benargee Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 (edited) has anyone else had experience with the landing gear being a little too weak and causing too much resistance on the grass? i came off the runway at less than 10 knots and the front wheel came off several times. also i have many times slid off the taxi way and couldn't get back on even with all wheels intact at full engine power, forcing me to restart. A-10 mostly, have had it with ka-50 breaking too Edited April 5, 2013 by benargee [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Call Sign: Pork Chop. intel I5 4670K @ 3.4GHz - GALAXY GTX 670 2GB @ 1080P - 16GB ( 2X8 ) Corsair DDR3 1600MHz - ASUS VG248QE 1080p ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VI HERO Mother Board - Samsung 840 Pro SSD 128GB(game/boot) - WD 640GB HDD 6.0GB/s - 750w Corsair Power Supply :yes:Trackir 5 w/ Tclip Pro - :joystick:TM HOTAS Warthog - Saitek Pro Rudder Pedals - Logitech G700s Mouse (edit:May19/14) http://wiki.benargee.com/
sobek Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 (edited) The A-10 wheels exert way too much pressure on the ground to be able to roll on unfortified surfaces. Look at the numerous videos of fighter jets skidding off the runway and observe what happens when they go onto dirt. St3v3f Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 (edited) You should be able to call a tow truck that brings you back onto the tarmac though :D If you get off the tarmac, these are some important points: 1. Don't stop, keep moving until you are back on solid ground 2. Be easy on the brake 3. Be easy with the steering If you keep that in mind, you can usually get away with it. Zenra Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 There are many old posts on this with lots of pictures of RW jets, including A-10's, just a bit off the runway but hopelessly broken or at least stuck as a result. Conclusion was that it's realistic. In the RW, chances are that if you drove off the runway your mission would be scrubbed anyway, even if you didn't get stuck or damaged, while the plane is towed back for ground crew to check it out. jay43 Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 Plus in reality the ground at each end of a runway is always softer exactly for this reason, its abit like the gravel trap in F1. A-10 mostly, have had it with ka-50 breaking too When we were moving our gate guard Mig-21, one wheel went into ground and it immediately sank so that the whole wheel was underground. We had to dig it out, put wooden boards under and tow it out. We managed to do it because the other two wheels were on firm surface. You need to keep in mind that you have 10-20 tons of weight on three relatively small wheels and this creates a lot of pressure.
benargee Posted April 6, 2013 Author Posted April 6, 2013 alright thanks everybody for the feedback, all your information cleared it up and now it makes sense why this happens. i guess ill just have to take it easy around the airport but on another note though, since the repair is unrealistic how it picks you up, they should also have aircraft recovery when you are within the airport zone and not dead, like a tow back to the ramp and repair. LOL. Chill M8! You never mentioned battle damage and in your OP, in fact you mentioned having full engine power to try and get back on the tarmac. A battle damaged plane rarely has that. Sure, if you you bring a shot up crate home and can walk away your a hero but that's a different story to overshooting from a bad landing or getting it out of line and running off isn't it?!
