Is there any way to have the labels on in gameplay settings but having them toggled off by default when entering a mission? I would like to learn to play without labels but can't find any targets most of the time. By having the labels off by default i could momentarily turn them on to get a basic picture of where the enemy is. Any suggestions? (Yes i know i could just turn them off at the beginning of the mission but i already have so much to remember.)

EDIT: I was thinking of using one of my unused joystick buttons as a macro to only show labels as long as i hold the button down. But for that to work best i would need icons toggled off at the beginning of the mission.

Set them to off in the options page, and set your macro to L Shift+F10 which will let you toggle them on and off at will as you search ?

Cheers.

Thing is, if i could have it on only as i hold the button, it would be an incentive to have them off most of the time. But it doesn't look like its possible to do it the way i originally planned so i guess i'll just have to do it that way instead.

Can you map on press to "pulse" lshift+f10 ,and another on "release" to turn em off?

You should be able to pull that off with a usb controller board and use a momentary on-off switch then map Lshif+10 to it.

Love these things.. I have all four.

What i was planning to do is make a macro in Saitek Smart Technology where pushing and releasing the button both pressed shift f10 that way it would only be on while i hold the button. Problem is the labels would have to be off at the beginning of the mission or it would just be turning them off temporarily.

Make 1 button on your keyboard that turns the labels off. Then program your button on the controller like you planned to. Simply press the button to turn labels off at the beginning of the mission.

As Weta43 said: In game options, select the gameplay tab and untic Labels. Press OK and from then on every mission you start will have labels off by default. Then make your macro and... tada....:pilotfly:

But if i do that i cannot turn the labels on at all. Unticking it in gameplay options disables them permanently.

Yeah correct, sorry about that.

I used to have them on in the early LockOn era because if the difficulty to find targets but then started flying on a server where they had them turned off so i had to adapt or not fly. Since then i don't use them anymore. In FC1 the targets always showed up as black dots so once you got used to not having labels, it was still quite easy to find them. This changed in FC2 and has stayed that way since.

If you are not aware that they are there, it's difficult to find them, i have the same problem.

If you are aware, a combo of the RWR and some shifting between white hot/black hot IR can help a lot. But compared to pre FC2, they get me killed a lot though... although i don't enter any area with my 2 feet forward anymore like i used to do pre FC2.

Only option is to have labels on and then turn them off right in the beginning when you are on the ramp/runway. If you spawn right into the air over the target area... close your eyes before you hit LShift-F10...

I was getting pretty descent at spotting targets when i use to play IL2 Cliffs of Dover but what i really have trouble with are ground units.

I've decided to do as AceKng said and toggle them off at the beginning of the mission and use my macro to momentarily turn them on.

Strange, for me it's the other way round. I'm not able to spot aircraft in the P-51 or A-10C unless they are 1 mile out, and even then it's difficult. When the A2A missions began in the P-51 campaign I had to turn the labels on.

Thing is i can't really spot slow or non-moving objects. They need to be moving in order for my eyes to spot it, maybe that's why i was able to spot air targets sooner.
