The Mi-28N has a very complex front and I dont know what half of it is. What are all those sensors? Specifically, what is that dark-colored round "Rudolphs-nose" thing att the very front? That silvery thing behind it and the black ring thing above that? Is the cylindrical thing something like the Shkval on the Ka-50 (TV+Laser?)? Are those Iglas on the outboard station? Anyone know?

I'm willing to be that the "Rudolph's nose" is a sort of targeting computer or something of the likes - the Mi-24/35 has a black ball to its left that has such function at least.

Under the nose there's a FLIR, and under that as you pointed out, is an IR-TV and laser set.

The silver thing on the side of the nose seems to be a set of NAV/landing lights.

I'm clueless on the missiles though, Wiki has it that they can carry 8 Igla-Vs so you're probably right :)

PS: Apparently it can also bring a pair of R-73s on board, if a Mi-28 module is ever done, fighter/attack boys will have nasty surprises :D

The odd looking nose contains a radio antenna/dish used for sending steering commands to its radio guided ataka-V anti-tank missiles.

Thanks! I think that thing is a sort of a bagage container for when the helicopter is relocating to a new place. I believe it holds stuff for maintanance of the helicopter.

or maybe a special black box - an "everything recorder" :)

I still like the idea of ejection seats better. But is a good helicopter even without them.

Not too sure about the Mi-28 (which also looks pretty sturdy), but at least with the Mi-24, pilots rely on it very much. Although it doesn't indeed have an ejection seat, it can take-off with only one engine, the cockpit is heavily armoured all around, and generally it can take a hell of a beating and still bring you home (in fact I heard that Russian pilots often prefer the Hind to the Havoc)

Look for the Mi-24 stories from Afghanistan :)
