Wondering how a BS pilot can engage and survive against other Gunships, I tried but they always get me. They usually are two seater choppers and they can engage me a lot more easily than I can. Doesn't help that my missiles need to keep laser guidance, and my gun is short ranged and side mounted.

 

Can anyone help?

I don't understand anything in russian except Davai Davai!

Too bad AI spots you way before you can see them...

 

Just tried the "on the other side" mission in the campaign, pretty god damn hard when these MI24 show up and screw me over... And I was supposed to have jets do me some air superiority, bah.

Here's what you do: Spot them first or know where they are. Cannot help you with doing this as it comes with practice, wingman calls etc etc.

 

Once you have spotted them or know their whereabouts, descend. Get lower than them, but not too low so as to kick up a dustcloud. Just get lower so they cannot establish LOS on you before you get ready.

 

Once descended, set up your engagement: Laser on, mode select, master arm, Vikhr select etc etc. Shkval on and find the sucker.

 

Once found, track him. DO NOT lock him up yet. Keep an eye on him. You really want him to get close (7km or so) before you lock him up. Here it's a judgement call - I usually wait until a helo the size of a Mi-24 fills up the smallest target designator box of the Shkval - that usually means he's approx 7km away. Adjust size accordingly for other helos.

 

Now lock him up. He'll know he's getting ranged and he'll know it's coming from the bottom.

 

What does he do?

 

1 - He either runs

 

or

 

2 - He descends to look for you.

 

 

If he runs, chase him and shoot his a$$.

 

If he descends to look for you/get eyes-on, wait until he levels out and fire. He's so busy trying to sort himself out looking for you and getting HIS ATTACK set up that by the time he blinks he's dead, or about to be.

 

Rinse and Repeat for multiple, although if faced with two rely on your wingie or run, hide and ambush the other one.

 

This works better against Humans than A.I. as A.I. has extraordinary abilities to know exactly where you are the moment you lock him up. Even then, doing the above ensures there is little he can do.

BTW: Do you have any idea how the proximity fuse works in the vikhr missile? Is it a small radar? Or maybe a timer?

No idea, apart from the 5m detonation range the fuze affords.

Mh, I tried it out and it seems to be very hard to hit targets that move from right to left or the other way around. Surely that is always a problem but within 5km I though the vikhr could lead a bit more. :-/ Oh well, gotta wait and hope to have helos dead on in the future then. Or maybe I am missing something?

With a target perpendicular to your position travelling at 100km/h or so at a range of 5km, the Vikhr will hit. Any faster and it'll miss.

 

In any event, very rarely will you be engaging at those parameters due to the fact that, when lased, the target will usually turn to the source or run. If he carries on a perpendicular course then just intercept and shoot from a 45-degree angle or so.

You can also use your own wingmen to cover you.

159th Viper is right, if you play with line of sight, you'll win. you can follow badass for miles if you stick yourself in their back, preferably lower than them.

 

If they're making a U turn, kill them, or hit 350km/h asap. last time i tried, AI during an engagement, is pretty dumb (160km/h max) but won't let you.

You can also switch your laser off and lock him up so that the Shkval automatically tracks him. I find that this lets me get everything else prepared for the engagement.

 

The manual doesn't say how the proximity fuse works, but my money is on magnets. That's how older AIM-9 missiles did it (they rely on infrared now). Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Yeah I did that one time, but that was back in Afghanistan, surprised it worked. But it was not a hind, it was a Puma dressed up as one. And I used a bow and arrow :gun_smilie:

Have been trying this with some succes, you're right guys, the Vikhr outranges anything, and they usually die or get so badly damaged that are no longer a threat for you or your ground troops.

Now i need to learn how to properly deploy bombs and submunitions, any idea?
