Tried finding some enemy air and got sprayed. Still made a landing even though half of my Warthog was broken lol.

I didn't see the enemy so they must have been below me riding low. Is there an easier way to find enemy air instead of searching TGP?

In MP scenario communicate with the team.

Otherwise run in the following conditions: You see trails in the sky, somebody/something is locking you and last but not least your RWR gives a missile launch.

AWACs is also an option but the mission needs to have one. Remember hills and mountains are your friends! You also can drive missiles into the ground google Dcs a10c sam avoidance there should be some videos out there that show how that works.

I mean enemy aircraft, tracking them in the air is annoying with TGP. Like finding a needle in a haystack it feels. No better way to find enemy aircraft?

Visually acquire them first. You'll hardly ever pick them up in time/BVR unless you are already arbitrarily scanning with your TGP in A2A mode. If you have an approximate bearing/altitude on the Bandit, use the DP aligned with the TGP LOS and fly the airframe in such a manner that you are 'scanning' ahead in the general area you are expecting the bandit from, all the while watching the TGP/playing about with the Wide/Narrow FOV and Zoom Increase/Decrease, depending on estimated range - the Tracking Cross will indicate that the TGP has picked up the bandit.

Once visually acquired or, if you do have a relatively good idea of range/bearing to target as above, do the following:

1 - Set the depressible pipper to 3 degrees/41 mils.

2 - Select AA on TGP and set as SOI.

3 - Scan area where I am expecting bandit from. As per the vid, you'll see from the TGP that once I picked him up in the TGP FOV (37 seconds in) I kept him there by decreasing zoom to 3Z.

4 - Once the tracking cross appears, I place the bandit in Point-Track mode (TMS Fwd Short) and dive for the deck to ensure he does not pick me up and turn me into swiss cheese.

5 - In the dive, I set the HUD as SOI and select the AIM-9's from the DSMS.

6 - Utlizing the TGP for situational awareness I climb back up onto his six. Follow the SA cue in the TGP to know exactly where the target is at all times.

7 - With HUD in AA mode, slave AIM-9 seeker to TGP LOS. You'll see that the seeker reticle is on the top of the HUD and is locked as indicated by the tone - Just follow the seeker up the HUD and fly until the bandit is in your FOV.

8 - Satisfy yourself that you're within range, launch and confirm kill.

Herewith Vid illustrating the above made a good while ago. Principles should however still be sound:

One question here Viper.

How you came for 41 mils for 3 degrees? It will be about 13.67 mils per degree, but as far as I remember it's about 17,78.

Could you explain it a bit because I'm a little confused.

I cannot recall explicitly where I read the 41mil/3 degree comparison. In any event, to clarify any possible confusion, just hit the 'depress pipper/DEPR' rocker switch 41 times (give or take 1) and you're golden :)

^^ My question exactly!

EDIT: OK, so the 41 mils (=2.3°) correspond to the angle of attack in cruise flight? Such that the TGP looks at the horizon when flying level?

Yes. Enables you to use the DP as a rudimentary 'sight' when engaging aerial targets (the 41 mils effectively aligns the depressible pipper in the HUD with the TGP AA LOS). That, together with the tracking cross, makes it relatively easy to spot and track targets BVR with the TGP.
