Hadwell Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 (edited) the i7 2600(non-K) should be able to run a GTX680/770 without much, if any, bottleneck. for the 780/titan... in order to not have a cpu bottleneck with the 2600 u need the K model... and run in the 4.3-4.6Ghz range btw i have a i7 2600k@4.6GHz, i upgraded recently from a GTX570 2.5GB to the GTX780 3GB Edited August 30, 2013 by Hadwell My youtube channel Remember: the fun is in the fight, not the kill, so say NO! to the AIM-120. Taproot Posted August 30, 2013 Author Posted August 30, 2013 I have found a 680 second hand. Priced at 200 pounds instead of 300 pounds for the 770. So a small difference between cards but many money saved.. Money is a small issue. I just have to save a bit more.. Problem is that my power is only 500w. So i need a new one. But i might have another 450w around. If i use that one to only supply the new gpu, could that work? Another factor is that if i buy the 680 i can easily afford a second hand i7 2600k or 2700k... xxJohnxx Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 I would definatelly not suggest to use two PSUs with one system. If you know what you are doing, and you got the right hardware you can do it, but not if you just have them laying arround and try that, just to save some money. Never ever go cheap on the PSU, that will get expensive pretty fast. Check out my YouTube: xxJohnxx Intel i7 6800k watercooled | ASUS Rampage V Edition 10 | 32 GB RAM | Asus GTX1080 watercooled
Esac_mirmidon Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 (edited) My MSI GTX 770 Lightning arrived today. Installed and running smooth and silent. Very cold card. ( a little expensive but it´s very very quite and silent) This were my graphics settings With this settings and my rig specifications ( GTX 560 2500K OC 4.6 2g RAM DDR3 1600) Test missions (Fast stock missions). Su-27 Intercept: BEFORE 45 FPS in cockpit average, sometimes up to 48, sometimes 40. Cockpit lights on, drop to 32-35 FPS AFTER SOLID 60 FPS no matter front-side-cockpit view, ALWAYS ( Vsync on). Cockpit Lights On SOLID 60 FPS again, no drop at all with lights on. Su-25 Fast mission: BEFORE 37-42 FPS. Sometimes when firing rockets, flying through smoke 32 FPS. AFTER SOLID 60 FPS no matter if i´m flying or firing. Only in one moment firing a long rockets burst and flying through the smoke my FPS drops to 58 XDDD ¡¡¡. UH-1H fast mission: BEFORE Take Off position on runway, Passenger Yak in my FOV: 27-35 FPS. When i´d taked off FPS 40-45 flying low. AFTER, the same take off position SOLID 60 FPS, no drop at all. On air the same 60 FPS, no drop at all in any circunstance. CLOUD COVER: BEFORE on runway, below cloud cover and Su-27/Su-25/UH-1H/Ka-50 ( 3D cockpits), from 40-48 FPS. Over cloud cover 48-53 FPS, crossing cloud layer drops to 35-43 FPS. AFTER 60 SOLID FPS below cloud cover, over cloud cover and crossing clouds. So i´m very very happy. ( another example, i´ve doubled my FPS in ARMA3 ,from 35 FPS to 60 FPS with the same graphic settings and almost doble view distance than before. Also temp came down a lot. From 76º-80º degrees with my 560 before when playing DCS or ARMA3, now i have barely 60º at maximum peaks, and 27º at iddle. I was considering also the GTX 780 but the higher price and the relative difference between make me buy the 770, saving more than 100 euros, and with a little OC to the 770 when needed ( if one day i need such OC ), the gap between 770 and 780 could be filled more or less. xxJohnxx Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 I could finally build in my 780 into my case today: So far I haven't did much testing. The only thing that I did test was the Instant Action - Huey Free Flight. Priviously, I got about 5-15 frames while standing on the runway. Now it went up to 55! :) Maybe some more tweaking in NVIDA inspector, and I should be able to improve results even further. 1 Check out my YouTube: xxJohnxx Intel i7 6800k watercooled | ASUS Rampage V Edition 10 | 32 GB RAM | Asus GTX1080 watercooled

Hunden Ynk Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 My MSI GTX 770 Lightning arrived today... Thanks a lot! That's really a big improvement. Great to see some numbers to back it up also. Soo, where's that piggy-bank, and here's the hammer...

cichlidfan Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Nice to know. Taproot Posted September 1, 2013 Author Posted September 1, 2013 Right. Rep has been tossed out and the moneyfairy came to visit, so all the sudden I had money for this and that.. I got hold of a 3 months old i5 3570k, replacing my i7 2600. Hopefully I will get those money back when I sell the i7. I had to get a new PSU and ended up with the Corsair Enthusiast Series TX650 V2. Hopefully it will be of a good quality. For the GPU it took me 72 hours with googling, rechecking and bla bla bla before I finally landed on Gigabyte Geforce GTX 770 Whats my plan now? Well. When I get all the stuff I will wramp up all the settings in DCS and start testing. First: My system as it is now. Second: System with the new GPU Third: System with new GPU and new CPU at stock speed Fourth: System with new GPU and new CPU overclocked (if possible) 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Esac_mirmidon Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 I was about to buy the same 770 than you but finally i´ve decided for the MSI Lightning because it´s OC yet, and it´s very silent and cold. But your card was among my three finalist. " You must think in russian.." Ramjet Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 i went from a 580 to a sc 780 and the improvement was quite noticeable in DCS. @2560x1600 on a single monitor, I'm playing all maxed settings (except civ traffic on low) and I get a lot of 60fps. I'd say 40-60 is the general range. Arma on the other hand, I got next to nothing due to the game's engine problems. So, ED is doing something right.

Ramjet Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 spoke too soon. was in a campaign mission with more ai, and just encountered gpu usage drops from the game which craps my fps... it is more robust than arma, but that was infinitely frustrating. I see this game has the same problem of not being able to utilize modern hardware due to lack of good multi-threading support.
Taproot Posted September 1, 2013 Author Posted September 1, 2013 So what you are saying is that you wasted a lot of money? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
cichlidfan Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 I see this game has the same problem of not being able to utilize modern hardware due to lack of good multi-threading support. Most of here know that. The game runs everything but sound on one core. Ramjet Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 So what you are saying is that you wasted a lot of money? Quite an assumption. What makes you think I bought this card specifically for this game? Or, any game for that matter. I was at my 2 year upgrade point for my GPU. Some of us have jobs with specific hardware needs. Gaming is a secondary consideration of hardware upgrades. Most of here know that. The game runs everything but sound on one core. Yes. I was aware of that fact. Just haven't run into gpu usage being bottlenecked as a reuslt (in this game) yet... Admittedly, I am just getting back into it as I never found it very enjoyable in the past due to persistent stutter (which moving the game from a raid 0, back to a regular drive seemed to help a lot with... oddly).
Taproot Posted September 2, 2013 Author Posted September 2, 2013 Glad to hear that new gpu was not a waste. :-) Will most likely be a waste for me if i dont see an improvement. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Ramjet Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 From what I can see, there is definitely going to be an improvement in non-bottlenecking areas of the game. But, areas where the game can't keep up, will still be trouble areas. Fortunately, I haven't noticed those areas that much with this game yet) (p.s... sorry. For some reason I thought you were a random person coming in the thread, which made me read your previous post with different intent) :)
