PeterP Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 (edited) We've demo'ed the Huey to quite a few actual helicopter pilots and most of them are really impressed to see the ETL transition vibration effects. That doesn't mean it's absolutely realistic (I personally feel the vibrations are overdone also), but that seeing and hearing the effects, even if more severe than in reality, provides the correct cues to the pilot about what the helicopter is doing, apparently more so than they get in other helicopter sims. I would say, just my opinion, that it is one of those situations where the PC sim needs to amplify the visual/audio feedback in order to compensate for the lack of physical feedback. However we are not beyond adjusting the vibration if there is enough reason for it. Again though, most pilots I've seen fly the sim live specifically liked the ETL feedback. With that said, I'm a little confused about the idea that the vibrations themselves somehow affect control. I will check with the team, but I am fairly certain that the vibration effects are purely visual and audible and have no mathematical effect on the model. The control effects you are seeing are simply the FM as it transitions through ETL. In other words, if we disable the vibration effects as a cockpit animation argument, the FM will behave exactly the same as it does with the vibrations enabled. Now a different question is whether the ETL transition is accurate in the FM and this is still subject to tuning, so if you have something useful to contribute as data or resource, please do so. Whoever thinks too that the visual feedback of the shaking Main-panel is still a little exaggerated in Beta 1.2.6.18651 can make following edit to the ..\DCS World\Mods\aircrafts\Uh-1H\Cockpit\Scripts\mainpanel_init.lua with Notepad++. This edit Reduces the shaking of the main-panel by 50% while the shaking of the fuselage and FM is untouched: You can try different values between 0.0-1.0 . 50% of the default just looks/feels plausible to me (and I don't fear any more that the main-panel will suddenly break off). The shaking of the fuselage and the sound (and my butt-kicker) is more then enough for me to get a reasonable feedback what's happening. Edited October 8, 2013 by PeterP 1
Stacker Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 Thanks for sharing this - it's really transformed the sim for me (and the guys I fly online with). If this really is just a visual thing (and doesn't affect the FM), then I think BST should promote it to a setting on the options screen and let people tweak their shakes accordingly. i7-4790K@4.7GHz : EVGA 1070 SC : 16GB Corsair Vengence Pro : 2xEVO 840 SSD : EVGA 850W PSU : CORSAIR H100i Cooler : ASUS Z97-AR MB : CORSAIR OBSIDIAN 750D FULL TOWER
VanjaB Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 I actually love the shaking, its a great visual clue and very helpful even if at times it feels a little extreme.
jay43 Posted October 13, 2013 Posted October 13, 2013 Nice find PeterP i have been using your mod for this since you posted it up and using the same numbers as you i find it to be much more realistic now. You don't need all that console shaking you get enough feed back from the airframe shaking the console is to aggressive and very off putting. When i watch a replay of my landing now from in cockpit and compare it to a real life video its almost a perfect match. Eagles may soar high but weasel's don't get sucked into jet engines. Griffin Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Spot on Samri! Thanks PeterP! You made another module playable for me. Amazing how much such visual effect can affect my pilotage. Now I really enjoy the jiggle! Your settings are perfect.

howie87 Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 I agree this should probably be reduced slightly by default to a more realistic level. Hopefully in the next patch...
scrtagnt69 Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 More bumps please. I actually love the shaking, its a great visual clue and very helpful even if at times it feels a little extreme. Throw in a couple of LSHFT K and I'm in heaven...In RL the Huey is the 3rd bumpiest ride around..The CH-47 has the highest measurement of vibration during take off with the AH-1 coming in second. A vibration study the US Army made in 81 shows the Huey has extreme levels of vibration during take off that affect instrument panels and crew. http://www.usaarl.army.mil/TechReports/81-5.PDF If we are hoping for the most accurate sim of the UH-1 then it should actually have more vibrations during all aspects of operation ..start up ,hover, take off, cruise, landing.
Fifi Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 I like the shaking too, and believe it's close to real. The only flight i had in a chopper for RL was so incredibly noisy and shaky! It wasn't in a Huey though (unfortunatly) but was in a Hugues 500 series if i recall well. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
