Ghanja Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 I am planning to send my i7 860 into retirement and I am thinking about getting either i7 3770K or i5 3570K and overclock it to 4 GHz or above. I know DCS does not get any benefit from SMT but what about the difference in L3-cache? What would be the best option? Right now its either: - i7 3770K or - i5 3570K + SSD [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] .:: My System ::. .:: My Paintings ::.
DiCE81 Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 i think is better wait and buy i7 4770k or i5 4570k, in 2 months will be on sale
Rhinox Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Right now its either: - i7 3770K or - i5 3570K + SSD If you put it that way, i5+SSD is imho better option. i7 has in addition hyperthreading (useless for DCS), 8MB L3-cache (vs 6MB i5, not a big difference), and 3.9GHz turbo-boost (i5 "only" 3.8GHz, but both can be clocked to about the same frequency). Benefits of i7 are negligible, or better said, of no use for DCS. On the other hand, SSD is great thing...
SkateZilla Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Haswell is already Soft-Released. Sorin Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 The SSD will reduce the initial load time considerably but it will not improve FPS.
Ghanja Posted April 10, 2013 Author Posted April 10, 2013 The SSD will reduce the initial load time considerably but it will not improve FPS.I know that - I was just thinking that I could invest the "extra money" (that would be saved getting the i5 3570K) in something useful. Yeah it's pleasant to load Windows within 25 seconds :) and the others apps show up really quick. Ghanja Posted April 10, 2013 Author Posted April 10, 2013 Of course - the "K" (i5 3570K) means that it is unlocked and you can change the multiplier. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] .:: My System ::. .:: My Paintings ::.
joey45 Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 If it's a K version then yes.. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Erforce Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 A bit late but Imho Next crappy console : 8 low cycled cores (rumored 1.6Ghz AMD) expect "next-gen" games to be heavily multi-core optimized in x86. For DCS and actual games, ATM i5 is enough But things may change next year. you can wait for Haswell which is a 3-7% gap from Ivy (like Ivy-Sandy) or buy an Ivy now or after Haswell released. Mine is a i7 3770k with the new corsair H110 watercooling. it's quiet (not corsair stock fans), cool, and can ramp up to 4.5Ghz x8. (more x4) I do not regret my choice a second over a i5. One thing for sure, aim for "K" products. it's worth it. jctrnacty Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 No problem with 3570 here, i am on air 4,5 GHz with cheap gelid tranquillo 2.0 cooler. Most people say 3570 is better for overclocking than 3770. only difference is hypethreading , it is useful if you use a lot of video conversion or raytracing.
