route Following, Pitch and Roll on your throtle.. and AP over ride on the trigger 1st stage. use 2nd stage to Select Gun. Once you come to terms with targeting you can punch in the AP and get perfect bomb runs... soo free fall bombs video Part II it will take about 2 weeks flying 2-3 hours a day to master it...
IonicRipper Posted January 28, 2013 Author Posted January 28, 2013 It seems you have to nail the landing on the first shot because you can't count on the autopilot for a second try... I was coming in for landing earlier but had to abort because my speed was too high (my error.) I disengaged the AP, turned around and lined up for a second attempt from a good distance away (around 20 KMs.) I turned the AP on but it just didn't want anything to do with this and flew me straight towards the mountains in the background instead. Does this sound strange to anyone? i5 4590 @ 3.77GHz | GTX 1060 6GB | 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 | 1TB HDD+500GB HDD | Win10 Home X64 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Does this sound strange to anyone? I think that when you missed your approach, you did not go around and attempt to land in the same direction. It sounds like you came in from the opposite direction? I'm not 100% sure, but I think the AP landing, like the ILS, only works for the active runway.
IonicRipper Posted January 28, 2013 Author Posted January 28, 2013 (edited) No i went around to land from the same direction as the first time. So from what i gathered so far, I think I'm the only one experiencing this strange AP behavior. Correct? D4n Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 Btw is there an autopilot in the Su-25t at all (or in DCS at all :p ) that automatically tracks the radar altitude and can keep you on a steady radar-height by guiding the pitch? DCS Wishlist: 2K11 Krug SA-4 Ganef SAM, VR-TrackIR icons next to player names in score-chart PvP: 100+ manual player-kills with Stingers on a well known dynamic campaign server - 100+ VTOL FARP landings & 125+ hours AV-8B, F-14 crew, royal dutch airforce F-16C - PvP campaigns since 2013 DCS server-admins: please adhere to a common sense gaming industry policy as most server admins throughout the industry do. Kameni Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 BTW: It helps to set your QNH to the value that coincides with the QNH of specific airport you're landing at :) In english: Set your altimeter to zero, based on a local pressure @airport. _ to decrease or + to increase Keystrokes are: Right Shift and - (not numpad keyboard) to decrease Right Shift and = to increase.
