Two Russian nuclear-armed bombers circled the western Pacific island of Guam this week in the latest sign of Moscow’s growing strategic assertiveness toward the United States.

The Russian Tu-95 Bear-H strategic bombers were equipped with nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and were followed by U.S. jets as they circumnavigated Guam on Feb. 12 local time—hours before President Barack Obama’s state of the union address.

Cali, the Telegraph Article is from 2007. -

The funny thing is... the articles from this week are written in the same urgency as the one 6 years ago. :D

A funny thing appears in the top link.

"Russian strategic bombers are not known to have conducted such operations in the past into the south Pacific from bomber bases in the Russian Far East, which is thousands of miles away and over water."

but the 2007 article proves it wrong.

Out of curiosity, how many Tu-95's are there total in the Russian Air force?

According to Flight Global, 64 are/were operational as of 2008.

But that wasn't flying near another countries base, they flew over there own land. It was a big deal, lots of stuff and people getting fired after that.

I don't understand where they got the information that the bombers were actually armed with nuclear missiles. Sounds like sensationalist reporting to me. If you check the original source on The Washington Free Beacon, a conservative news site, they mention Obama by name like 9 times. I've no doubt the flyover happened, but cannot believe they were actually armed and there is no official confirmation of it that I can see.

My guess: they got eye on it carrying a type of missile that COULD be nuclear-tipped, and reported it as nuclear-tipped. (Sort of like how Tomahawks and Harpoons CAN be nuclear-tipped, but you don't report ALL of them as such just for that reason.

The only reference in the article to the bombers being actually armed are some unnamed "defense officials" who said they were "likely" armed with Kh-55 or Kh-55SM missiles. The official Air Force comment made no mention of this at all. IMHO, it's quite a stretch to claim they were armed with nuclear weapons as a fact and have nothing to actually support the claim.

Exactly. A friend of mine brought this article up. When I said I thought there was almost no chance of any nuclear missiles on those aircraft, he said, "how do you know, this [journalist] says there are!" To that I asked, "and where do you think he got his information from?"

I haven't seen anything on my end saying they were nuclear armed. Things like this use to happen a lot back in the cold war. It's just their "guessing" that they were.

Well, the original article says:

"The Russian Tu-95 Bear-H strategic bombers were equipped with nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and were followed by U.S. jets as they circumnavigated Guam on Feb. 12 local time—hours before President Barack Obama’s state of the union address."

Most people reading this would undoubtedly believe that Russian bombers with actual nuclear warheads were circling over Guam. That is a pretty irresponsible piece of news to put out there without anything to back it up. I just think it's a clear attempt to draw some attention to the article, which is really designed to pedal a political point, and make sure it gets picked up by the media.

That's what caught my attention in the first place. As far as I know, even during the Cold War Russian bombers were not normally flying around with nuclear warheads on board. It did happen under certain circumstances maybe, but I would be very surprised if they were doing it today. Edited by EvilBivol-1

I meant to say, I haven't heard anything not in the news, as my roommate is intel. By reading that article I would think the same thing if I was a normal person. That's the thing is that normal people have no clue on these things and believe everything they read.
