Leeham Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 If it's an upgrade then the registry will be intact so you shouldn't need to deactivate. ASUS Z-170 PRO Gaming | Intl Core I7 7600 | 16GB Corsair DDR-4 2132 | nVidia 1660 Ti Black Edition 6GB | Saitek X-52 HOTAS | Oculus Rift

Ensi Ferrum Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Never ever install an OS over another, especially Win 8 over Win 7!! You will get a lot of problems, one is that the NewUI apps won't start. Do a clean new install, will save you a lot of time and bug-hunting. h00t74 Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 Yep, Like an idiot I did it and lost my PC. Got the fabulous 0xc00021a error and can not do anything. No recovery, no repair, hell can;t even start in safe mode. Luckily it was time for a new PC which is on the way. Windows 8 is better suited for a tablet I have been told not a desktop anyway.
TomDK Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 Not at all ... Win8 is faster due other suspend modes. There are tools out to get the Win7 desktop back and my idea was to use the 24" touchscreen from helios for win8 ... but no luck with drivers. Lange_666 Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 (edited) Just did the upgrade. I'm normally not an upgrade fan, i prefer clean installs but for 29,99 euro i could not resist. Upgrade went quick and smooth. No need to deactivate DCS stuff. Problems encountered: - Avast antivirus wouldn't run anymore. Uninstalled and re-installed: OK - Somehow the DCS World entry under the Eagle Dynamics directory in the startmenu went missing (and still is). All other installed stuff is still there. For the rest getting onto the desktop is no problem, just one click, and if you install something like classic shell, you get your start button back (easy to choose which one or to implement whatever startorb you like) and you can by-pass the metro interface to avoid that one extra click. Metro interface: What comes standard with Windows seems to need a Windows Live account to get these working (need to play with it a bit more, only have Win 8 installed since yesterday) so these are useless tiles atm. But you can easely remove them (and put them back on), just as other stuff you would like to have on the Metro interface. I liked the Win 7 Aero shell more then the current Win 8 when in desktop mode. Another drawback is that you need to dig into the registry to set your own fonts on the desktop. These are not editable anymore. But with the right info, it's done in a minute or two. Dark and cold startup is a lot quicker then Windows 7. For the rest, i'm still playing around wit it. For the moment it's a keeper. Edited February 1, 2013 by Lange_666 Win11 Pro 64-bit, Ryzen 5800X3D, Corsair H115i, Gigabyte X570S UD, EVGA 3080Ti XC3 Ultra 12GB, 64 GB DDR4 G.Skill 3600. Wayc00lio Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 I've been using it on my main PC and laptop since it was released. Absolutely love it. I almost always am in the desktop though. I can't see what the prob is with the ui. It's fairly customisable and it's just a fancy start menu. No problems! Btw, I got the upgrade when it was next to nothing in price and I did a full clean install. Imperative in my opinion. Plus it was on a brand new PC so it was a no brainer!! Lange_666 Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 (edited) I almost always am in the desktop though. I can't see what the prob is with the ui. It's fairly customisable and it's just a fancy start menu. No problems! The problem with the new UI (Metro) is that it is designed for a touchscreen and that the apps are designed for small screens (read phones and tablets). I played around with it a bit today and although you can get whatever icon you have on your desktop on your Metro screen, they become hugh tiles which can be made 50% smaller but still take up a lot of space on that Metro screen. If you have a full desktop and want to move them over to the Metro screen you do nothing else but scrolling. Also, i don't like the way apps are need to be closed, way much of a hassle (move your mouse to the top left, scroll through the tiles of the open apps, don't loose focus or you start over again, click and select close.... c'mon... be serious... on desktop PC...) For what i have tried so far, the apps don't do much more then what they do on a phone, tablet (including iPads and other Androids) or the apps on a modern TV. Overall i find this poor, very poor, compared to what you get with normal programs (compare the Wikipedia app with the wikipedia website). I don't see me them using very quickly even how hard Microsoft pushes them. It has to get better, a lot better if i want to use the Metro as a desktop replacement. But if you stay on the desktop, it's just a reworked Windows 7 imho (for now....) although i find that you have a lot more direct control in Win 7. PoleCat Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 (edited) Metro interface: What comes standard with Windows seems to need a Windows Live account to get these working (need to play with it a bit more, only have Win 8 installed since yesterday) so these are useless tiles atm. Actually many of the tiles work just fine without using a Windows live account. Some of course require it. Dark and cold startup is a lot quicker then Windows 7. This is because technically a restart is a cold boot under Windows 8. A shut down and start up is a hibernate mode called "Fast Start", this is what allows for the faster start up times. "Fast start" is a feature that can be turned off if needed/desired under "Power options" left pane under "Choose what the power buttons do" in the "shutdown settings" section. "Fast startup is a setting that helps your PC start up faster after shutdown. Windows does this by saving system info to a file upon shutdown. When you start your PC again, Windows uses that system info to resume your PC instead of restarting it. Notes The fast startup setting doesn’t apply to Restart. You need to shut down and then start your PC again for fast startup to take effect. Fast startup is turned on by default in Windows." All in all as you say a great OS. I have had even less issues with Windows 8 then I had with Windows 7. That's right, day to day stability with this OS is even better than my experience with Windows 7. Quite a well designed smoothly running OS. Out Edited February 1, 2013 by PoleCat http://www.104thphoenix.com/
